Need a recommendation for a good diaper rash ointment

Well, my son has avoided getting diaper rash for 3 1/2 months, but he is now starting to get some. I remember reading/hearing a while back that there are certain ones that are highly recommended, and some that are not that great. I guess I didn't pay attention, because I can't remember what was said!

I think one name that does stand out in my mind as having had a lot of praise is "Butt Paste". I know, gross name. I've seen it at Target, but I wanted to get everyone's recommendations first for which brands they really like!

DS13 got diaper rash easily. What worked the best for him was plain old Vaseline and Corn Starch. I would smear on the Vaseline and then sprinkle with the corn starch (I bought one of those really big salt shaker things).

I second this... I used this myself.I had on DS that was very prone to diaper rash

A&D Ointment is a good one. Never heard of Butt Paste, but if you powder, don't use one with talc, use cornstarch, much better for the kidlets.

I use the butt paste and that is what a lot of DISer's recommended to me when I was PG with DS.

We use Dyprotex. You can get it at Walgreens. We think it is the best stuff for diaper rashes...and I have seen many a diaper rash!!

Are you certain it isn't yeast based? My niece used to have problems with that.

We used a water-based non-petroleum gel, mixed with maalox. Worked well for us.

Best just to look for any ointment that has a high % of Zinc Oxide.

For us, the CVS brand Pediatric Ointment for diaper rash worked the best...It has 40% zinc oxide - most brands out there only have 10%....Butt Paste has 16%.

DD developed a bad rash in the ICN and the Dr. prescribed some sort of ointment that worked wonders. I wish I could think of the name of it. I think you can ask the pharmacist to make some up for you. We brought that stuff home with us and used every bit of it. Then we switched to Desitin.

we LOVE Dr. Smith's ... I finally found it at Wal-Green's. It is kind of $$$ but worth it! DS didn't have any diaper rash until a few months ago and it clears it right up!

I used plain corn startch after I gave him a bath with cornstartch in it. Talk about a silky bottom.

We use Lotrimin for yeast(little tiny bumps and raw angry skin) and an adult cream called Carlesta on irritative rashes(flat like sunburn). It is zinc oxide and dimethicone(similar to maalox), it doesn't smell like fish oil and it clears him up in hours. My DS has been in diapers for 10 yrs so I've become somewhat of an expert on diaper rash

TRIPLE PASTE. My extremely fair twin son gets nasty diaper rash and this stuff is magical. Butt Paste is good, but Triple Paste rocks. I buy it at Walgreens.

DS used to get it really bad and the only thing that would work was called "Dyprotex". It came already loaded onto little sponge applicators.

I always used A&D (doesn't smell so good, but really clears up a rash) or Burt's Bees (this stuff smells SO good!) on my children. I do remember reading not to use powders or cornstarch. I just Googled it, and according to the American Academy of Family Physicians:

"Talcum powder and cornstarch aren't recommended. Talcum powder can get in your baby's lungs. Cornstarch may make a yeast infection worse."

I have heard wonderful things about Butt Paste. Balmex works fine for garden variety rash. Yeast rashes require something like Lotrimin to kill the yeast, then a top coat of A&D to seal it in.

I love Butt Paste. It clears up Ireland in hours! We get it at Krogers, Walgreens and Walmart.
