I'm in need of a basic camera that is point and shoot. 95% of the time I'll be using the "auto" mode. Sometimes I try to play around with the settings but it's seldom. I'd like a good zoom feature. Looking to spend around $300. Less would be great but I'm willing to spend a little more if necessary. Really I know absolutely nothing about cameras. Typically I just use my phone.

Really appreciate any recommendations and suggestions. I just don't have a lot of time right now to do a whole lot of research on this.

What type of phone do you have? What are you hoping to get out of a p&s camera that you're not getting out of your phone?

Samsung galaxy 5. Well that's a good question. Better pictures, maybe? I sometimes have issues with pics being blurry, probably user error. In general will my phone take as good pics as a point and click? I do have issues with the zoom on my phone. They just don't usually turn out well.

I have a Galaxy S5. Every point and shoot I have had since 2003 took better photos.

The Panasonic LX 7 is running $277.99 at Bandhphoto right now.
This is our backup to our DSLR.
It's nice in low-light.
Photos are nice and sharp. Highly recommend.

The image quality of most sub-$300 P&S cameras will be very similar to the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S5 will have more features, like HDR, like being able to instantly upload photos for sharing, etc. While P&S cameras will give you the advantage of a true zoom. Your camera doesn't really zoom at all, it just crops the images.
So if you're after much improved zoom, a camera like the Canon SX series can give you quality similar to your phone, but with far far more zoom range.

Close to the $300 mark, you can get some of the older enthusiast level cameras that do indeed take 1 or 2 steps up over your phone for image quality. The Panasonic LX 7 mentioned above, for example. The Canon S110 is around that ballpark. The original Sony RX100 is only a little above that ballpark, but it is massive steps better than a camera phone. Though each of these enthusiast cameras have a pretty limited zoom range -- more than your phone, but less than cheaper camers with inferior image quality.

Thank you. I will have to check each of these out!!

I'm a photography novice and bought a Canon Powershot sx400is a few months ago. It's a pretty basic point and shoot with several really cool functions. Takes great photos and has an amazing zoom. I really love this camera. I paid right around $133 on Amazon.

I've seen some crazy specials lately. For a little more $ you can get an entry level DSLR or mirrorless ILC with kit-lens.

I think I saw Canon selling their entry level Rebel + kit for around $300 and I saw Sony A5000 with kit for $350.

Keep it on Auto and if some day you want more you can explore.

Panasonic dcm-zs50. 4.4 x 2.5 x 1.4" dimension, Ultra small, Leica lens, 24-720 zoom $297.00. If you do not live in state of New York there is no tax and shipping is free. B&H is reputable. I buy my stuff from them. This is a new model.

I went with this one. f2.8 throughout the zoom range. It is splash and dust proof. You can take pictures in the rain. However it may be more than you want to pay.
