A Facebook friend posted this on her wall tonight and doesn't know what type it is. I've never seen an insect like this before - we think it's a spider, but we have no firm ideas. Can someone tell me what it is?

Oh, and if it helps, we're in Ohio.

Arrow-Shaped Spider
The Arrow-shaped Micrathena is an orb web spider. It has an abdomen that looks like an arrow. The female spider also has pointed spines on the abdomen. The spines help protect it. Arrow spiders can be very colorful spiders, like this red and yellow one. They are found in woods and gardens.

Thanks! it's a great picture, a lovely looking spider, but I'd be horrified to find it anywhere near me!

It looks like someone melted cheese on it.

I thougth it was a grilled Cheese spider too. lol.
Yes, I did think of the touch cheese too, I had to watch that movie 6 times this month while watching my neice and nephew.

Yeah, it does! My aunt posted the picture, saying she thought it looked like the spider was carrying around a fried egg on it's back. All I can say is Neat! and YUCK! :)

Oh, and I'm near Dayton, but I'm not sure where my aunt's friend lives (the person that took the picture). Actually, someone else posted that she had one at her house, too, so apparently they're more common than I'd like! :)
