NBA at Walt Disney World

Yeah, I think it is wise that they did not make any final decisions tonight. Cancel the games tomorrow, sleep on it, think about ways to stay and leverage power and whether that would be enough. Being in the Bubble also gives them the unique opportunity to all be in one place and one room to hash this out - in a regular playoff scenario they would all be scattered across the country in groups of two teams. Watching some of the player vlogs from earlier in the bubble they were already using the environment to have a lot of important conversations within their teams. I think they have a ton of power in this setting and there is likely a lot they can ask for and get to amplify their message if they stay. But having said all that, I understand if they ultimately don’t feel like that is enough and decide to leave.

Agree and like I said earlier I think the decision will ultimately be do they think they can they do more in Orlando or can they do more back home. So hopefully the owners can come up with some ideas of ways to use the platform in Orlando to help. We'll see. Tomorrow will be interesting (as if today wasn't).

I don't see how decisions that will affect all the teams already out of the playoffs who both never played in the bubble, and who played and lost (and went home from the bubble) will be able to be made by the players without all players from all teams voting.

There would be some sort of legal ramification player to player (and the union reps would get fried and fired) if they didn't get the rest of the input...

If this puts lockouts and extra reduced compensation in 2020-2021 in play, 14 teams of players can't just sign off for the rest...

The players union is involved in all this and I'm sure they are talking to teams not in the bubble. They are the ones who represent all the players and are they are right in the middle of this.

Right, which is why there was the reminder message to the union reps...I'm not sure anyone thought of those folks til the message...

That's actually not much money vs their salaries...now I can see why the players will risk that. It seems if the playoffs ends early, it's the owners (for now) that will get financially screwed, not really the players...

NHL players aren't paid salary for the playoffs. Baseball gets some, but like with bball it's not all. Salaries are based on the regular season, with bonuses and stuff for the post season. If the post season was accounted for in a players yearly salary so many would be out of luck by not making the playoffs.

No other group of workers could pull this sort of work stoppage without losing their job. I have no respect for this type of job action.

I remember when PATCO union tried this. President Regan warned them return to work or your fired. Yes President Regan fired them.
Get a job where you are in the top .001% of humans at performing that job and you can do this sort of thing.

From what I've been reading I think that is the player's conundrum. I think many want to go home to their communities and fight for change there but I think there is also a sense they might be able to do more in Orlando with the huge platform they have with TV and everything going on but they are not sure how best to use that. I think that is why they are asking the owners for help not that they want the owners to do things for them but want help on figuring out how best to use their platform in Orlando for good. I think they want to stay and play but they also want help in figuring out how to do that AND fight for what they want at the same time.
100% agree.
The platform for the NBA and the players is now.
In the bubble, where 14 teams are grouped together. The focus is on them, the media attention is there, they have power to do something here and now.

If they boycott the season, everyone goes back to their hometown, and their impact as a group is less than what it can be. Sure there will still be players such as Lebron front and centre in the news for a couple weeks. But then NFL starts, NHL gets deeper into the playoffs, back to school. They will find it tougher to achieve what they want. With all those players together in the bubble, with the second round getting ready to start, the time to get the nations attention is right now.

There is no way the season continues. Even if the players decided not to boycott and continue the games, it would be on the minds of different players during the games and either they will say it affected their play or they just wont play. And there is no way that every single game will be played until the end of the championships. The only way they are united in a decision is to stop playing. Guarenteed. I expect an announcement that the games are all cancelled by tomorrow evening.

Atlanta Hawks said in June that they are opening up the State Farm Arena as a massive voting center to allow social distancing and reduce wait times at the polls. Parking fees at the arena have been waived. I have to assume the players are interested in innovative ideas like this that only the owners can really implement. I just think the players don't necessarily know what those innovative ideas are right now and they are struggling with that.

We are ATL UTD fans and they decided not to play last night. My husband asked me what missing one game really does. Then I read him some of the previous posts on this thread. One poster that said the canceled NBA games made her son ask questions- my 10 yr old daughter also asked the same questions about the MLS. It opened more conversation in our house.

If they TRULY believe this man was shot not because of his actions, but because of his skin color, they should put their money where they mouth is and cancel the rest of the playoffs.

But I think they should wait and let all the facts come out and make a more informed decision.

They don't care about his actions, think he was mistreated because of his skin color regardless of what he did.

Actually, last night, they were united, save 2 teams, in continuing and pressing their message from the bubble. But with dual LA "unofficially" being done and walking out (b/c being done for real had huge financial and legal ramifications to them that they had not thought of yet), no one left could figure out what that looked like...so, to unite, LA has to come back together...or the rest have to throw in the towel...

There’s a huge difference between leaving a nation stranded and putting lives at risk by not going to work and a game. I have all the respect in the world for them.

This isn’t about this one incident. If you listen to what the players and teams are saying this one incident was sort of the catalyst. They were discussing this before even going to the bubble.

I think the video of the guy shooting up the protesters and walking away is enough evidence of why these things happen the way they do.
