So my dilema is this: DH is having some back surgery 3/19, so we are hoping that he will be able to take some time in April for a much needed vacation. We need to be home for Easter, so thinking of going to MB after April 12th. and staying for about 10 days. We need to get away for some R&R so thinking of the North MB area. My concern is, is this college break time? Will we regret going at this time? We can try to string some days together in May, but concerned it will be too hot by then. So what do you think? I can't afford to mess this vaca up. We don't have the time or the money to waste. TIA

Hope I don't sound like I'm raining on your parade, but as a person whose spouse has had more than 1 back surgery, don't be surprised if your DH isn't ready to travel by April 10th. All patients are different, though. The other thing is, the ocean water will still be a little chilly then, at that location. We love Holden Beach, which is right up the coast about 30 miles from MB, and the April temps are too cold for us!

Around here in Indiana, most schools are out in late March, and the 1st week of April for spring break, but I don't know if that's the norm, or not, nationally.

Whenever you do get to go, have a blast!

We are about 4 hours from MB. April will a nice time to go. After Easter, you should have no spring break issues as they are all over and you are about a month away from college graduation and two months from HS graduation. Weather can still be cool but there are so many things to do away from the beach. Almost everywhere has indoor pools, shopping is great at the huge outlets, broadway by the beach is much like DTD, and there are night shows to suit any taste.

We tend to go more in fall but have been all times of the year. We were just discussing today that we need to take a few day trip to the beach!

Jana49- Thanks. Doc said DH should be back to work in less than 2 weeks. He'll only be in the hospital overnight. So we are crossing our fingers that a month should be enough time for him to be able to travel. No too concerned with water temp. Just want to walk the beach and relax so we really want to avoid the college spring break crowds.

MSSANDRA- Thanks for the info. If you can recommend a clean, quiet, safe place with a kitchen that would be great. Looking at the North MB area.

North Myrtle Beach in April can be beautiful but cool at night. Our second home is there and we have gone many times in April. The water will be really cold, sorry.

This Myrtle Beach message board is run by great people and everything you need to know about MB will be answered kindly and quickly there. http://www.funbeaches.com/forum/

Tell them Emmy sen you ;)

We go to Myrtle Beach every year and we really like staying at Seawatch Resort in North Myrtle. It is close to a walmart, restaurants, shopping, barefoot landing, and very easy to hit the highway and 10 min down to Braodway at the beach. www.seawatchresort.com

Check it out.

Sorry, I can't help with NMB places to stay. I live on the southern end of the Grand Strand, Litchfield-Pawleys area. I can, however, say that mid-April to mid-May are great weeks to visit. Water temp is now in 60's, so if you are a hardy sort you may be able to get in. We are in midst of Can-Am days and there are lots of Canadians enjoying the beach and the water. Google "Coastal Uncorked Myrtle Beach" and you will find info about our food and wine festival happening the end of April. Great fun and lots of venues to choose from. Also, don't forget Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park, check out their websites for any special events. They are on the southend of the beach, my area, but you won't regret a day trip. If you like the shows, Alabama Theatre, Carolina Opry and Pirate's Voyage are on the north end. The boardwalk in downtown MB area is great and you can ride the sky wheel and see all over the area. No, I am not with the chamber of commerce, just someone who has lived here my entire life and really love my hometown. I could go on and on, Ripley's Aquarium, Wonderworks, Broadway at the Beach, the list is almost endless.

Go go go go . . . both times we've gone was during April vacation and not only is the weather AWESOME, but there's so much to do. We've never had a problem with crowds.

That being said, I think the Southern end tends to be the more busy end. We always stay in NMB. We typically rent a 3 b/r condo and split it with a few other folks. We cook there to save money, we do our laundry there - it's like being at home, but with perks.

Thanks all. Of course we need to make last minute plans so I appreciate all the info. Can always count on the DIS for help and great information.

Hi! We like to stay at Beach Cove in N. Myrtle Beach, but ocean will be very cold in April! We have gone over Memorial Day weekend and water still be chilly! We much prefer late June or July (not over the 4th though)!:rotfl:

In NMB we like Ocean Creek. It is very close to Bear Foot Landing where there is plenty of fun shopping and shows.

There will not be colleges on Spring Break during that time. However, my daughter attends public school in NC and she is on Spring Break during Easter week... Apr.9-13.

FYI- Although not as big as it once was: Spring Rally (Bike Week) is in May.

The ocean will be cold but most of the pools are heated and many properties have indoor pools, hot tubs, and lazy rivers.

If you have kids, I suggest Dunes Village. We've stayed there many times. There are indoor waterslides, pools, etc. if the weather doesn't cooperate. The rooms are clean and the parking deck is gated.

Have fun!

Thank you all for the info. Hopefully DH is well enough to go - we both could use some R&R.

If crowds are your main concern, late April will be a good time to visit.

College spring breaks are mid-way through their semester (so during your timeframe, they'll be gearing up for exams).
Myrtle Beach hosts a couple big groups in May, but you'll be long gone by then.
High school seniors will arrive en masse the first couple weeks of June.

After Easter but before Memorial Day, prices will be low.

Now for the negative: The air'll be comfortable during the day -- you'll be able to wear shorts -- but the water will be too cold for anything more than a quick ankle-wetting. Since we've had such a warm winter, this might be a little better than most years.

Just got back - I was there for the big car show this past week-end. There are spring breakers there now but lots of vacancy signs. Most of us (public schools) have Easter break April 6 - 15. Alot of places switch out on Saturday if you are looking for condos. My Dad takes a large group of senoir golfers to Long Bay in NMB. They have gone for over 15 years and are always pleased - my Dad is picky and looks for reasonable costs. There are even suites which is what he gets because my Mom goes to. Cuts down on eating expenses. It was warm during the day but the wind makes it cool at times.

I'm so glad you mentioned this as we just booked Dunes Village for mid May! We have a 1 year old so I'm hoping the indoor kiddie pools will keep her happy as I don't want to take her out into the sun too much :)

Oh you're really making me want another trip. Its been too long and we really loved it there.

*Broadway at the Beach* reminds us of Downtown Disney so much. And *Bearfoot Landing* is sweet! Love the shops! And the kids (and us ;) ) love walking over the water on those super long and cool foot bridges (what are they called?) and feeding the carp. And the cute ducks, too fun.

We had some of our best seafood dinners ever there, wish I could remember the names of the restaurants. Not the all-you-can-eat places but those are available too. Well, *everything* is available, just depends on what you want.

Wah wah wah I want to go back!!! :rolleyes1

I'd pick someplace less developed, like TopSail Beach, NC. That week IS our Spring Break. It's the week after Easter and lots of schools in Ohio are out that week.
