I went to a presentation on Thurs with no previous knowledge of DVC and its workings. I may purchase as the incentives offered for AKV are pretty good, including $8/ point which can apply towards downpayment...so effectively $96/point. This as well as the equivalent # of points I purchase received immediately..but usable only at Saratoga Springs Resort or Disneyland hotel. Thru this forum, it appears I can rent these for around $9/ point...so now effectively $87/point. And 2 free premium annual passes for Disneyland now or Disneyworld to be activated within 3 years.

I got a name referred to me from this forum, but my guide says it has to be a legit referral AND she would not honor it. So if I could actually have someone in my local area, especially someone I could talk to on the phone, I might be able to get the $500 referral incentive...and I think the person referring gets something too but I'm not sure of that. It ends today...so I need help ASAP. If I purchase 170 point with the additional $500 incentive, it makes the effective price $84/ point.

Very interesting -- I believe this is the first we've heard of someone being denied a referral in such a manner. Perhaps you should request a new guide.

I would challenge this as well. Better yet, call their bluff and say without being able to use a referral, you will pass on the purchase. I think they'll change their mind...

I would challenge that, I had been on the tour last Feb and had several discussions with my guide before I gave them a name for the referral incentive. I used Ed T as our referral and we dont live anywhere near each other. I had no trouble getting the gift card, no questions were asked.

heard they were limiting the number of referrals people could give. Have never given one to anyone but if someone needs one I would be glad to help welcome you home to DVC as have been in since 1993

I hadn't even used a name for the referral, though got one from the forums emailed to me, but it wasn't local.

So what I need is a reasonably local person soon who I can at least tell my guide I spoke with and convinced me to buy now. I think that is what it will take. And my guide doesn't work today, but left her cell phone #.

Like the other posters, I would definitely challenge the guide on the referral issue. I've read through various state requirements for referrals in materials sent to me by DVC, and haven't seen anything like what you have described as a requirement for CA. People know people from all over the country - it sounds like something this particular guide has just made up on their own.
