my washing machine is leaking!

So I'm sitting upstairs feeding DD and I hear a horrible squeaking! I run downstairs to the washing machine and open the lid. Everything looks ok but so noisy! I noticed that there is water on the floor around it. I turned the valves to the water off and tried to do the spin cycle but now nothing works at all. It makes a dull noise like it's trying to do something but nothing! any tips or suggestions or should I call a repair person that will cost me a bajillion dollars...

top load and about 2-3 years old

Unless you have someone handy in the household I think you'll be calling a repair person.

Edited to add: if you are trying to run it with the valves off, it might not work. Were they dripping water a lot and you had to turn it off?

One other thing to check. The hoses that come with washers don't hold up too well and after 2-3 years they may be failing. Is there water on the back of the machine around the hoses? Feel around the connections for wetness. If there is any, you should replace the hoses with metal braided hoses. They are burst resistant. It doesn't sound like this will be the full problem.

Nobody handy here - just me, a newborn, and a computer geek husband

DH had me turn off the valves so no more water would leak. I tried running the spin cycle both before and after the valves were turned off.

Too bad newborns have poor dexterity and can't use tools.
