My friend just signed up for National's EC (via the free Turner Travel link) and he told me he used his debit card that is linked to his checking account. It has the Visa logo on it.

Can he use this or should he use a CC? The membership took it no problem, but will he run in to problems later?

Thanks.

The one nice thing about using a regular credit card is that often they offer some kind of extra insurance for rental cars. Most places will let you pay for your car with a debit card, but you will most likely have to give them a card number for a real credit card incase you drive off with the car and never return. They can then charge your credit car for the cost of the car.

National accepts debit cards both to reserve and to pay at time of return.
There is no need to change to a credit card unless he just wants to.

My Visa-stamped debit card can be used as a debit OR credit card, I assume they are all like that so I think it should be fine anyway. EX: If I go to the self-checkout at the grocery or Wal-Mart, sometimes I hit debit for card type, sometimes I hit credit, it works both ways.

Just a heads up - according to their website, if you reserve with a debit card within the U.S., you'll need to present a round-trip travel ticket in order to use a debit card; therefore, you could use the debit card if you were, say, renting at the airport, but you couldn't use a debit card to rent a vehicle where you live, drive that vehicle to FL and then return it.

Debit Cards

When renting in the U.S., debit and check cards may only be used in conjunction with proof of a round trip travel ticket (airline, cruise ship or train) at time of rental. A debit/check card is considered to be any non-credit card bearing the Visa or MasterCard logo. Any other non-credit card without the Visa or MasterCard logo is not accepted. For pick-ups in the United States, without proof of roundtrip ticket, debit or check cards are only accepted when returning the vehicle. A credit card in the name of the renter must be presented at the time of pick-up.

I just flew to Raliegh NC a week ago and had to rent a car to drive down to Sunset Beach. We reserved the car online with Hertz with a debit card with Visa Logo. It took it. The day we picked up the car they did a check for available credit and had no problems at all picking it up. Then when we brought it back they took the money out pretty quick. It was out of bank account before we even got home.
