personally, I think it is long overdue! I know some airports have them, but on GMA they are talking about putting more in place. Then there is the privacy issues. Again, I rather feel safer flying then caring about what is on a scanner!

your thoughts?

If it makes travelling safer and allows me to keep things like my iphone on board when I fly then I don't mind.

I have no problem with it. CNN recently featured an article on these scanners:

The system uses a pair of security officers. The one working the machine never sees the image, which appears on a computer screen behind closed doors elsewhere; and the remotely located officer who sees the image never sees the passenger.

As further protection, a passenger's face is blurred and the image as a whole "resembles a fuzzy negative," said TSA's Lee. The officers monitoring images aren't allowed to bring cameras, cell phones or any recording device into the room, and the computers have been programmed so they have "zero storage capability" and images are "automatically deleted," she added.

If they begin this type of scanning, I will no longer fly... far too invasive for the average traveller and way too much room for abuse.

Honestly, I'd rather someone see me "naked" than have my plane crash because someone was let on board with explosives.

yeah....that!

far too invasive, plus they(terrorists) would still find a way to get them on the plane

I think it's a good idea. I would have no problems with passing through a scanner like that at all. I hope they decide to implement it at every airport - I'd definitely feel safer flying.

I will admit that it is something I'm not comfortable with. We are an airline family, so we would continue flying, but I'm uncomfortable with the idea of someone looking at images of me or my daughters. I know about the safe-guards in place to protect privacy, and they do very little to ease my discomfort.

Maybe over time I'll feel better about the whole thing.

I think its a great idea! anything to make us safer is good.

Don't be surprised to see some of these images on the Internet. I think that it's a shame.

I think they're long overdue being brought in (I didn't realise until I read something just now that they've been trialling them since back in 2004), but unfortunately I can't see them being useful.

Why? Because as long as they are optional, or there are classes of people who are not allowed through them (last thing I read said that they were unsure of the legal position in the UK of under 18's walking through these scanners so were not allowing it until they could find out for sure), then there will still be loopholes for people.

Personally though - I have no objection to them if it means increasing the chances of catching somebody trying to blow up a plane and kill lots of people. I would rather people see parts of me that I would not normally publicly show (that are not exactly unique to me anyway - every male has what I have ;)), than have my or somebody else's plane blown up :thumbsup2

I will do anything to make sure my family and I are safe. I have nothing to hide and as far as someone seeing me naked vs dying in a plane crash, I will take naked everyday. I think about Sept 11 and then the 12th and all those people searching for their loved one in New York and I think there is no way I would allow my modesty to stand in the way of keeping our country safe.

No problem here. Bring it on. Hey, better than a strip search.

Don't understand the privacy issue. The images are look nothing like the person being scanned. You see a general outline of the person, not intimate details.

I think this has lots of potential except for slowing things down.

I don't have a problem with it, but I can understand why some people are uncomfortable with it. People have different comfort levels as far as modesty goes.
But I've got to say, after all the threads/articles I've read here, about all the extra security thats come in over the years, the limits on liquids, extra charge for bags so now everyone is trying to squeeze all their luggage in a carry on and finding space in the bin, can I bring a peanut butter sandwich on board for my fussy 10 year old?, and is a large guy going to be spilling over into my seat I really dread the thought of flying. Also, after watching a few episodes of that reality show about Southwest airline - you know the one where anytime they're over booked they find people who have had a drink in the airline bar to accuse of being drunk so they can bump them and make room - I've gotten to the point if I'm within a 24 hour drive, I'd rather just drive to my destination.
Road trips have become much more fun
