Names on deeds and blue card benefits

We currently have SSR resale with my husband and I listed on the deed. We have two kids at home, ages 19 and 16. If we bought a 100 point direct contract, and put my husband and I AND the two kids on the new direct contract, would that lock us all in on the blue card for now and them in the future, even when they no longer live with us? And to add to that question, if we bought TWO 100 point direct contracts, putting all four names on the two deeds, thinking they'd eventually each have a contract with their home address on the account, would that also secure benefits for their future families? I'm trying to think ahead on the best way to add points and deed them in other to give benefits for them and potentially their families. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

My understanding is yes, though you couldn't put your 16 year old on the contract until they are 18. You can always add them later.

However, if you keep just your husband and you on the first contract, but all four on the others, I think you'd end up with two membership numbers.

Absolutely correct. The contracts that are differently deeded could not be seamlessly used together.

I have a question somewhat related to this. My plan was to do the same thing buy SSR or AKL resale to get in to DVC as cheap as possible then buy direct down the road. Would I still have only one member number if I added a direct contract to an existing resale contract? Provided the Use Years and those on the two contracts are the same?

All contracts must have same UY and be titled EXACTLY the same to be under one membership. There are threads on here discussing why you may want to have your contracts as one membership, but some might not mind 2. Just FYI.

Buying a direct contract of 100 points would give whoever's name is on the deed direct benefits regardless of where they live.

Future benefits and limits on things like APs are not guaranteed. (If everyone starts adding all their family members and households to buy 30+ APs on a 100 point or less contract, it's likely rules will change.)

Putting my kids on 1 small contract for now is a risk I'm ok with and solves the problem of getting AP discounts as they move out.
Our intention is to essentially buy our kids / their families DVC memberships.

My slight hesitation comes in when thinking about them sharing a membership when I'm gone and they have their own lives and each childs circumstances may be different. Basically, I'm not worried about the risk for myself but rather when they have to manage it themselves. So, we aren't moving too fast and have a plan to add on and possibly sell off as we see fit.

The glitch is breaking things apart (deeding differently) makes using the points together for 1 trip a bit more difficult. Otherwise, I'd deed everything differently. For example have my small direct contract as all of us, then buy more points on a deed with one daughter, and 1 with the other daughter. But that is too many memberships for me.

Basically, there are a lot of things to consider when adding your kids to your deeds. I'm sure others will jump in.

As long as they live with you. When they turn 18, they will need to provide proof that they share your address - such as a driver's license with the same address, or a utility bill in their name with the same address.

As long as they are in the same house. Easily policed. It is based on legal address, and a limit on number of APs you can purchase per year.

My estate lawyer said that I needed to consider what would happen if my daughter got married and then divorced, how that would potentially impact it. Anyone else take that into consideration?

Yep, there is ~ a 50% change that will happen.

Their name on the deed makes it an asset. So anywhere you child's assets come into play, like a college loan, divorce, etc, it comes into play.

We have all three of our adult daughters on our deeds. And yes, one got divorced and luckily the dummy never thought to ask, but I had figured out the one contract we bought while they were married and divided the points by 5 people, then that five divided by two, to get an idea of what we may be looking at...not sure if that would be how it would’ve played out...but we were prepared if he asked.

As for estate planning, the girls have figured out which of the main three contracts each of them wants, and we purchased a small 50 point direct for RR and planned on buying the same at reflections (hopefully will still happen down the road) for the grandkids.

We paid, they can work it out when we’re gone.

The benefit they can get living with you is the AP discount. They would not get a blue card for discounts.

I just added my adult kids to my membership last fall, I wanted RiV with all their names, but needed to add them to my SSR contract first so the new one could be part of the same membership.

Now all of them have actual blue cards and don’t need me there for discounts. One DD is a CM for Disney Theater so she has free admission and better discounts for now...but if she ever leaves the company, at least she continues to get DVC owner perks.
