This past trip was the first time renting National and being an Emeral Club member.

Had made reservations on line and reserved a full size car. So we went over to the garage and picked out a car and drove it to the checkout kiosk. Gave the woman my credit card, cupon, and the paper hanging from the rear view mirror. She gave me back my credit card and said I was all set. I didin't sign anything and I didn't have any paperwork to show I rented the car.

Was this normal? no paperwork?

BTW, picked a Buick Century. This usually works out great. No youngsters would purposly choose that car. So when I got in, it was already set to the oldies station. And I was all set to go see the flower power concerts.

Yes, that is normal. EC members have all that info on file. You will get a printout of the charges when you return the car.

That's exactly how it goes. Pretty painless. We're spoiled.

What was worrying me was, since I didn't have any paperwork from National, if the police stopped me, I wouldn't have any proof I rented the car.

But, I agree. It is definitely hastle free.

I often wondered about that also, but, they do give the hang tag back.

I always wondered about that too but I've never had a problem (never been stopped ). When you rent at the counter you get the printout with your name and the vehicle info but with EC you just have the hangtag and your reservation. I guess they could call National to verify if you were stopped.
