names you HATE

I don't like the names:

Kevin
Christopher
Michael
Bruce

Christopher and Michael are way to overused in my opinion. Kevin and Bruce I have no explanation for. Of course I think many people dislike my son's name - Nolan. (Which I obviously love)

Was Nolan Ryan a bad baseball player? I like Nolan.

I don't really dislike this, but I don't understand why people name their kids after themselves. This is pretty common with men (jr., II, III etc.) but I also know several women with daughters with the same first name. Why?? I find it really confusing when I call these people's houses. How do I identify the person I want? With a man, I could just say "Could I speak to Ben Jr.?", but with a woman, what do I say? I usually just say "Can I please speak to Melissa?" and then wait for the other person to figure out who I want!! Because really, what do I say? "Can I speak to Melissa, the mom?" or "Can I speak to the older Melissa?" There is no easy way!!

Why not give your child his/her own name?? I was named after my grandmother and it was always very confusing at family gatherings to figure out who they wanted when the name was called out! And that was only a few times a year. I can't imagine living like that every day! Bad enough that my brother's name rhymed with mine, so unless you clearly heard the first letter, again, CONFUSION!!

Ok two names I don't like are: Damien, or and I can't think of it off the top of my head, I'm experiencing a tip of the tongue phenomena, the bad kid from the Children of the Corn... starts with an M.

Actually Nolan Ryan was one of the best pitchers ever.

There are some names that I don't like but I guess that I'll pass on this question. I'm too afraid that someone will have their feelings hurt. :confused3

I thought Nolan Ryan was a good player. But I haven't followed baseball since I was in high school and I don't remember much before I went to college.

I think its very nice of you to not want to post the names you don't like.

I have to be honest. I named my son Aiden because of you. I thought it was a beautiful name and it always stuck with me. I looked up the meaning and boy does it fit him too....Aiden means fiery!

I don't understand people who name their kids made-up looking names with lots of letters or hard to pronounce. But who am I to judge, both of my kids names are spelled wrong as is our last name!

Although I'm not a parent, I really wanted to duck in and say I think Aiden is a beautiful name too - I love it! *ducks out again*

Hey thanks for your instructions. I read the post v-e-r-y-c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y and know what? I still don't like the name Hunter. Perhaps you can provide me the acceptable wording of my opinion and then I will re-phrase it to your liking. Promise. Or perhaps it is just unacceptable altogether to dislike the name Hunter. Is it okay to dislike any name, or just Hunter?

Anyway, good night & good luck

HEY!!! :furious:

Kidding! Had to do it! I've been living with Lauri too long (btw, a male name on a female for those that hate that ;) Laurie originated as a nickname to Lawrence )

Doesn't bother me one bit if someone doesn't like my name. In fact, I've hated my name at times. Usually right in the middle of a lecture after I've been caught doing something I shouldn't have.. or not doing something I should have. :smooth:

Now if you add my middle name (which btw nobody has hated yet. :woohoo: of course, it's not your run of the mill middle name) and put my last name after it and say it in my Mom's angry voice.. YIKES! :scared1:

Are you sure he didn't say Calpernia? That's an old name. In fact, it's the name of the maid/nanny in my favorite book To Kill A Mockingbird.

Oops... maybe that is what he said... I thought it was Cowpernia for 48 years! :rotfl:

I have two dogs with "people" names but I won't say what they are.

I also have a son "Kevin" but I'm not offended if someone else doesn't like it. I do and he does so we're ok! Everythings good!

There was a family in my home town, 3 girls whose names were... (ready?)

Mynthia, Nor'Ali and Leoni! Glad my parents didn't do that to me. Oh, my mom went to school with a girl named Morna, poor girl.

My grandma's name was Leonie. I used to feel for her but after a while it sounds so pretty. Lee-a-knee is how it was pronounced.

This girl's name was pronounced Lee-O-nee, like Tea Leoni only it was her first name.

