Over labor day when we were visiting family ( on our drive back from WDW) my dd9 was jumping on their trampoline and hurt her ankle. She was put on crutches and wrapped it, and the swelling and brusing was getting worse, so we took her back to the dr a week after her appt. She just had an MRI yesterday, and they called today - she completely tore 3 ligaments. :( I feel so bad!!! It wasn't the news I thought I was going to hear at all. And I've been letting her walk around because she said she felt better.:sad1: I feel like a bad mom. I thought it was just a sprain, like the dr first said.

I am so sorry! But don't beat yourself up - how could you possibly have known?

You could not have possibly known it was worse. Don't beat yourself up over that.

I do agree, however, with the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has the suggestion: (from their website)

Trampoline Safety

A MINUTE FOR KIDS: About 83,000 people have been injured on trampolines and it is not advised that children play on trampolines. The only time trampolines should be used is for training programs or certain sports, and then only under the supervision of a trained adult.

I am glad you daughter wasn't hurt worse, and I would urge folks to not use trampolines for children.

It is completely not your fault. You could not have known how serious her injury was. Don't beat yourself up. Also, most parents don't have any idea how dangerous trampolines are, so don't beat yourself up about that either. I had no idea until I was involved in a trampoline case with my job and did some research on lawsuits and injuries. I'm with the previous poster on trampolines. The most severe injuries I found had nothing to do with falling off. You can come down on it wrong and have all kinds of injuries including breaking your neck and being in a wheelchair the rest of your life (that's usually from trying to do a flip and landing on the mat on your head). You don't even have to be doing anything wild to get horribly hurt. In our case, the kid was just jumping straight up and down, but another kid was on the tramp at the same time also jumping straight up and down. That is a major danger as if more than one person is on a tramp the tension of the mat will be wrong when people come down. If the mat is taut when you hit it, you can do serious damage. The kid in our case broke his leg at the growth plate and his legs will likely never be the same length. I would not have thought twice about letting my daughter get on a trampoline before that case. We won't ever have a trampoline and I really hope my daughter is never on one (although I know she probably will be at some point as a kid, but if I ever see her on a tramp with more than just her on it I can't even tell you how much trouble she will be in). I hope your DD gets better soon.

OOH! I'm sorry! Your poor daughter!!! I hope she heals quickly. And don't beat yourself up over this! From what you said, the doctor didn't think it was that bad at firs either!

I have heard of too many trampoline accidents, so my kids are never allowed on them. As the previous posters have said, most accidents involve kids who are just jumping and land wrong.

your poor daughter. that really sucks. at least you know what it is now though.

i sprained my ankled (tripped off the curb) and after countless x-rays, 2 mri's and a shock/nerve test i finally have answers as to why it still hurt 6 years later. nerve damage caused by the sprain. it's been 2 years and i'm on medicine for it, works wonders! and it still swells up during weather changes.

It is not your fault, or anyones .Torn ligaments are not easy to diagnose without an MRI or CT scan.I hate trampolines. I see so many kids in our ER at the hospital with injuries all the time. Some minor, some MAJOR and life affecting. Everytime my DD asks for one I stay firm with a "no"

Don't feel bad. My son had a broken ankle for three months before I took him to the Dr. Then it took them three more months of casts and boots to decide they weren't working and he needed surgery. Then, the terrible mother that I am, I scheduled it for a few days before Christmas because of my work schedule.

I am sorry for your dd....But I kind of hope some of the parents from those trampoline threads read this. I would never get one. People think they're safe if they have the net around it so they don't fall but most of the concern for safety is ankle strain because of the huge amount of pressure that comes back up at the child as they go down.

I HATE trampolines....
