"Name, just as it's shown on your passport"

Fun fact, I have no middle name.

I was born with a different first name, Daniel as my middle name, and a different last name. I was named after my biological father who went, well let's just say away. My mom, instead of picking a new first name for me, simply made my middle name my first name and gave me no middle name. My last name was later changed when I was 2ish when my stepfather adopted me. (tomorrow on jerry Springer, LOL)

So pretty much every time I fill out an official document, I have to explain I have no middle name. Thanks mom!!

Is a middle name that expected in the US? Like I said before, I have 3 names, as has one of my sisters, the other has 2, but my dad only has 1, a friend of mine has 4. There is no set length of names here

Pretty much everyone I know has at least 3 names.

Living in South Florida, I know a lot of Hispanic folks here with multiple hyphenated surnames as is custom in a lot of Spanish speaking countries.

My husband once had an issue at an airport with the fact that his flight information was under his first and last name and his driver's license included his middle initial. Ever since then I have been super strict about making sure names always match ID.

We have an odd situation. My husband never uses his first legal name, has always gone by his middle name.

Also, my MIL gave my husband HER maiden name at birth to use as his last name and his father's last name after his middle name! So, to clarify, my always husband refers to himself as "middle name & mother's maiden name"... sigh.... Legally it's: first legal name, middle name, FIL's last name and MIL's maiden name. Born in Anchorage to both Caucasian (married) parents -- so quite not the norm. I don't know if she was drugged up filling out his birth certificate or what, but ....

Off of the top of my head, I can't even tell you which name is on his social, but I do believe that it's first legal name, legal middle name and then MIL's maiden name.

That said, when we travel DCL he never has any issues with what is in the DCL system and what is on his passport vs what is on his birth certificate (which we always take).

My husband never has issues travelling and we've been all over.

The only issue that I've come across myself was trying to decide which last name to take -- his mother's maiden name, (which he goes by) or his dad's last name which SHOULD be his legal last name!

In my experience it's more common than I expected. In the military, it's not unusual to look down a roster to see more than a few 'NMN' (no middle name).

I think it's less a DCL issue and more of a Homeland Security issue. Cruise lines have to provide their passenger manifests to HS prior to sailing and they want to be able to more easily check names. It's the same reason that airlines insist that you provide names exactly as per your passport. My passport has my middle name, DH's has his middle initial. We have to always check that our tickets match that before we fly. When I fly domestic, my middle initial is sufficient but not once I cross the border or fly overseas. So whether it's an issue that it doesn't match exactly may or may not be a problem, but I don't think it's DCL who has the issue. I'd personally make it match just to avoid hassles; at the very least, make the first name match exactly without nicknames.

Well, at least that answer has some logic behind it, thanks. And considering we are Canadians and would have been logged as coming in to the country, I can see why they would want to know that we left... and were coming back again 7 days later.
