NBA Experience Coming to DTD (DS)

I think that nobody on this thread has addressed the real question ... if NBA City was apparently a failure at Universal, why is it being put into DTD?

Having been to both places, I would have thought that City Walk has a lot more of the, ah, NBA target audience dropping in regularly, whereas Disney tried pretty hard to discourage that element. Remember back in the day when they banned the star FL football player for life for hanging around DTD the way ... ah ... target audiences tend to like to do?

Until you people who know a lot more about these things fill me in, I'm going to guess that Disney was just plain desperate for tenants of some kind, any kind, to fill all that space in "the springs".
I think it will be interesting to see how well this does. I never heard that NBA city was a flat out failure but more just not as great as it probably could've been. This new NBA experience is going to be huge obviously and probably have a lot more to do than NBA city does. Disney would much rather have outsiders come in and pay them rent than themselves paying for spaces.

Post merger...

There are stiller fans everywhere...just saying

Hard to quantify

Like I said I know I am bias but there are packers fans everywhere as well. I'd agree that both the packers and steelers have some of the biggest fan bases of any team.

It's all in good fun...I appreciate your banter.

We are almost an identical age from the looks of it... I've been a critic long before what I loosely term "maturity" though...

I didnt grow up near Chicago but we got wgn and I watched every game of MJs career and loved that team... So sorry if I tweaked you too hard on the NBA...

It really isn't much of a game now (since I'm watching the finals now)...and the nfl is just a league of scumbags from top to bottom...and I grew up in perhaps the biggest/most loyal fanbase in the sport...

No...not Dallas... They gave themselves that nickname, remember ;)

No worries. I love a good verbal "spar." :)

Grew up watching MJ, Bird, Magic and Isaiah. Best era for the NBA, which unfortunately made it popular, and has turned it into the thing it is today. I enjoy it now, just not like I did back then.

Not to get off topic but what would that fan base be? If it's not the packers and I know I am bias I don't know who else that mot loyal fan base could be.

I'd say Packers, Dallas, Bears, Giants. IMO.

According to the artice in the Orlando Sentinel, it wasn't a failure at all. It was profitable. I ate there once - last August - and thought it was pretty good. You can't go in there expecing a gourmet menu. Just basic sports bar food. However, with Universal opening an NBC Sports (gotta have that corporate synergy) themed bar/grill type of place in the old NASCAR spot it would be be kinda redundant to keep NBA City. And of course, as mentioned in this thread already, given the NBA's relationship with ESPN, I'm sure both Disney and the NBA feel it's better to be at DTD.

Espn is 90% the NBA and NFL...the two things that are 1000% over saturated.

It's basically a network whose target demographic is the unemployed and those in the process of flunking out of college.
Target demographic? Desirable to advertisers? Likely to pay $$$ to attend NFL and NBA games? Demographic most likely to become a "cord cutter"? Certainly not a target demographic. I assume your comment is tongue and cheek. A caricature of what some people think are NBA fans.

I read, on the internet so we know it's true, Disney Quest generates a lot of revenue via birthday parities for kids. Lots of locals. That's the reason DQ has stayed as long as it has.

JMO but some locations at Disney are "place holders" for future attractions. Wonders of Life. Odyssey. For years Pleasure Island. I'll even put some active attractions in this category. Disney Quest for one. Probably add Carousel of Progress. Could even add Jungle Cruise. Some posters put half of the studios in this category.

Universal has more limited space. An attraction goes and construction for the replacement starts the day demolition is completed.

So last night's NBA Finals game was the highest rated NBA game in ABC's history. This TV contract next off season is going to be insane, Disney is really smart to build this right now.

Must be all of those unemployed and college flunkouts watching the game. You know, THOSE PEOPLE, that is the NBA's target audience.

More than half of this thread is insulting and derogatory, what a disgrace.

And the reason that ESPN doesn't cover the NHL is that ESPN is in the tv ratings business, and nobody watches the NHL. Why spend more than a limited amount of time on it?

The NBA is as good as it's been in 30 years, there are great players, great teams, and very marketable personalities. This NBA Finals matchup is the greatest forward in NBA history going up against the greatest shooter in NBA history.

Yeah, I'm just ignoring the insults towards the NBA because it's not worth being bothered by. I enjoy it, some people don't. ESPN has been complete garbage in terms of coverage for the majority of a decade, though.

The NBA pregame show had a higher tv rating (4.6) than the NHL Stanley Cup Final game 1 (4.2). The NBA game had a rating over 3x the size of the NHL game (12.9). THAT is why ESPN covers the NHL, NBA, & MLB... mostly in that order.

Oh, I work in TV, I know how that goes. What I'm saying is that ESPN's coverage such as Sportscenter has been garbage for a while, they create scandals and hype up nonsense.

It's a rumor at this point. Based on released concept art for Disney springs no building looks big enough to hold a space like this other than Disney quest. NBA experience is supposed to be three times the size of NBA city. NBA city is roughly 16,000 square feet. Disney quest is roughly 19,000 but has three floors...

DQ actually has 5 floors, so if this went in there it would only take about 2 1/2 - 3 floors.

This is pretty exciting... I think the Disney Quest building is far far far overdue to be re-done and have something new in its place. Should be interesting where this NBA Expirence goes.

We've only been to Disney Quest once. It was durung a 10-day stay where we had the Water Park, Fun & More option on our tickets. We liked it and we had a very good time there. It's just hard to justify a day (or even a 1/2 day) there - especially if you don't have the WP option and are paying separately for it - in lieu of one of the other parks when you can go to a Dave & Busters or another "arcade" type place at home. That said, I would prefer they find a different spot for the new NBA place. I'd rather they replace retail stores instead of DQ.

ESPN is really nothing more than TMZ with a focus on sports. My opinion is that they have major contributions to why the NBA and NFL have become tough to watch for most. And their coverage of almost anything has been horrible for a while. I do enjoy Karl Ravech on Baseball Tonight though.

This seems like a strange idea to be honest.

I think my opinion of the NBA is fairly obvious but I can understand how people don't like where the league is headed.
The only three things I enjoy about ESPN right now is grant land, 30 for 30' s and their fantasy football service/coverage. And seeing the former two are going away because they didn't resign bill Simmons you can see how much I have to enioy

I don't think they would replace retail stores with this. It would likely be DQ or a brand new building.

It's all tongue In cheek...as correctly identified.

You're " gripping the bat too tight" on the NBA...to be honest

And in case anyone wants to know the truth about NFL fanbases...here goes

The nfl became a nationally televised sport in the 70's...but didnt feature much "regional coverage" until the 80's.

So the dominant teams of the 70s have the most widespread fanbases:
Steelers
Dolphins
Cowboys
Redskins
Raiders

Add the pack after the success of Lombardi and there you have it. Only the 49ers of the 80s generated anything close on a national following.

There it be.

I can only watch 30for30, baseball/baseball tonight, and special sporting events like the major tennis events, golf, World Cup, EPL, etc.

Their regular coverage of main TV rights sports are killed by far to much saturation.
