My husband and I are "Pooh Sized" people and we need a new mattress. We have had our current mattress for about 8 years now. Every morning I wake up with back pain and many parts of my body go numb during the night. Please help... what type of mattress do you have?

looking forward to hearing suggestions. We are also "pooh" size. Our king is 12yrs old. I know we need a new mattress but I have no idea what to look at. And I hate mattress shopping as much as car shopping.

we bought one last year and it holds up well. I don't remember the brand but each coil is wrapped by itself so less movement and it is extremely comtable

I saw some simmons beautyrest like that. I tried it out but it was a bit too firm for me

I am tiny and dh is huge 350+ so finding a matress we both like was hard. We ended up getting a sleep number bed 3 mos ago and we both love it. We can each have the firmness we need without one being uncomfortable. They had 2 yr interest free finanacing if you got their credit card, so we did that & pay it off each month.

Well, our expensive mattress really is the pits (literally), so I would NOT recommend a Serta Sleep-Aire. I wish I'd had done my research before buying this one. The first 6 months were like sleeping on a cloud -- so comfortable. Now we have peaks and valleys, and back pain! $1300 down the drain.

From the research I've done and the mattresses I've laid on (including the sleep number), here are my conclusions to help you with your search:

#1 -- DO NOT get a pillow-top mattress. They feel good for a few months, but the material breaks down on the pillow top and they don't last. You can't flip them, either.

#2 -- Unless you and your DH have different mattress preferences as far as softness and firmness go, you do not need to blow a bunch of money on a sleep number mattress. They are great for that purpose (different mattress feel), but if that's not an issue, save your money.

#3 -- Tempurpedic is good, but people complain they sleep hot in the summer.

#3 -- Go with a good quality inner spring coil mattress without a pillow top, but possibly with a latex topper that you purchase separately. At least the topper can be replaced in a few years, unlike a pillow mattress, and if it gets too hot in the summer, you can take it off. The latex is supposed to be better though to help with the heat issue.

Here's a link to a good mattress forum that might help you out:

I second the sleep number recommendation. I also woke up frequently with back pain, but since we've gotten our bed I'm much better.

We got a Tempurpedic about 2 years ago and love it! DH has a bad back and he says it has made a world of difference. We got the one with the adjustable frame and the massage/vibrator feature for home, and although it's really nice when it's needed, we don't use it that much. We're now considering getting just a "regular" Tempurpedic set for the cabin too. And now he can't tell when I get up in the middle of the night and go on the Disboards because it is totally motionless! lol :lmao:

We LOVE our TempurPedic, it was worth the $. My neck and shoulders were so sore in the am and now it's gone. We had the Sleep Number for 6 years and I hated it. You also feel no movement with the TempurPedic and that's great if you're a light sleeper. My 70 lb labs can jump on it and I don't even feel them.

Not pooh sized but we have a pillow top from Original Mattress Factory and LOVE it.

Original Mattress Factory mattresses are just about the only ones left in the market that ARE flippable. I figure if the pillow top ever does wear out, I can just add a foam topper to it down the road.

They were really easy to work with, no pressure sales at all. Every mattress in our house is now by them.

I got a Sterns and Foster 10 years ago and it feels like its brand new. I LOVE it and will never buy another brand. Well...never say never, but it would have to be downright amazing to beat this one. Before this I had every kind of mattress you could think of. This one is not sagging in the middle, is soft yet firm so it doesnt hurt our backs, it IS a pillowtop and again it looks like it was just delivered. I have never had so many of my friends sit on my bed, only to lay down on it and then not want to get up and they ask me what IS this mattress, its the best thing I have ever been on.
They are a little more but considering I was paying for a new mattress every 5 years... it has more than saved me my money.

We have a pillow top that is flippable too. It has pillow top on both sides of the mattress. I think it is a Simmons Beauty Rest. We flip it every 2 years or so.

We've had ours for over ten years, and it's getting worn, so about 18 months ago, we added a memory-foam topper. Boy has that made a difference. We both suffer from chronic back pain (mine upper and his lower) so this has seemed to ease that.

The Original Mattress Factory told us to flip it/rotate it every 3 months! They even set us up on a reminder email to help us remember. It's a pain in the rear but hoping it makes it last a long time.

Wow - no wonder ours didn't stay as comfortable as it should have for longer.

I prefer a latex matress since there are no coils to put pressure on your body. Latex is also a 10-20 year mattress VS a regular mattress that lasts 5-10 years. I also bought mine from a mattress factory where they make them right there and also make them for the major mattress companies.

See what feels good to you.

We have an Intelligel which we LOVE! We've had it for four years and it's just like new.

I didn't want it, Mr. JJ did but it fixed all these problems I didn't know my mattress was causing. I had a painful shoulder for years. I thought it was from carrying babies, purses, etc. Nope. It was from my old mattress. A month after we got that bed, no more shoulder or hip pain. And none since.

We've had the Temperpedic and hated it. It's soooo hot. It insulates your body heat and is miserable if it's above 60 degrees in the house. Everyone I know who has had one (except the people on this board - but I don't really "know" them) have hated theirs too.

I'd go check out the Intelligel. It has a 15 year warranty. You can try it risk free for 90 days. There was no way they were getting their bed back after 90 days with us though.

And Mr. JJ's back problems - the reason we got the bed - are gone too.

Love, love, love this mattress. Can't recommend it enough!

We have a tempurpedic and love it. No more back pain for me and I can stay in bed for more than six hours at a time.

I do not find it too hot at any time.

I have had a pillowtop for several years and love it - every person is different. I recently had to get a 2nd mattress and Sleepy's has this nifty machine where you lay down and it analyzes the best matttress for you. It recommended a plush which I was doubtful about it, but I have been sleeping on it for 2 weeks and love it. So you might check out Sleepys as part of the research process.

We got a Stearns and Foster last summer, on a recommendation from a friend, and love it! I was also advised to avoid Pillowtops because the "topper" can get smushed in easily, making the mattress uncomfortable. If you want a cushy top, a separate topper is a good option (e.g. Memory foam or a featherbed). We were planning to get a memory foam topper, but the (firm) mattress is so comfortable, we don't need one.

Also, if cost is a concern, don't be afraid to look at the floor samples. Most stores will sanitize these for you, and many of them aren't on the floor long (we got one that they stated had been on the floor only a few days). This cost us less than half of the sale price for a similar mattress.

I 2nd the suggestion on a mattress from the original mattress factory. We bought our about 5 years ago and absolutely love it! best mattress I have ever slept on.
