Mysterious deposit into my checking acct UPDATE p2

Just an idea: Do you have a cash back bonus on your mortgage? I totally forgot that I had that perk and the first year they deposited the 1% or 2% cash back (don't remember which), it took me a while to remember what it was for.

It could be a mistake. In which case, they will reverse the deposit.
THis. Most likely it's a mistake, and the bank WILL reverse it and take the money out of your account. If you spend it before that happens, you WILL owe them. So the best bet is to leave the money alone and let them reverse it when they realize the error.

Happened to me once, except it was $50,000. I figured it was a computer glitch and the money wasn't really there. After a couple of weeks I got a letter saying there was a mistaken deposit that had been reversed but they were letting me keep the interest. I didn't question them on that. Seems like it was about $80.

Reminds me of the Frasier episode when the ATM gave Martin too much money and the bank kept thinking he was shorted money!

UPDATE: it was a flex reimbursement. I signed up for direct deposit a few months ago and totally forgot. I knew I had submitted a flex claim, but I submitted over $200 in receipts so that was the amount I was watching for (though I was watching for a check in the mail). The reimbursement was for $194 because that was all the money I had left in the account.

But I am surprised the bank couldn't say, "this came from TASC (our flex spending program provider)".

They could. They chose not to.

I have never heard of that!
