NBA at Walt Disney World

They aren't just arriving in Orlando and quarantining for 48 hours. There have very strict testing and quarantine protocols:

Phase 2, which starts June 23, will have players being tested every other day, as well as the two days prior to when teams are scheduled to leave for Florida. Players' first test will be both a test for COVID-19 done via a shallow nasal swab and oral swab and an antibody test done via a blood draw. The COVID-19 test will be repeated every other day, and the antibody test will be repeated only if a player tests positive.

During Phase 3, which will be July 1-11, players will begin mandatory individual workouts at team facilities. Group workouts will remain prohibited, though the number of players allowed in a facility at one time will increase from four to eight. Head coaches will be allowed to participate in and watch individual workouts.

Phase 4 was split into two parts: July 7-11, which includes the teams' travel to Walt Disney World and the period afterward when they will be quarantined, and July 9-21, which covers the practice time teams will have once players and staff complete their quarantine period.
During the first part, for a player to be allowed to travel to Florida with his team:
  • He must have not tested positive for COVID-19 since league-wide testing began.
  • If he tested positive, he must have satisfied the criteria for the discontinuation of quarantine.
  • He must not have lived with anyone who has recently tested positive or exhibited symptoms associated with COVID-19.
Any player who fails to meet those standards will have to have arrangements to travel to Florida made by his team once he is cleared to do so.

Once teams arrive in Orlando, players and staff will be isolated in their rooms until they have two negative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests at least 24 hours apart, which means anywhere from 36 to 48 hours in the hotel rooms. After two negative tests, they will no longer have to quarantine.

Players will have the option to wear a "proximity alarm" that will notify them if they spend more than five seconds within 6 feet of another person on campus who is wearing an alarm. This is optional for players and possibly referees; it will be mandatory for all team and league staff members.

Players also will be allowed to wear a smart ring that could help with early detection of COVID-19. The rings will track temperature, respiratory and heart rate, among other measurements.

Once all players and staff have two negative tests, group workouts will be permitted. The league will continue to conduct COVID-19 tests, along with daily temperature checks, symptom surveys and use of a finger-clip device to measure oxygen levels. The testing could be as often as every day, with the protocol saying that the frequency will be based on the results of the tests.

After players have been cleared from quarantine, they will be allowed to socialize with players residing in the same hotel through July 21. From July 22 through the end of the playoffs, players will be allowed to spend time with any other player.

During Phase 5 (July 22-29), teams will play three scrimmages against other teams in the same hotel. Phase 6 covers the time teams will be playing in seeding and playoff games. Once teams are eliminated, players will be required to pass a COVID-19 test within 24 hours of their scheduled departures.
So has he had two negative tests?

There seemed to be quite a lot of outrage on twitter at him being out of his room so I'm just guessing he did something wrong.

Please read the article or do some research on the 100 page document that outlines the very stringent testing and quarantine protocols that are in place for the players. He isn't just isolating for 48 hours. If you had actually read what I posted, you would see that he had to take an EXTRA test because he arrived via different transportation from the team. Based on protocol, he may very well be tested every day.

Players are not quarantining before they arrive in Orlando. They have had contact with whomever they chose to. Yes, they have procedures in place to catch any outbreak, but a 2 day quarantine is a waste of time...it may as well be 0 because it will make no difference. Someone could just as easily test positive a week from now due to something they did back home.

If you mean one poster on twitter who isn't in the bubble so isn't privy to what is actually happening there, ok.

You seem to be very interested in covid safety and protocols (not a bad thing! Just an observation). I would really encourage you to read the ESPN article I posted which outlines what they are doing in the bubble in terms of testing and quarantining. These guys are being poked, prodded, tested and isolated more than probably most world leaders at this point. I look at it as really an experiment to see if testing and isolating really works. For what it's worth, there were a number of players who did not go because they tested positive during the initial testing period that started on June 23. These guys aren't just showing up and sitting in their rooms for 48 hours.

According to the Lakers, he has been tested more than the players who arrived via team flight - he had to get an extra test. If he did something that went against protocol, I'm sure it will be dealt with in short order. The NBA needs the bubble to work. They aren't going to let one player derail the whole project.

The players have been tested every other day since June 23, two days prior to arrival and have to have two negative tests upon arrival. I'm going to put some faith in the numerous medical professionals who helped draft the 100-page testing and quarantine protocols.

Ok but there is no science to show someone will test positive two days after being exposed to covid...hence the fairly standard 14 day quarantine mandates. Had these guys been quarantining before hand youd have a point, but they werent.

Mls is also having a disaster right now.

The NBA bubble, literally, just started. The players who did test positive since testing started June 23 aren't participating. The players are being tested regularly - every other day and then multiple tests once onsite. They have been tested multiple times over a two week period. Starting testing on June 23 and then testing every other day after that wasn't just random. June 23 was 15 days prior to arriving in Orlando.

There is no disaster in the NBA right now so I don't think we can use the word "also" yet. Can't we just wait and see what happens before we rush to judgement here? These guys are being poked, prodded, tested and isolated more than even most of our world leaders at this point and the protocols were developed with the input of multiple medical experts. It is a grand health and social experiment which many industries may be able to learn from.

Because he insulted ... checks notes ... a hotel room? Yikes.
He’s always been a jerk, all I’m saying is oh well. Don’t read too much into it. Moving on!

Regarding room types, are players scattered based on popularity/being a starter? Like will James be in a deluxe suite in GDT versus others being in the main room floors? Just curious.

Some of the rooms themselves (a lot), not resorts, but rooms, are very average rooms and on the small side, especially when you consider the types of hotels I’m assuming NBA players would usually be staying in. Even the regular GF rooms are nothing special.

Not surprised and don’t really blame players for feeling a certain way about them. DISers have been known to say similar things 😂.

Right, the only difference is these guys aren’t paying for the rooms. I think someone mentioned up thread that some were complaining about the food but the NBA provided their chefs?
