Myrtle Beach, SC ???'s

Oh yeah....forgot this...if you love chocolate go to Greg Normans at Barefoot Landing for dessert. Order a chocolate souffle. It is as good as Palo but in a different way. Takes 20 minutes for them to make one but they are awesome. If you want to feel like you are on a disney cruise buy some of the coconut lime lotions for B&BW and put it on and eat a souffle from GN. lol
For some reason the smell of the coconut lime lotion from B&BW reminds me of the smell of a Disney Cruise Ship. It is heaven.

We're heading to Myrtle Beach in a week and are really nervous. We too are used to Disney style accomedations. We tried booking the Embassy but it was booked solid. So we searched and searched the internet two weeks ago and read several resort and hotel reviews on tripadvisor. It seems like many of the places were hit and miss. Even if it was highly praised someone always had the other stuff to say like "We were robbed!" or it was the filthiest room we have ever seen. So we finally settled on a resort and are hoping for the best. We picked the Compass Cove. If anyone is familiar with that one please give me aheads up. If it's bad please don't tell me unless mine or my family's life are in danger. (Too much money to think about that could have been spent at an upcoming Disney trip.)

I have seen Compass Cove and if I remember correctly it is in Myrtle Beach but not in the main part and busier area. If I am correct you should be well pleased with your choice.

I did go to their site to try and jog my memory of where the resort is located. If you see they just spend 8 million to refurb. That is nice.

I have stayed in some nasty rooms in very nice hotels and not just in MB. You can never judge what you will get. I am a clean freak. I have a little OCD. I take lysol and some other stuff to spray anything we might touch down. I also spray my bed. lol I do not want bed bug bites.

Myrtle Beach is a nice touristy area. It has nice hotels/resorts, some small rundown looking place and some family owned places. I have stayed at both. It is all what you are looking at and for.

I really can not think of any place in the area that is unsafe. I have stayed in South Myrtle, Main Myrtle, Restaruant area and North Myrtle. I have been going since a child, probably for 38 years now.

and for sending the PM. I did get a little "warm fuzzy" after you posted. We're excited about going and are really looking forward to the pools and lazy rivers. We just got back from Williamsburg and skipped Captain George's because I knew there was one at Myrtle Beach I told hubby we could wait. I notice that you don't really reccomend them though. We're a seafood loving family and live near many seafood places on the VA/MD line. (So the more to offer for the $$$ the better!) But if you know of any places that are better than George's please let me know. I've read that they have several buffets there.
Our first night we're staying at the LaQuinta at the Broadway area. (Free night from an online win last year)

hahah, great minds think alike. I bring the Lysol, Clorox Bathroom, Wipes you name it I've got it. You never know what you will get for example I was on a RCI cruise in March and our room was so nasty, the bathroom walls had urine stains on it and it smelled like urine too. I had to whip out my clorox and start spraying and using the wipes to clean it off. NASTY!!!!

I have heard that Cpt George's is the best buffet if you decide to do a buffet. I also believe they allow you to order from a menu.

We just love going down to Murrell's Inlet for seafood. I like the fact that it is fresh that day. You can do a search for seafood in Murrell's Inlet and find other places. I just can not speak for them. We are going to Nance's (as I mentioned in my pm) in MI next time we go down.

Use your time at LaQuinta to have fun at Broadway. Go early and eat cheap.

That is just gross. We have stayed in hotels that were like that. Thank goodness it was for only one night.

Which ship were you on? I hope you complained!! I would have called and asked for a different room or at the least made them clean it!! Nasty!!

As the original poster, I just wanted everyone to know where we stayed and some little details about the trip. We ended up staying at the Marriott Grand Dunes. I don't think that we could have picked a better hotel. It is beautiful. We actually thought about going back there for our vacation in 3 weeks. Heck, if I could find cheap flights, I just will end up there instead of DC :lmao: .

We did have a couple slight issues, but they were fixed as promptly as they could be. (The main pool was actually "green" when we got there and we thought that it was a sea water pool :confused3 , well after a day of the hotel trying to fix it with chemicals and such, they determined that a guest actually pulled up the caulking in the expansion joints to the pool and sea water was coming up through the cracks. They tried to fix this with the pool still filled, but it didn't work, so they ended up draining the pool, fixing it and re-filling it up. A child also ended up getting sick in the pool due to the fact that he drank the water?? All in all, the hotel had the problem fixed within 48 hours and it was nice knowing that it was probably the cleanest pool in Myrtle Beach as while it was drained they also power washed it and disinfected it). The hotel itself was very nice about it.

The only other problem that we had was with housekeeping. They didn't show up by 4:45pm, so I called the front desk and they sent someone up and the next day the same thing. We also did not get a paper 2 days in a row. Really, not huge problems.

The hotel provided fresh apples and cold water in the morning for walkers/runners on the beach (this was taken away about 9:30am or so). They had lemonade in the lobby in the afternoon.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone (if you can afford it, it was not cheap). We did walk up and down the beach and we also took a ride down (I believe Ocean Blvd) to see the other hotels. In my opinion the Marriott was the best of them all (for our needs/wants) on a vacation.

I've been staying at the Dayton House since I was a kid back in the late 1960's and you won't find better people than the Thomas' that own the Dayton House; it's a great place to take your family and you're close to Broadway at the Beach and tons of other activities. The Marriot Grand Dunes is nice too but it's a convention center motel so it's not as family friendly.

My best friend just got back and they stayed at Island Vista. They have 2 year old, and said it was great. islandvista.com
