It won't agitate, although you can hear it running. Does anyone know if this is fixable? The washer is at least 30 years old and the best appliance I have ever owned. I bought it almost 8 years ago for less than $40 so if it is dead I got my money's worth.

I just hate to give it up. :(

Wow! That's one heck of a run for a washer Lisa!! Sorry it died but you definitely got your money's worth out of that one!!

You may want to arrange for proper burial. It has served you well.....:D

It could just be a broken belt, don't give up hope just yet :)

Lisa , it could be the belt but by the time someone can come out to look at it and fix it , it will cost you probably $100.
Check into getting a new one, it may not cost that much more than the repair.
Good luck!!

This just reminded me of something I did a couple of years ago. We had some flooding in the basement and my old washer and dryer were both killed on that flooding. I saved them in the basement and bought two exact ones that will use the same parts if they ever break down, dh is handy at that and he can use the spare parts ( except for the motors of course ). Call me nuts!

I can feel your pain. My washer that I bought used for $25 died a couple of month's ago. We had it for 5 years and the person that I bought it from had it for about 20 years.

One of the reasons I hate to buy a new washer is that I'm afraid it won't be made as well. I have a cast iron tub and an up/down aggitator, which I have seen on some higher priced models recently. I would like a larger capacity tub though.

I'll have to see if I know any handy people that may be able to fix it for me. Anyone here replaced a belt? If it's not too hard I could even do it myself. I have a tool belt. ;)

as for the replaing of the belt, DH has done it.. not that hard to do.

Well it must be a virus. My washing machine died two days ago, the agitator stripped from the main spindle. My machine is 7 years old and we've decided it's not worth spending $100-150 to replace the agitator.

bobcat, the biggest problem you're going to have, is to find replacement parts. With the machine being 30 years old, I doubt you'll find any. We're having a hard time find them for a 7 year old machine.

I think you need to give it a proper burial.

Curious - what brand was (ummmm, IS) your washer? I just got rid of my Maytags that were easily 20 years old recently. I replaced them with Maytag Neptunes and couldn't be happier. Yes, I get happy about appliances! :)

Dan that's a cool site! I'll take a look at it this weekend and see if it helps.

Melrosegirl my washer is a Frigidare. Disn't even know they made washers at one time. I would love to have a Neptune but the cost is prohibitive right now. That's why I am hoping to get a little more use out of mine.

Parts are an issue so I may not even be able to repair it. I'm sure going to try though. I hate buying appliances. I always have a heck of a time finding what I want, and then when I do the real nightmare starts. Delivery is a pain in the @@@. Let's just say I won't ever go back to Sears and the delivery people are probably still talking about me.

My appliances seem to always die in January:rolleyes: Good luck with your washer!
