Nassau

Hi, dh and I are going to Nassau in May for our 10th anniversary. We are staying at the Wyndham Nassau Resort.
Can anyone tell me fun/inexpensive things to do and eat?

My work paid for the hotel so I can't change that

I would recommend you check out the cruisecritic.com forum. It is a forum like the dis except for cruises. Nassau is one of the main ports. If you check out the destination port thread in the forum you will find Nassau and it will provide a ton of ideas of things to do and see in Nassau. I hope that helps.

I've only been there on cruises (including a day pass at the Sheraton, now another property, next to the Wyndham - the daquiri shack is across the street - great cheap drinks!).

Day pass at Atlantis
Blue Lagoon Island
Rum tour (not sure of the name)
Historic walking tour
Fish Fry (a few miles from you - local restaurant area)
Snorkle tours

The #10 jitney runs right by the Wyndham, so if you're not renting a car, it's a cheap way to get around. Make sure you take the #10 and not the 10A!

we went to Nassau for part of our honeymoon we stayed at Sandals.

through Sandals we were able to get a lot of tours around the island and city. I recommend a island tour, it was an all day tour which stop at several places one including the old fort which over looks the cruise ships from atop of the fort.

we also did a lot of stuff on out own. we took advantage of city buses which are privately own and are just vans. they are very cheap to get on. there are no really bus stops so you can get off just about anywhere you want just yell STOP and they will let you off.

we spent a lot of time just walking around the city and looking at all the building.

there are some tourist stuff to do like the Pirate museum, the market place. the fish market

also there is great snorkeling all round the island

Without a doubt, it is the grossest hotel on the island. Dirty and run down.

HUGE construction of Baha Mar is happening right next door - expect construction 24 hours a day (I was at the Sheraton for a wedding and had family in the Wyndham - so I saw several rooms in different towers).

Capriccio (Italian) has an amazing grouper dish - grouper capri. Owner is Manny and I love him. I try and eat there one a month (I travel to the Bahamas for work). It is under a mile walk.

In the strip mall next to Capriccio is Olives- tapas - also great

In Atlantis- Mesa (Bobby Flay) restaurant - quite yummy

Greycliff gets a lot of buzz - not my favorite - but nice wine and cigars.

Be very careful there! We went several years ago (when finances were better) and it was beautiful. A week or so ago I actually saw a couple of articles on how dangerous it now is (here's one from last month). The crime rate has skyrocketed, murders are becoming common and they target tourists. The cruise ships are starting to advise passengers not to get off the ship, and they're considering not stopping there anymore.

I totally agree with this. We were just there a few weeks ago and DH and I decided to take a self guided walking tour. We walked to the Queens Staircase which was BEAUTIFUL, but did NOT feel safe walking around. We only saw two other people walking so word must be out that it is no longer a good idea to be off on your own. We just went back to the shops where it was fairly busy and then back to the ship. It was our third time there and things were definitely different this last time.

This is good to know! I told DH and DD17 that I am staying on the ship while in Nassau during our Disney cruise this Summer - they thought I was
over-reacting. I said Nassau has nothing to offer me and I'd rather not worry about making it back to the ship on-time! The crime rate confirms it.

I would certainly be careful wandering around at night. However, we have been to Nassau many times. My friend was just there a few weeks ago and stayed at the Sheraton next door. They had a wonderful time just swimming, sunbathing, and going out to dinner. Be careful, but don't be too afraid to enjoy yourself. The daiquiri hut for happy hour is a must, BTW!

John Watlings Distillery is very nice. You can walk around the grounds (it's not very big). They offer free samples of their rum, and they make really good drinks in the bar! I think it's fairly new.

I can't find his business card, but Tommy Bahama was fantastic. He kept hagglers away, safe in a group of 6 or so of us at $20 a piece. We went to the rum cake factory, staircase, restroom stop, market and to the beach if you chose. He had a van and we found him under the canaopy near town, just off the dock.

I noticed this year that there is not a stop at Nassua, but one the Grand Island. This is Norwegian cruise line.

The island is depressed, no running water, pipes with a faucet are set up foe the community use, the homes are shacks and shanty's with little cover to them. School kiddos looked so cute, but everywhere you went were undercover cars and PD with problems on their hands.

I loved that Tommy fielded us safely to see great sites we would not have seen on our own.
Oh, that included in the mist of dis pair a HUGE magnificent building in town, a bank. A bank built and owned by Mitt Romney.

I've been there 4 times- we actually stayed there once-never again and the other times were on a cruise, we got off one time the rest of the time we stayed onboard. There is really nothing there worth risking getting off the ship for. Its one of the few places we have visited that I did not feel safe.

We were just there on Wednesday. There were several cruise ships in port and lots of people around. We didn't feel unsafe at all.

We (DH, DS12, DS14, and my parents) walked to Junkanoo Beach and spent a few hours. Then we walked to the "fish fry" area and had dinner. We ate the most delicious whole fried fish!!!!! When we were finished, we took a taxi back to the ship.

We had a great day!

Ok, I must be in the minority here because I love the bahamas. I've been several times and stayed at Atlantis and the Riu Palace.

Great reef shark diving if you do that. They also offer snuba/snorkeling. I want to say it's blue island divers is the outfit. One of the best I've ever used.

The fish fry is great. Twin Brothers has some amazingly fresh fish. It was cheaper than the Atlantis resorts but not what most would consider cheap. Walked from downtown market area and didn't feel unsafe at all.

It's an island so everything is imported and it's main source of income is tourism. Even the places the locals go aren't "cheap"