And on the topic of Grandmother's names. My grandma's name was Evelyn (which I think is a nice name.) It was pronounced Ev-Lynn, I think that's pretty common. At her funeral the minister kept calling her EVE-lynn. It was already upset and this sent me into a frenzy! Has anyone heard of pronouncing Evelyn as EVE-lynn on purpose?

My son named our Golden George and it is a girl. He was four when we got her and his Grandpa used to tease him and call him George for fun, so, when we got the dog we said what should we name her and he said "George" and we said it's a girl and he being four said "so?" He really wanted to name her George and was pretty upset that we had said he could name the dog and now we were saying he couldn't. Well, we settled on Georgie, which he was fine with because he had a girl in his pre-school class named Georgie, OOPS! but we changed it to Jorgee so it wasn't exactly the same! Sometimes we call her Jorge :rotfl:

My Grandmother was named Lorraine May, I always wanted to use the name May (middle) for my daughter (which I never had) My sisters middle name is Lorraine and her daughters middle name is Lorraine wich I think is great! My Mom however doesn't care for her middle name and said no one could name their daughter her middle name Belle and now look at how popular it has become! LOL

OK, just sharing.

Well out of all the names listed so far only one of my four boys have shown up so that's not too bad. ;)

The offensive name was Christopher. But to add insult to injury we spell it Christofer.

(disclaimer: the above referenece to it being offensive was said in jest, please do not jump on me. :teeth: )

BTW my dogs name was Jake. I have a cat named Milton. I also have a Daisy and Dixie. They make cute kitten names.

What about the weirdos that name their poor innocent babies after plants?

Signed,

Ivy

J/K. I love my name. I even carried on the nature-related naming tradition. My son's name is Reed. :lmao:

However, if I had a dollar for every time someone has called me "Poison Ivy", or "Ivy League"...well, let's just say I'd be going to WDW a lot more often! Do they really think I haven't heard those jokes a bazillion times?

My son's name is Christopher Michael, a double whammy. I picked out his name when I was nine. I always knew I would have a son named Christopher Michael. It makes me :goodvibes

As for those who hate popular names with wierd spellings, take mine: it's pronounced 'Carol' and it's an old European name. It's been in my family for years. My parents didn't just come up with it out of the blue.

So when you're judging a name, remember that it could be actually an 'old spelling' and could have sentimental meaning.

Yeah, my name's a pain because people are lazy and don't read the whole thing, assuming that it's Karen. But it makes signing up for things easy - I never have to add my last initial or last name.

I was telling DH about this thread (and the others like it) and he said that when he was in school there was a girl with a very strange name. One day a substitute teacher was calling roll and said the girls name. Then, the teacher asked if her parents hated her.

I'd post the name, but I can't even begin to spell it.

CanBeGrumpy, I agree. That's why I like unqiue names.

My dad, stepdad, uncle and a cousin are all named Tony.
My DH, his uncle, and cousin are all named Michael (DH's sister is Michelle).
My cousin had two husbands named Rick.

About 3 weeks ago we were at the park and there was a very pretty little girl there named Sophie. And I just knew without a doubt one of my 5 year olds would say. that our dogs name was Sophie. Sure enough before I had even processed the thought. I hear my son. Hey we have a dog named Sophie. The lady was kind and she said oh how nice. and they talked about the type of dog she was. I apologized and she seemed ok.

a few minutes later she starts calling her son, Oh Sam.. Sam, I wanted to run and hide. of course our bunny is named Sam. And of course my son points out this fact. Still she laughs..I say well clearly we have the same taste in names... They are very pretty names. My son says to her we also have a cat named Sunny? do you have one of those? Nope, a cat named Sonic? Got one of those. Nope...

A few minutes go by he says we have fishies too... She says really whats there names? I say Mr And Mrs, Goldberg. ( get it goldfish goldberg) any guess as to her name????Goldstein.

She laughed again, but I think by this time she was not particualrly amused)

That is by the way a true story. :rotfl2:

Were you crying when you left the park??? :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

That is the funniest thing I've read all day. Kids can be so funny and they don't even realize what they are saying. Love it.
