As for the day of silence, I had this to say on another thread.

many Gay youths never report what happens to them out of fear. A gay teen will hear a anti-gay slur once every 14 minutes by their classmates. Gay teens are 2-3 times more likely to commit suicide. Around 28% of gay students will drop out of school simply because they do not feel safe (that is more than 3xs the national average!)
I guess what I feel is that the majority of people still feel that picking on or making fun of gays is acceptable.

Did you know that at least half of homophobes are gay themselves, but afraid of it? Think about that now.

I'd like to point out that to me, personally, Easter, Christmas, and Lent are worthless and they take up a larger portion of the year than one day. All Easter and Christmas are good for is candy and presents. And Lent is a perfect example of punishing yourself for no real reason.
