I know. My heart breaks for them. I can't even imagine the pain, especially for Natalee's mother who doesn't even have her daughter's remains.

If he gets convicted AND locked up for this crime, chances are someone may finally come forward with evidence and credible testimony regarding Hollaway. Since his father died and with him locked up, witnesses may not have the same fear of retaliation from his family.

He has never been charged with Natalie's disappearance.

Sure he can! If they come up with evidence to PROVE that they can tie him to the murder then yes...they can charge him. But at this point, the investigation has been so badly botched I don't know if they will EVER be able to actually convict him for the Halloway murder without her actual body. That's why he's not in jail now...they don't have enough evidence that they feel is stong enough to convict.

Coworker just read in the Chilean paper that if Interpol does not get involved within 24 hours that he will be released.

Anyone else heard anything about this?

ETA- Okay, had him read me the paper that he was looking at. States that the Chilean police will release him from jail, but will keep him in a like protective custody situation, till Interpol takes custody. Whew, had be worried they were just going to release him to go about his business.

Sure he can! If they come up with evidence to PROVE that they can tie him to the murder then yes...they can charge him. But at this point, the investigation has been so badly botched I don't know if they will EVER be able to actually convict him for the Halloway murder without her actual body. I don't think they really have any evidence, do they? Just that he was the last known person with her. Sure, he changed his story over and over again, but that is about it, right?

Exactly...it's all considered "circumstantial". There is no "physical" evidence. There WAS however along the way tests were botched, tapes miraculously disappeared, people who had at once stated they would come forward no longer willing to cooperate etc. I've read (which is clearly biased) Natalee's mom's book, but seriously, how she got through this is amazing. She has much more strength than I EVER could during that investigation. It was almost laughable at how botched it was. Very sad.

I thought Interpol is European? Wouldn't the Peruvian government have priority? Since this is a fresh homocide, and it was in his room, and only days old?

ETA: I stand corrected. Always Google first. Interpol is definitely world-wide, international, not just European.
