I LOVE the name Hunter and some other less common names, like Keaton (especially) and Parker that another poster mentioned. Hunter is a dog's name??? It's not like naming a kid "Rover" or "Spot". Sheesh.

Our next door neighbor used to have a dog named Tara and a goat named Sarah.

My niece and her DH had a terrible time naming their kids...one a teacher, one a principal, and so many names reminded them of kids they were less than fond of.

I have a tough time liking Cody and Cassidy, since the mere thought of Kathie Lee Gifford makes me gag.

I do have one name in which any variation of the name I just can't stand. But of course I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings

My only complaint about naming tactics, coming from someone with a very common last name, is that there are so many girls being named masculine names.

We had fun coming up with girl names. But it was very difficult to come up with a strong, respectful name for our son that:

(A)Didn't already have 15 listings in the phone book with the same name. No kidding, my poor DH is one of 15 in our small town phone book.

(B)Didn't have a weird spelling or strong association (half the pro athletes would have the same name)

(C)Wasn't already used by 500 girls for the sake of being trendy or feminist.

Of course people are going to name their kids whatever, despite what it does to other people.

We finally settled for a name that has a slight association that has already been forgotten, and a few girls have.

So it is just a name. Unless you personally invented the names Madison or Hunter, I don't see why you should be offended that I don't like them. It is just a simple matter of taste.

I don't think anyone was offended by the simple fact that you don't like a name. We (or at least, I) just thought you went beyond stating your opinion.

It's one thing to say "I know a lot of dogs named Hunter, so I think of it as a dog's name", and another completely to say "Sorry, this is a dog's name whether you believe it or not" (bolding mine). As if your opinion is the "truth", and people who disagree are "wrong".

But don't apologize to me, I don't have a Hunter, although I do like the name.

Am I the only one who thinks most of the trendy names are very pretty? I love most of the names listed. I also really like traditional names, but chose not to name my son something traditional because our last name is so "generic".

I do sometimes wonder what the heck people are thinking when they name a child something like Apple or His Royal Majesty, but I can't think of any I really hate.

I don't understand people who name their kids made-up looking names with lots of letters or hard to pronounce. But who am I to judge, both of my kids names are spelled wrong as is our last name!

Well, in my case, I named my first son the name of two former students..............both were very nice kids, and I'd never heard of a difficult one with the name.

That may be why I like the more traditional names.........in my school we get way more trendy than traditional.........and the traditional names chosen are sure to be in the top ten, so straying down to 12 and below is pretty good for us!

My mom is a retired teacher. We had to run our baby name list through her to make sure the names didn't remind her of the "more difficult to deal with" students and bring back bad memories.

She said it really didn't matter to her what the grandkids names were, but you know that power of association! We didn't want to start off with any favoritism issues (or lack of).

I would like to add one thing. We enjoyed looking at the name definitions in those baby name books. Even though it really doesn't matter to some people, it does make a difference in someone's head when they see their name attached to a definition.
Once we were doing an activity in which students were making a project about their names, and what the meanings were.
We looked up the definitions and provided them with the names to the students. They all thought it was pretty cool!
However, we ran across an issue with one name. A girl in class had a name that meant "lame, or crippled"
It was the only name with a definition that wasn't strong or royal or powerful like the others, but with the parent's permission, we told her her name meant "lovely". After all, it is the name of a popular and pretty super model.

So folks don't like Madison huh? Well, I won't tell my 7 year old that. I don't think she'd care anyway. When we picked out her name we were looking for a unique name but one that also had meaning to us. Madison is of old english origin and so is my family. I had never even seen "Splash" so I didn't take it from there. I certainly can understand why someone might think I did but I didn't.

Our youngest dd is named Teagan. We were looking for another unique and meaninful name. Well, Teagan is Irish and so is my dh's family so we went with it. I love it. It sounds like a girls name to me but the only other Teagans I have ever met are boys.

I don't hate any names but I certainly don't get the ones that are spelled weird. Your just setting your child up for a life of "Can you spell that for me please?"

I won't say I "hate" them, but the whole Aiden/Caden/Hayden/Braden/Jaden thing gets to me in a bad way. It's like someone took "Aiden" and just started adding every letter of the alphabet to it.

I used to tease the girls that I wanted to name them Fluffinella - because their daddy wouldn't let me name the cat Fluffinella - but he wouldn't let name them it either, even when I promised to just call them Ella for short.

My DH thinks he's paying you a big compliment if he names his dog after you. So, that's the way I'll sorta look at it.

My daughters name is Jasmine and if someone I knew wanted to name their dog Jasmine I would find it kinda cool. Many may think that is wierd but I'm a huge dog lover so I would in no way think of it as an insult. If someone really loves a name, go ahead and give it to the new addition to your family - person or pet. BTW - I have always liked Nicki; it's a great name for either a puppy or a little girl. My dogs name is Sadie and I told my daughter if she ever has a little girl of her own, she could name her Sadie. She completely thought I was nuts.

You see my son's name is Hunter. And no, "it's not just a name", as you stated. Did you pick the name Skywalker because it's "just a name"? No, I'm sure it has some meaning to you, that's why you chose it.

In the future may I suggest you choose your words and/or phrasing more carefully. As I have so carefully choosen mine.

My DH's first lab was Hank (after some famouse TV fisher). This one is names Doc. A good friend of his is Dr. Al. Al sounds too much like "owl" so I talked him into naming the dog "Doc" instead of Al. Little did he know I was sneaking some Disney in there (from Snow White!)

Nicki got her name from Nichole, a girl from our local college whom I "adopted" and loved while she was going to school here and away from her home in GA. I am not sure Nichole was flattered but, oh well!

A friend of mine has a DD named Sadie. Actually her name is Sara Helen and they call her Sadie (named after 2 grandmothers).
I think I have always been "weird" with my naming...not only do I have a DD named Hunter but I had a girl dog named George. Hmm. I never thought about it before.

Honestly, I am used to people being mixed about DD's name. When I was pregnant and asked by my ILs what names we were thinking off, we said Hunter and my MIL said, "Well, maybe you'll change your mind."
And there were a few nutty comments like, "Will your next one be named "Fisher"? (DH used to hunt and fish.) As long as I like it and DD is happy with it, that is all that really matters.
