I'd like to get a gift for a coworker that is being laid off. I'm thinking of a memento, not a gift certificate or food--something to show her how much I appreciated working with her and will miss her. Any suggestions?

Not sure what your budget is but perhaps you can find a nice piece of jewelry on etsy.com. A nice pen set is also a good choice.

I perused Etsy and it reminded me that she is a gardener. How about some kind of pretty garden accessory? I don't know much about that kind of thing--birdbath or feeder, windchimes? What do you think?

I like the wind chime idea! It is kind of metaphoric when you think about changing winds and being laid off.

A wind chime sounds like a good idea. I would also recommend a nice card with a heartfelt message about how much you've enjoyed working with her and your hopes for her future, if you were that close. You might even think about extending an invitation to her for a lunch out so you guys can 'catch' up after a couple of weeks or a month. She might enjoy a lunch out with an old friend.
