i also convinced a bunch of my friends to do it too.

VVVVVVVVVVVVVVV look!!!

Yep, that's right. This year's Day of Silence is being dedicated to Lawrence King, but it's about the discrimination that GLBTQs face.

From the dayofsilence.org website:

"The Day of Silence (www.dayofsilence.org), a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), is a student-led day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students and their allies. This year’s Day of Silence will be held in memory of Lawrence King."

I participated last year, and will be again this year. I even get to hand out ribbons tomorrow. :p

I think it's a great thing, and I didn't think I would able to do it either, but I did!
Tis what I thought, just couldn't get the correct words out. :)

im not gay, but if i had known about it i would have done it

It's tomorrow, you can still do it.

I don't have school tomorrow, but unfortunately if I did they wouldn't do anything for it and haven't in the past.
I also know only a handful of people would do it.
I'll try to since I'll be home.

Yeah.
That's what my english teacher said.
We are handing out packets, explaining why we are silent.

Go jbcheerchick93!! You rock!! You too, SplshMntLvr28!!

Oh, and ITA on the Team Jacob thing in your sig, LOL :)

I'm wearing my ribbon! (It's yellow, LOL)

why thank you!! im bringing in the cards and everything so that i dont have to explain(talking) to my teachers and friends. TYPE to you guys tomorrow!!

I would have liked to have done this but it's not been promoted much here. Also, i've no school tomorrow and it's rather hard to be quiet in such a loud house. I'll be with you all in spirit though!

Gosh I want to SOO bad!
But I won't be in school, and I don't think my family or my tutor will appreciate it if I don't utter a single word.
I promise tho, that I'll try to talk as less as I can.

Like George, I'll be there with ya in spirit!

BTW, RIP Lawrence King.

but yea im not participating

btw that wasnt an insult to anyone i just thought of it when i read this post

The teacher would kick them out of class?! For standing up for rights?!

WOW.

I mean, I can see that it disrupts the class and all, but what about standing up for what you believe in?

Honestly, I don't care if I do get in trouble tomorrow. Let's see...

History: Playing Jeopardy, but participation not required.
Math: Should be okay.
Science: Might get talked to, but should be able to get by.
Advisory: Joke period, really.
Spanish: Half the class is doing it, and she doesn't have a problem.
Gym: No talking required!
Keyboarding: Can manage this class with no talking.

I don't really care if I get in trouble.

I completely agree! But she was all like "Their standing up to show that they have equal rights as everybody else? I'd kick them out just like I would with any other straight student." She said something along those lines...

She seriously said that?!

0_0 gosh.

So what if a straight student participated? What would she say then?

People these days. So homophobic or unsupporting. They just don't understand. *shakes head*

I kinda agree with that.

She would tell a straight person to get out too.
I had to be silent for a whole day for ASL to see whats it like to be deaf and not be able to speak. But my ASL teacher notified the whole staff.

I guess I kind of agree, that not speaking the WHOLE day wouldn't be able to happen, but atleast a moment of silence, you know?

Yeah, being silent for a whole day doesn't really do much to help the awareness of gay discrimination. I think it could be a good idea if schools could put aside two minutes in the morning to hold a moment of silence, but it probably wouldn't happen in many places since it's so controversial.

^^ Yeah. I mean it would be nice if our school participated, but their's a ton of lessons we have and don't get.

This is my third or fourth year participating. I took an F as a grade last year, because my teacher was trying to bully me into speaking. It lowered my grade in there by two letters, but I managed to bring it back up before report cards came out.

Stand up for what you believe in, even if you're standing alone.

Sparx, that is awesome! Good for you! I know I won't be totally alone this time (one of my friends is doing this with me), but if I were to, I still would.

Sadly, some of my friends are down in Baltimore for this music festival thing (band and chorus). I know they'd do it, if they were here.

So, even if you can't go a whole day (or a school day), try to observe a moment or so of silence. Perhaps when you have the moment of silence at school, think of this. If you're reading this after school, take a few moments before you go to bed. Thank you, all! Good luck to all who are taking the vow today! :)

I forgot. I don't have school this week lol.

I guess I will be doing it, and talking only here on the DIS.
