Navigating November 2025 W.I.S.H. Thread

This morning I woke up feeling sickly, as if a cold is coming on. Ugh. Really need to not be sick this week, as I'm supposed to be traveling this weekend to lead another on-site testing effort and there's a lot to get done before then. It does explain why I had so little energy over the weekend and why barely anything got done. I also didn't get nearly enough protein in me, so still working on that.

I know we are sans leader this week but I was on a call today and heard a question that would make an interesting topic Tuesday. Before the days of phones and portable dvd players how did you pass time on long car rides?

When my brother and I were kids, we used to bring the box of cards from the Trivial Pursuit game, and my mom would read questions for us to answer.

We also had Car Bingo cards with little plastic sliders, and we played that game where you had to find the letters of the alphabet in order on signs, other cars' plates, etc.

With DS, I did the same alphabet game, plus one we called "three scenarios" where we had to come up with three different possible explanations for weird or interesting things we saw along the way.

I also remember having a magnetic board to keep track of license plates from each state. - Somehow, we got Hawaii once! (on the drive between Boston, MA, and the Finger Lakes region in NY)

We sang to the radio and played the license plate game…how many different states could you spot on the ride. My parents were the type to go on Sunday rides just for fun and then eat dinner at a fancy restaurant. I used to get carsick in the back seat and hated every minute of it. It didn’t help that my parents were smokers and only cracked the windows open an inch. Also, the seatbelts were tucked under the seats so I was rolling around in the back.

As an adult, I read books. I don’t get carsick, but I wear my seatbelt, and nobody is smoking.

We also had the car bingo cards, altho they don't seem like something my parents would have bought so must have come from the grandparents. And we would play the "I spy with my little eyes..." guessing game.

For many years we had a Ford Econoline van (the first model they put out) that my Dad had tricked out for camping. There was a bunk bed across the upper back and one or two kids would nap in it when we were driving. Looking back thru today's safety standards, I'm amazed that we survived childhood.

It has been a busy week at work this week. There is no reason for it to be busy as this is our slow time, but lots popped up. I am in the office for the first time in 2 months tomorrow. I can't wait but dreading it at the same time. I think I am going to be exhausted by the end of the day.

When I was younger we did the license plate game. I don't remember anything else. I was the one who slept the whole way. Cars just put me to sleep. We went a few times to Myrtle Beach. We had a cavalier. I am the shortest in the family so I had to sit in the middle all the time. It was nice though as I was allowed to but my feet on the center console. It was more comfortable. Though heaven forbid I laid a head on either siblings shoulder. My mom was always one to have us in seatbelts. We were also always in a car seat. Maybe I remember it more because I was much older in a booster because I am so short. Now if I was with my dad it was a different story. I remember driving to his house (they lived about 30 minutes from my mom) in the hatch back part of the car on the highway. They never had us in a seat belt. My two younger brother were also never in a car seat (they were born in the 90's. I am 10 and 13 years older than them). I remember then climbing all over the car or sitting on my step mom's lab while she drove.

I just realized next week is Thanksgiving... holy cow, how did that happen? I'm thankful for the short work week and I'm also thankful that I'm just taking charcuterie. I have the work trip this weekend, so can't shop until next week. I'm hoping to pick everything up in one trip to the fancy deli downtown on Monday... but of course I can also drag it out to multiple trips to multiple stores if I really want to.

MOTIVATION MONDAY
I am motivated by a short work week. I just have to get through two days. In the past, we had to work three days with a half day on Wednesday. This year, we have Wednesday off which will help with Thanksgiving preparations.

Self-care yesterday was going to bed early with a good book.

Motivation today is so far non-existent. 😆 But I have a class in a couple hours, so I will get off my duff and get moving.

TOPIC TUESDAY

PollyannaMom certainly knows all about this. The practice of writing what you are thankful for on a daily basis is a practice that I would love to try. Maybe that could be my New Year’s resolution.

Catching up...

No time for self-care Sunday, it was a get it done work day. The testing went OK... my philosophy is that "things" are always going to happen, it's what you do about the "things" that matters, and we all did the right things about the "things".

Yesterday was mostly a travel day. I spent time on the plane and at home last night sorting thru some of the challenges I've been having at work. I'm mapping out the three highest stress/overwhelm inducers and what I can do to manage them better. Unfortunately one of them is the dynamic with a co-worker which is going to be challenging to re-balance, but I have to do it because the way she is doing her job (micro-managing and continually doing my job) is killing me. And across the board I need to be taking better care of myself. To this end, I restarted my stretching exercises last night and I'm (still) focused on increasing protein... wish me luck!

This year has been crap and it seems to be never ending. I got a jury summons (not a horrible thing but not what I wanted to be doing) for December 15th and I just found out I need a root canal next week. I am really over this year and would to have a very nice an quiet year in 2026. It has just been a really long rough year starting really right after Thanksgiving last year.

I am doing better with getting more exercise. I went for 2 walks yesterday. Today it is going to rain all day so I will get on the treadmill. I also need to stop at the store to get some stuff for baking. I am going to make a pineapple upside down cake, a pumpkin roll and a vanilla swiss roll plus deviled eggs and stuffing to take to DH's family and mine for Thanksgiving. Tomorrow I will get everything done and then take the food for my mom's over to her just incase they start eating before I get there. We are coming from almost an hour away (where DH's mom lives) so my mom knows it is ok to start eating without me.
