My Travel looking shaky

What does all the current speculation over MyTravel mean to those of us who have booked with them for next summer. We have a flight only to Orlando booked for next July, but the company may well go bust long before that, from what I've seen on TV. How safe are our seats? Would any demise simply mean a name change for the company and business as usual?

Help - I'm getting nervous!!!

What's all this about MyTravel? We're booked with Direct Holidays for Oct this year. They're part of MyTravel, aren't they?

We're actually going with Direct Holidays on a MyTravel plane, but it's all the same. Apparently they need a major financial restructuring package because of their debts. Seemingly everyone's money's safe because they're bonded, but I'm not bothered about the money. It's the flights I want, as they were about £800 cheaper than the next lowest and it would cost me a lot more to book now. I've already bought park tickets for the trip, so I don't want to lose anything on them.

We are booked on mytravel flights out of Gatwick on 14th January and so I rang our travel agent in a panic and asked if our flights were safe and they said yes they were - so am hoping that they are!

We went in May and I was nervous about booking flights with them 2 weeks before we went. Apparently they were safe then. Usually what happens is a company buys them out and yet another change of name. This happened with Sunworld - JMC - Thomas Cook holidays.

I would phone My Travel head office and explain what you have heard and what would happen on the worst case scenario. They may even just say the company name will change. I would not of thought the new company would want to lose bookings.

Then again I could be wrong. Give them a call and not the TA, they knew the holiday was going to be cancelled 6 weeks before they told us (Dominican Republic 1999 hurricane) the tour operator and the TA wanted to keep things quiet until they knew for sure. The reason I found this out, the TA walked off and I saw the notes on our file.

I am sure it will be fine. Just check.

My Travel have been on the verge of disaster for a couple of years now which is the only reason we have not flown with them again after our 2002 trip. The flight and service were excellent - easily as good in cattle class (which is all I can afford) as Virgin.

However I have just discovered that the trip we have booked to Menorca in October next year with Cosmos (with a little bit of help from £320 Tesco Club Card Deal Tokens), is actually using My Travel flights instead of Monarch as we are travelling from Stansted.

Worst case scenario if they did go bust is that you would lose the holiday but not the money. However when this happens you normally find that the other tour operators eg Thomson, First Choice, Thomas Cook etc will put on lots of extra flights and take over hotels etc. It is however a case of making a brand new booking.

When I first started in travel the then second largest operator in the Uk, Intasun went bust.

It was a case of filling in a lot of forms and then going onto the booking systems to find new holidays for people. Alternatively people would get a full refund from the Cival Aviation Authority.

I would't write My Travel off just yet though. Hopefully the restructuring package will get sorted because it is not in anyones interests for them to go under.

If you were to change anything else or cancel at this stage normal booking conditions and fees would apply
