The air has been deflated out of my balloon. A couple of months ago, in the school newsletter, they announced that the school had been chosen to take part in submitting children's poetry. The Librarian submitted the poems, and the school was hoping some children would be published.

A couple of weeks ago, my son brings home a letter addressed to him at the school's address. HIS poem had been chosen to be published. I was ecstatic. So very proud! The letter told us what they based the judging on, ect.

I had to sign a release form, giving them permission to publish his poem in a book titled Young American Poets. Along with the permission slip, was an order form. I can buy my pride and joy a copy for $14.25 per copy.
Of course, I am going to buy 10 copies and hand them out, right?

I was also excited, because 9 years ago, my neice, at the same age, same school, she was publsihed. My sister bought me a book. It was so exciting. We were all so proud. So I was telling everyone, if my mom and dad were alive, they would have TWO grandchildren with published poetry.

I called one of my other sister's to tell her, and she says, "oh,yeah, Josh had his poem chosen also" (4 years ago). I asked my son how many kids in his class got the same letter, he thinks everyone.

I am now thinking this is a scam. I am not buying 10 books now, I am buying TWO. One for us, and one for my MIL. It is starting to sink in with me, a parent thinks their child won a great creative contest, and they are so proud. Most people have extended family who would also be proud. So I am betting, the average book order is 4 books x's $14.25/each.

You see, if they just published a bunch of kids poems, and try to sell it, it probably wouldn't sell very well. But, make it seem like there was a contest, and your kid won, out of thousands of entries, what do you think would happen?

So, I would like to kind of prove my theory, have you heard of National School projects and a book called Young American Poets? Has your child been published in it? Do you know anyone who has?

I am still happy and excited for my son, but I felt funny writing out the check. I can't NOT buy a couple of copies.
