NBC time shifting Olympic coverage....again.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check to see, if we get that channel.

It was a theoretical comment. I didn't suspect that you live close enough to Canada to get their TV signals. That being said, Canadian coverage has often been well received.

I live about as far from Canada as you can get in the Continental US, so probably not. We actually watch very few of our channels, so I thought it may be one many Americans can get. Oh well, it was a thought.

We've never streamed the Olympics. Can we choose exactly which competitions we want to see that way?

Well, you can DVR whatever you want to watch. IF you have tv, you can sign into NBC Live Extras app, and then pick whatever you want to watch when it shows up there. They have it live for all sports and replay for some of them.

And yea I hate that delay thing. I can't wait til NBC's contract runs out after the next Olympics. Its not about prime time TV and ads. Its about SPORTS. Plus, everyone watches online and on DVR these days, so why delay it til prime time on the West Coast, thus ensuring that people in those states will be spoiled on the winners, get disgusted, and not watch at all? Just air them when they air, for either coast. And, don't force athletes to compete in the middle of the night so you can get it live prime time in New York! I was in Seattle at the last Summer Olympics. Missy Franklin was the home town hero. And they announced her winning gold on the news BEFORE they showed the broadcast. The next day, after a deluge of complaints, they had the newscaster say "If you don't want to know the scores, look away now..." like the BBC does. And then SAID THE WINNERS OUT LOUD. This is not rocket science, NBC!

First, NBCUniversal signed a long-term contract extension that gives them Olympics broadcast rights until at least 2032, which means four more Summer Olympics past Rio.

Also - Missy Franklin is from the Denver area.

I don't mind if the Opening Ceremonies are on an hour delay. There's a lot of crap and dead space in it that SHOULD be cut and edited.

I'm glad they plan to show much of the actual prime time competition live. I know it's not possible when there is a huge time difference, but Rio is only an hour ahead of Eastern time, so very feasible. NBC was severely criticized in 1996 for showing virtually nothing live from Atlanta. It was all delayed and edited into cutesy packages.

This will be my first Olympics with a VPN, so I'm hoping that will allow me to access a bunch of International feeds.

I'm just hoping they'll show more of the sports I like & mostly more Americans competing. I know I'm showing an obvious in which athletes I want to watch, but don't most people want to watch their country? I used to try not to miss a minute of the games. For the past couple of Olympics, there have been times when there was nothing on that I wanted to see.

All NBC shows is Americans. Watching their coverage you would think that the USA was the only country competing.

If they ever show one of the more obscure sports that we weren't supposed to medal in, there's a good chance we did. Then we'll get a 15 minute feature on a US athlete we've never heard of that makes it clear that he's got no real chance to medal, but he's just glad to compete. Then they'll show us the event and he'll medal.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Of course they need to time shift. You think it's easy deciding 15 minutes of commercials, 10 minutes of yapping at the desk, which 4 minutes of human interest bios and 1 minute of actual coverage every half hour? Can't do that on the fly. They might goof and show us 2 minutes of actual coverage or (gasp) 3.

Is NBC broadcast in other countries?

I suppose it will be broadcast to some overseas locations such as US military installations. However, they are the biggest rights holder, pay the most (I heard the provide about 40% of the IOC's operating budget), and have a huge influence on how the broadcasts are set up.

Maybe just across the border. Not sure if it's possible today, but I remember watching the Super Bowl in the 90s at a coworker's house where he had a massive satellite dish in his backyard. He was pulling in the direct, unencrypted satellite feed from the network. It was odd because we could see the national ads, but it blanked out during the time set for local ads. I'm not sure that they even do that these days. I think a lot of digital TV signals are sent through fiber these days.
