Neck fans

So I ordered one today for our September trip. Because yesterday I read a thread on here that someone would:
Melt Melt Melt Melt if they went in the September heat 😱

And look - tonight a neck fan thread.
It’s like the disboard knows what you do on your computer. 😜

We went to Vegas in May for an all day festival and we bought some since it was going to be over 100. I found that it worked best when I but a cooling towel over my neck and then but the fan on top of it. We found some bartenders that would let us dunk our cooling towels into their ice buckets every hour or so and that helped alot. The air was nice and cool and really helped. Not sure I would use it at a theme park or not since it is kind of uncomfortable to have on for multiple hours.

Just ordered a couple as I will be at a place where I can dunk the cooling towel. We are starting our hottest heat wave of the season. :sunny: :crazy2:

I found that cooling towels work a lot better in dry heat versus humid heat. We were in Mexico and it was 95 degrees with 90% humidity and the cooling towel didn’t work. Heck, I even doused myself in water and there’s no evaporative cooling whatsoever. I did see some folks with neck fans but I am not sure how well those work with high humidity.

FYI, Walmart often puts their cooling towels on clearance at this time of year, and you can also frequently find them discounted at Marshall's and/or Ross stores, too.

I have both the soft "perforated" type that is the same as the ones sold in the parks (without the Disney theming), and also the faux-chamois type that is sort of rubbery when wet, and holds more liquid. The thing about the chamois one is that it is about 36" x 12", so I can wrap it fully around my neck like a scarf if I need to, or even around my ribs under my shirt.

If you combine a fan with cool water applied to the skin, quite well. The air flow of the fan will cause evaporation in spite of the humidity.

Uh oh. It gets really humid here. A couple weeks ago, I just got a cup of ice and rubbed an ice cube around my neck, forehead, top of head and insides of wrists every 15 minutes or so to keep cool. I was hoping to find a bit drier technique as, of course, the ice melted down my back & front and hair. Since there was no evaporative cooling. I felt like a drenched puppy after the third ice cube. 🥴

I had sweat so much it looked like I had just climbed out of the pool.

The cooling towel did absolutely nothing for me yesterday that an old T-shirt cut into a long scarf strip could have done with the same effect. I'm not exaggerating, as, by the end of the day, my cotton T-shirt was as damp as the towel and felt EXACTLY the same.

First of all, I didn't think it worked much. I dampened, snapped or shook like the directions said. Neither made much of a difference. When I squeezed out almost all of the water, it got warmer faster. :headache: When I left in some water, the cooling lasted 20 minutes AND I ended up with a drenched T-shirt by the end of the day.

Weather yesterday here was 95 degrees. We were on asphalt the majority of the day. So the heat radiating from the asphalt brought it up to well over 100+ degrees. Humidity was 45%.

The only time the cooling towel was cool was when a fan or air conditioning was on it making it & me cool. Otherwise it really felt like the damp T-shirt I had on that also cooled and heated against my body in the same conditions.

The cooling towel I got was from Target.

I think I'm just going to put a half cup of ice cubes from concessions stands into a Ziplock baggie and just fold that inside the DRY cooling towel to hold in place behind my neck. The ice cubes will last the same 20 minutes and I'll be dry. If I put the rest of the ice cubes in a tall insulated travel cup, I won't be constantly at a concessions stand getting more ice.

If that works, I may try one of these gel neck coolers. Anyone try one of these? The reviews for this one are good.

Just curious do these fans set the metal detectors off at security? Do you leave them in your bag or hold them as you walk through?

My daughter bought one from Temu also & likes it. Enough that she is planning to buy more for out Sept Disney trip. Not sure if I want one but will try it if purchased for me, lol.
I also bought one from Temu. It works fine for me and it was only $11 so I wouldn't feel too bad if it didn't work.
