When I read about situations like this I always come up with what would have been a fun response (of course it is nothing that I would ever actually do).
To this one it seemed to me that the wife was the ruder of two. I have visions of walking over and addressing myself to the husband.
"I'm sorry but I couldn't help but overhear and I want you to know that my heart goes out to you and I have the greatest sympathy for your situation"
Of course at this point they are eating it up thinking that I am siding with them.
"How tragic, your wife's condition and all. What is the name of that disorder where a person can't help themselves but make rude and nasty comments? That is so sad and must be a real burden for you."
