Iam not gay or lesbian:) or anything but like you i have several friends who are and i am participating in the Day of Silence. I have this class called JROTC and we are required to say "here first sargent" when he calls our names but those participating in the day of silence did not and he made us do lots of push ups well this is a school approved event so we went to the principal and got our instuctor in trouble for discrimination

Alright, so I did it!

A ton of people in my school had awesome teeshirts that said "I am screaming" or " you may think I am sient, but I am screaming for help" or "action speaks louder than words"

They were awesome.

Go OneTreeHill and jasmine1991!! YOU ROCK!!

I sucessfully did it :) Lots of people had the official Day of Silence t-shirts, as well as the speaking cards pinned on. I had my ribbon. Didn't get in trouble, but almost did a few times. Luckily, my teachers were understanding. I know some aren't, though.

I'm still silent, though. Attempting to do a full day! Whew, but it's so worth it. I'm fighting for my rights, as well as the rights for all of "us".

To all you CSP (Cool Straight People), it's really awesome that you're doing this. Hugs for all!

I would have done it because there's a lot of stupid people in my school who are prejudiced against gays. However, I didn't hear about it until today because I've been gone all week. Can I have a magic remote so I can rewind? Lol.

My brothers boyfriend did it. He got told off a lot and we wound him up by talking to him but he survived.
=]

My boyfriend participated with me. I was so proud of him. He took a lot of crap from the rednecks at school for it, because he's a guy. It was breaking my heart, but he lasted all day. Got some serious points with me. This was my cause, not his, but he supported it because he knew it was important to me. Some guys were dogging him at lunch, but he never broke the vow.

This is my fourth year, but it was his (and several of my other friends) first years doing it. I really hope that it hit them as hard as it always has me, and they continue to participate.

i tried so hard to do it. i really did. only one of my teachers didnt "understand" and she forced me to talk. i am not willing to get an f, it would mean lots of punishment at my house, even if it was a good cause. when i talked to the teacher i broke down crying for a long time. all of my friends were so supportive. when i was crying, all of them (even the jerkiest guy) was saying, dont worry jesse, you can still do it, its fine. i was heartbroken. other than the four words i used, i made it the whole schoolday.

Congrats, you guys!

Aww, I'm sorry, jbcheerchick93! It's ok, we'll forgive you (hugs you).

Sparx, that's really cool, that your boyfriend did this with you. He gets props from me! I like his attitude about it, too. Good for him, for ignoring the comments and sticking to it!

I wish I had remembered this morning, and had at least tried, but I forgot =/
My social studies partner was participating though, the only person I knew that was doing it. She had a note explaining to the teachers why she was not speaking and making funny hand signals.
She made it through the entire day. She did get some crap, because people don't take it seriously, they just don't. The girls, they totally get it, they're horrified when they're told the story. The guys kind of give you a look and start giggling.

She was wearing like a gas mask thing at one point though... like the kind renovators use when they go into mouldy buildings and they don't want to get sick.
Was that something people were supposed to do, or was it just her own personal thing?

Question: Why should be be silent for an entire day for gays/lesbians??
Im sorry, but they are people, love is love, its almost like disrespect to be completely silent for a day, to me thats like saying "If you dont have anything nice to say, then dont say it at all" which in fact, the only thing I have to say is nice things, I cant think of 1 thing that I could say that would offend them.

I just dont get it. I support it, but I dont support silence.

Yeah, being silent for a whole day doesn't really do much to help the awareness of gay discrimination. I think it could be a good idea if schools could put aside two minutes in the morning to hold a moment of silence, but it probably wouldn't happen in many places since it's so controversial.

I'd just like to point out that it's something bigger. The Day of Silence is a day of recognition and rememberance, yes, but it's a huge part of a lot of people.

It was organized to bring awareness to anti-GLBT bullying and harassment in schools all around the world.

The silence of those who choose not to speak represents the suffering of people who have spent years keeping who they are hushed up and locked away because they were afraid of what would happen if they spoke up.

It's a day to prove to the world that everybody has something that they keep hidden away, only some secrets weigh more than others.

It isn't a day to just remember one boy who was killed. This particular day of silence was held in memory of him, but really, it's in memory of anybody whose ever borne this secret.

That was probably really confusing, so sorry. :goodvibes

Anyway, I did it last week with the rest of my school because we're on vacation this week and we still wanted to get our day of silence in while we were still someplace where we could be effective. I didn't speak except for when I slipped up twice in science (I SLIPPED UP ON "YOUR MOM" JOKES!). But the rest of the day went smooth. All my teachers understood completely and most even mentioned that they'd like to do it next year if we give them more warning (this year was kinda rushed because of our last-minute date change).

One of my crush's friends is a complete ******* and he was gay-bashing all day and finally John just decked him and my life was good again.

My school supports it completely.
They were handing out "Day of Silence" stickers in the guidance office, all you had to do was sign your name and they'd give you one.
The teachers were really understanding, too.

The only problem with the school being so supportive of it was that most kids used it just to get out of class participation, which kinda takes away from it.
But I'm still glad my school's behind it and actively put it out there.
I participated.

Awww. Hugs for you too.
I almost got in trouble. My math teacher is a witch, and tryed to force me to talk.
But I refused.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying. And I agree. I don't know, I deal with being gay everyday and I would much rather do something about it by protesting instead of sitting silently at school and home.

Aww, thanks OneTreeHill!

Axel, very well put. A+ answer! ;)

Babyjustrun, it was most likely her own idea. I've never seen or heard of that before! Still, I agree with you, people just don't understand.

This explain why on band tour alot of people werent talking... from the one middle school we went too... i guess i didnt know about it till now so i didnt participate

EEWW! How can you guys support GAY people?! God made Adam and EVE, not Adam and STEVE!! No offense.....it's not that I hate the people, What i don't like is what they're doing. Their actions.

Sorry, but I'm just telling the truth. I live by a rule: "Thou shall not lie."

Just expressing myself.
By the way, you said can, instead of can't.
