National Car Rental Toll Pass

This is how it works with Alamo. We've used it twice. No signup was required, at least when I asked at the desk back in October. This time I didn't even bother asking so I hope nothing has changed!

Just drive normally, keeping up with the flow of traffic. I wouldn't recommend slowing down and certainly not stopping since traffic is coming up behind you at 55+ MPH.

ETA: If you are talking about driving through a toll booth then yes there is usually a posted speed limit, usually 10mph or so. On the drive between MCO and WDW you don't go through any toll booths, you stay on the highway. There are cameras above the highway lanes that take a picture of your license plate as you cruise along at highway speeds.

Ok good...sounds like I did OK then - I slowed down when going through a booth (probably not quite down to 10mph) and just drove normally otherwise. How long does it take to bill? I logged into the toll website where you can check/print off a receipt of charges and it still shows nothing for me.

According to the Highway Toll Admin website it depends on the rental car company. I used Alamo and they say that can take up to a month. I remember the first time I used this option back in October I checked that site multiple times and never did see my receipt. After a while I forgot to check. The charge did appear on my credit card statement within a month or so and seemed like the right amount.

Great! Thanks for your help!!

we're run into issue of not having change for un-manned on on southern route back to MCO..
Is there a number or address posted on the toll booth so you can contact the turnpike agency yourself?

Looks like I'll be taking quarters with me! LOL!
Suggest getting a receipt whenever possible.

How does this work exactly?... when driving through the EZPASS lanes - I didn't really stop...was I supposed to have slowed down to a certain speed or something??
I would suggest not exceeding the posted speed limit for fear the toll sensors might misread your EZ pass or Sunpass or whatever. Don't forget that EZ pass used in the northeast quadrant does not work in Florida.

I think it's despicable that a toll road has areas in which all of the toll booths are unmanned. Particularly a toll road that handles a lot of tourists.
Use the Beach Line (528) and I-4.

Leaving the north airport exit, take left at first light, little over a mile is next light where you take two quick lefts to get on it (Beach Line). Look for what looks like an exit ramp to pay the toll if you are going to use cash.

Returning to airport via I-4 east to 528 east, again use the "exit ramp" for cash tolls. Get off 528 at its exit 9 (Tradeport). Left and cross under, get into middle lane, required right onto McCoy, next light is 436 (Semoran) and turn right to enter the airport.

Florida is not the only state where you may have to take a ramp off to the side to pay tolls using cash.

So I can't find where to sign up for the toll service with National - one website I found said there was no signup required and just gets activated if you go through one of the automated lanes. Anyone have any experience with this?

This can't be how it works because I rent from National every time we are in Florida and I have my own SunPass that we use. I do not get any charge from National for tolls.

My understanding is that if you go through the toll and don't have a transponder, the system takes a picture of your license plate. They use that info to bill you for the toll. So you don't get billed because you have a transponder. When I rent (I use Alamo) we don't have a transponder so eventually we get billed for the toll and Alamo's $2/day, $6 max/rental convenience charge.

We decided to try this for the first time back in October and asked someone at the Alamo desk to confirm we did not need to sign up and were told that no signup is required. Not sure if it works the same for National so if it's not spelled out somewhere on their website, just ask at the desk in MCO.

DH got routed onto a toll road accidentally (silly GPS) and didn't have any change. It was late at night and the tollbooth was unmanned.

He noticed they have handy-dandy envelopes, with the toll and the tollbooth info on it. He took one.

I then mailed a check in for 1.00 (the toll was .50 but I figured a check for that amount was ridiculous, and I wanted to make SURE I was paying the right amount, so I gave 'em a little extra). You put date and approx time and your license plate info.

We never heard anything from FL or from National, but the check was cashed about a month later, so it took care of it!

If you ever get stuck with no change and an unmanned tollbooth, look for those envelopes!!!!!

We used it during our March trip. $4 for usage for the 2 days we used tolls, and then the actual tolls showed up on our CC a few weeks later.

One warning, when returning to MCO via Beachline (528) through the SunPass lanes to the far left of the plaza, the airport exit is RIGHT after the toll readers. It was never a problem when I used to do the cash fare, but this time I accelerated right by the off ramp on leaving the plaza. (DW: "Um honey, I think that's the offramp over there across those 4 lanes of traffic" :rotfl: Had a bit of fun circling back to the airport.
