Need a cool back-to-school cake

I always make a cake on the first day of school, to "surprise" DS when he gets off the bus. (Obviously, it's no longer a surprise, but more of a tradition.)

Anyway, I've done a basic candy-covered, the pencil from Family Fun magazine, a catterpillar of cupcakes (I have those little silicon cups with feet), and last year a chalkboard:

I need something new for this year. Any creative ideas?

what about a school bus? You could make it out of cupcakes too!

That chalkboard is really cute.

How about:
- Time to hit the books (cake would look like a book)
- Computer cake
- Homework (looks like a piece of paper with math problems?)

What a fun tradition!

Maybe a cake with the new school name on it. When I was in 4th grade you got to move upstairs so a cake with stairs on it would have been cool (for example).

I went off this idea. It's turns out the thing he's most looking forward to about the new building is the cafeteria. - The older kids in the neighborhood clued him in to the fact that you can choose pizza every day if you want. (How to impress a 9-year-old boy in 10 easy lessons, right!)

Anyway, here it is -

He gets home in about 2 hours.
