Nebulizer's and Meds that need to be cold.....

I had surgery two months ago and am having some issues. I just found out last night I will need to take a nebulizer with me and one of the medicines i will be taking need to stay cold.

I am going to call Disney and find out what i can do. We booked a value so that kind of screws me up because they dont have mini re fridges.


Ill also need to take this stuff on the plane.... is there anything special i need to know?

For the resort, when you call let them know that you have a medical need for the mini-fridge. This will let them know to have the fridge available when you arrive.

As for carrying it on a plane, I am not sure about that.

I would suggest going to www.coolerconcept.com and looking at the Frio Cold Packs. There are several people in this forum, myself included, who use them.

These are gel packs that are water activated. They will keep the internal temperature at insulin-safe levels for over 40 hours. As the water evaporates you can just soak it in water for a few minutes to reactivate it. They come in various sizes.

For example, I have a "double wallet". Depending on what I am doing it will hold my Byetta pen as well as either a syringe with insulin in it or two insulin vials. And I tend to do at least five air round trips a year and have never had any problems with TSA over it.

Awesome Ill check them out but its not insulin. Im not 100% sure what is it. The DR just called me yesterday and they overnighted the meds. I am not home yet so I do not even know what i am in for yet

I got a fridge from both Pop and the All-Star Music for my DD's formula - medically necessary since she was tube fed. My SIL got a fridge because she wanted to for $10/day. They do have fridges... Call and put the request on your room and then remind them at check-in.

As for TSA, I thought gel packs weren't allowed (unless something has changed since it's been a while since we did it). I don't know anything about water activated gel packs. We would take a small lunchbox type cooler ($5 at Walmart) and ziplock bags for ice. We would dump the ice out before going through TSA since ice wasn't allowed. Then as we got on the plane we would ask the flight attendent for ice in the bags. I never had any problem getting more ice. You can also get ice pretty much anywhere in the parks - any quick service or the first aid station.

Does anyone know of a product that will keep bottled medicines cold? I will be taking two in bottles sized 100mL to 300mL. I can use the freezer packs in a soft sided cooler, but wonder if there is something better.

Just remind the Front Desk Host/Hostess at check in, and check your bill before you leave to make sure you were not accidentally charged. If you are it can easily be fixed so don't panic if it happens.

Also if you get to the resort and your room is not ready, the luggage department has a a place where they can store it a the right temperature.

Frozen items are allowed as long as they are frozen solid, not slushy.

The water activated cooler things are not a problem. A lot of people still do what you did with ice.

Whether or not this is cool enough would depend on the medication. Some need to be held at refrigerator temperature and some just cool room temperature.
One thing to be aware of when using ice is that it is possible to freeze medication when storing it on ice.

I take a nebulizer and three medicines for the nebulizer with me when I travel, one of the meds (an asthma medicine) needs to stay refrigerated. To transport it, since we drive, I put the medicine (which is individually wrapped) into a gallon size freezer bag, then I put it on a tray and then I lay the tray in an ice chest for the duration of the our drive.

This method keeps the medicine cold enough without allowing it to freeze.

In the hotel room, I take the meds (still in the gallon size freezer bag) and put it into the refrigerator but the resort refrigerators don't usually get super cold so I have to keep it on the coldest setting and keep a check on it to make sure it's okay.

I've been doing this for the past several years and have been fine, lucky I don't have to take the medicine with me to the parks, I just have to go back to the resort when/if I need to take it at an off hour.

Flying with your medication shouldn't be a problem, but there may be some specific things you need to let the airline know about in advance, I'm not totally sure on those procedures.

I fly with 3 different refrigerated meds. There will be no problems taking them on. Your regular freezer packs are fine, and screeners prefer them to ice cubes in a ziploc, plus less messy.
Most meds don't have to be ice cold-just not warm. Many have info with them stating room temperature is ok for 6 hours, or 12 hours...etc. Ask your doc or pharmacist.
If you are concerned about TSA, bring a letter from your doctor stating what meds you're on. I've flown about 30 times with my meds and the only time I ever had to take out and show my doctor letter was a flight in the rural desert of Egypt.
Be sure to bring your prescription labels in case anything gets lost on your trip. That way you can easily refill. Do not check your meds-keep them in your carry on baggage.
Your bag of medicine does not count towards your carry on bag limit. So if you have a medicine bag and a large purse or carry on, there is no penalty or fee for that added med bag.
The hotel should definitely be able to accomodate you with the fridge.
