name change process in Massachusetts

Hello! I just got the copy of our completed marriage license last night, and wanted to start the name change process today, but I'm not sure where to start, etc. I figure it's with the Social Security office, but I honestly don't know for sure. I know I also need to go to the D.M.V. for my license. Is there anything I'm missing? Am I supposed to do one before the other? HELP!

I'm going through the same thing here in NC! It's a very long and time-consuming process, so I just do a little at a time--but that's also because I'm not only changing my name, but I've moved to a new state.

I think it's best to start with your SS card, because everyone wants to see that, like the DMV. The DMV also wanted to see my marriage license. I've found this checklist helpful...

Head to the Social Security office with a copy of your marriage certificate. After you have that done then head to the DMV.

Okay. I like the idea of GOING to the Social Security office w/the copy because on their website it also said I could mail it, but uh...I don't trust them and I don't want to go through the process of having to get another. It was hard enough to get the original for our officiant to sign!

Zip, if it makes you feel any better, I also need to change my address [but luckily...I guess...we are still here in MA (I want to be back in FL )].

I have noticed some of my credit cards didn't ask for any proof, but make sure you keep your marriage certificate handy, I know my bank requires a copy to change my name there as well.

That's awesome, contrats on your wedding as well!!

I actually felt a bit uneasy that my credit card company only needed an email from me saying I am now married.

I plan to get my SSN card and Drivers Liscense on Friday this week, so after that I should be able to get the rest of my things changed over. This is a lot of work, the guys get off easy, nothing for them to change. LOL

I'm actually "making" D.H. pay for my license change since I just had to renew it Dec. 1st and now I have to pay 1/2 that price all cuz of him! LOL.

That's funny, I had to renew mine in December too. We bought DH a new car and it is in my name because of the discount my dad gets, so I had to change my address and car registeration in December as well! I will suggest to DH that he pays for my license as well LMAO

I did SS first. IMHO that is the most important since that is how you are identified by the federal government. Then I went to DMV and changed my license. Borh need certified copies of your marriage license-that is federal standards no matter what state you live in. With certain credit cards, i was also very surprised that you could just tell them you changed your name and they send you a new card. A little nerve racking. I know my actual bank and the credit cards with that bank need a certified copy of my marriage certificate. I also left a few things in my maiden name for my own reasons. How many certified copies did you order from Broward County? I got 6 to be safe since certain places keep a copy. Hope this helps.
