My thoughts about the hat.

After looking at the most recent pictures of the Sorcerer's hat at Orlandorocks.com, I'm now totally convinced that something drastic is going to be done to The Great Movie Ride. The front view of the building is completely obstructed at this point, and the hat has become the big draw down Hollywood blvd.

This MUST be intentional. We are obviously meant to be distracted by the hat as some major construction or destruction happens behind it at the theater. Not one to be long distracted by massive headgear, I naturally wonder what is in store for TGMR.

I would tend to agree with you that something's up there. If it is to distract the park-goer while TGMR is being refurbished and up-dated, which feel it sorely needs, then so be it. But I would hate to think this wonderful ride will be eliminated only to be replaced by yet another thrill ride. I would be greatly disappointed. This is Disney, not Six Flags.

...of the Chinese Theatre facade might, unfortunately, be enough for right now.

Disney's recent and pricy renovation of the El Capitan theatre down the street from the real Mann's Chinese Theatre means that the former park icon is now, in a way, advertising for the competition.

Although I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese Theatre facade was removed fairly soon, I don't expect any near future changes the TGMR unless there's some catastrophic ride system failure (or perhaps if Monsters, Inc. is a big hit and the powers that be realize that Disney Studios is a thematically superior place for a movie tie-in ride compared to the currently rumored Imagination Pavilion location).

The GMR is blocked when you first enter the park, but it is still pretty visible from behind. I hope they keep it. It does look good.

This would also seem to quell the rumors of the return of Sorcery in the Skys. Shame that didn't come true.

It could be that Disney is really going to totally change the facade of the GMR building. I remember thinking that it was odd that both MGM and Universal used the chinese theater as an icon. (Does Universal still have its version?)

Another thing that I noticed, was in some of the concept art for the new hat, there is fireworks behind it. Maybe that's a sign that Sorcery in the SKy is coming back. I sure hope so..:bounce:

and I don't think it has anything to do with TGMR. I thought MGM was the main park to celebrate Walt's 100th. TGMR access is not blocked at all. All construction is around "the hat".

Yes, the park is getting a fireworks show, but not SitS.

So you know a link to the concept art with the fireworks? The only one I have seen, on wdwmagic.com, doesn't show any pyros.

Thanks!

Last week, a GMR CM told me that the GMR will be around for another 5 years....but then it will definitely be gone. She didn't know anything about the Chinese Theater facade. I was also surprised to see how completely the hat blocks the theater view when first walking into the park. I still say that that hat should be moved to somewhere outside the Ampitheater to serve as an icon and also to advertise Fantasmic!

Here's the concept art with the fireworks in the background:

Maybe the Belive fireworks from DL will be coming to Disney-MGM Studios. Who knows?

Ironically, "Shrek" premeired at the real Mann's in Hollywood.

I thought the REAL Manns was destroyed in Calif. back in the '70's . There was an outcry afterwards and thats why "it" and the Brown Derby[also destroyed] showed up at MGM. As a way to recapture a bit of the "old" Hollywood Tinsle Town feel. And why stars still put their feet in concrete at MGM?? what will they do with the " concrete Stars" if they change the facade to something else?? and then what will be the fate of the Brown Derby? it will seem waaay out of place! as will the Hollwoody and Vine Diner!!!

Oh,I can see it now they will create present day Hollywood[the mind boogles at the education children would get from that!! Oh,look Disney crack dealers,Disney Street Walkers in every gender, and Disney runaways trying to become stars!!!! ] :earseek:

I think they better leave it well enough alone!! Besides it would take a major overhaul. Something they haven't been willing to do,yet! They can't even afford new paint??

DH and I were there a couple of weeks ago for a quick trip, and my feeling is that the GMR is going. I'm thinking that they will keep the same building, change the facade from the Chinese theater, and keep the same ride workings inside, but change the attraction itself to the different Fantasia sections (ie-the dancing hippos, the sorecerers apprentice etc.) Fantasia is the sort of movie that can lend itself to being broken up into different sections, so they wouldn't be changing the actual ride apparatus, just what the ride goes through. That hat definitely blocks the theater, and is definitely there to draw attention away from the theater.

Or maybe there was no other place to put the hat. So what if its blocking GMR? I think of it as the focal point of the new celebration starting and isn't MGM the central park for the celebration i.e. like EPCOT was for the Millenium?

Get rid of OZ...I would be surprised - the busses, the maps still say "DISNEY MGM Studios"

Actually, the real Mann's Chinese Theater is alive and well in Hollywood, along with all of the great "concrete" autographs. They did add some additional theaters to it in the 70's, but the original facade is still there. Alas, the same cannot be said of the original Hollywood Brown Derby.:(
