All the help I received from all you smart people while planning my trip was soooo wonderful that I wanted to hopefully help someone else out while they're trying to make their dining choices...

When: January 26-29 (no, we're not AP holders, just happened that the EE preview was the same weekend)

Who:
Caitlin (me) - LOVES all things WDW...is a bit of an obsessive planner...somewhat of a picky eater, usually sticks to chicken and pasta, not much of a red meat fan...just turned 21 so very eager to try all sorts of fun alcoholic beverages that I could never try in WDW before
Chris - my wonderful boyfriend who surprised me with this trip for my birthday...23 years old...very laid back...goes along with my slightly obsessive planning like a true trooper...not a picky eater but does have some odd quirks about food (he doesn't eat cold food unless it's sweet...yeah, i have no idea either...)

We were on the dining plan...I'll talk more about that in the review...

Thursday, January 26th:

Lunch - Pop Food Court
First of all, the way this place looked was more than I expected. This was my first time staying here and I was happily surprised by how nice the food court was. I liked how they had the different stations depending on what you felt like eating and so on. We had just gotten to the hotel from the airport and wanted something fast and quick as we were headed to the MK that afternoon.
Both of us - chicken strips and french fries (2 CS credits)
These were great...I love WDW chicken strips. There's something about them that's so delicious. DBF thought they were good too. He had the barbecue sauce on his and I had the sweet and sour. They were both okay. The french fries were just that...french fries. He had a powerade and I had a water. He had a mickey bar for dessert which he devoured. I had a mickey rice krispie treat which I had the ear off of and saved for later.
Food: B+ (though I love the chicken strips, they're just that...it's not too hard to mess them up)
Atmosphere: A (like I said before, much more than I expected)
Service: A (quick and efficient...just what I want for counter service)

Dinner - 'Ohana (2 TS credits)
This was a last minute decision that I made. We originally had an ADR for Concourse Steakhouse that night but the day we left I decided to switch it to 'Ohana. I couldn't be happier that I did!
We waited about 15 minutes past our ADR time. When I went to check in it looked like they were having a problem at the front desk and the manager was coming over to take care of seating. That was fine though, we just sat in the lounge and ordered a couple of drinks. I think I had the Island Sunset. It was delicious and fruity and came with an umbrella. :) DBF had the Hurricane which he liked...I tried a sip and didn't like it too much.
Once we were called our server walked us through the restaurant and explained how everything worked. He was great throughout the entire meal! DBF ordered a coke and I ordered a water with lemon. Now, I always order a water with lemon when I go out to eat...I don't like how soda fills me up and I just prefer water. I've had lots of experience with water at restaurants. This was by far the worst water I've ever had in my entire life. It just tasted dirty. I put about five lemons in it to try to mask the flavor but eventually gave up and ordered a sprite instead. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is it just me or is the water in Orlando that awful?
The food was unbelievable. I loved the wontons and tried all the dipping sauces. My favorite was the peanut one, but the green one was great as well. It took some convincing on my part to get DBF to try the sauces and the only one he liked was the peanut one. He thought that wontons were just okay. The salad was some of the best salad I've ever had...the dressing was soooo good. DBF didn't try this as it is cold and not sweet...he's a little odd when it comes to that. Then came the shrimp and the wings. I don't eat shrimp, but that wasn't a problem as DBF ate about 15 of them. Obviously, he liked them...a lot. He also had about 6 of the wings. DBF eats a lot. It's actually quite remarkable...I have no idea where he puts it. We both enjoyed the wings. And then...the meat skewers came. DBF LOVED the "meat on a stick." In fact, he kept referring to how great the "meat on a stick" was at all of our other meals. He loved the steak...especially in the peanut sauce. We both thought the sausage was just okay. The pork was great, I loved it. And we both loved the turkey, it was excellent. I dipped that in the peanut sauce as well. The vegetables were okay. I'm not much of an assorted veggies kinda girl...I would have much preferred just some green beans instead of everything mixed with the onion...I don't do onion. DBF wouldn't even try them. He was too concerned with eating the enormous amount of meat that was piling up in front of him. I have to say, he did a great job. If we were paying out of pocket then we certainly would've gotten our money's worth here on the amount of meat he consumed alone. Oh, I almost forget the potatoes. We both adored the potatoes...they were excellent. Next came the dessert. I wasn't really looking forward to the dessert. I like chocolate. Obviously the bread pudding did not have any chocolate. After one bite I changed my mind. The dessert was wonderful as well. We didn't put the bananas foster sauce on it but I put a little on my plate and dipped it in a bit to see how it tasted...it was okay. Nothing spectacular in my opinion.
All in all, except for the filth water, this meal was fantastic!
Food: A (like I said, I'd like to see a change up on the vegetables...everything else was of A+ caliber though)
Atmosphere: A (made me wish I had kids for about 5 seconds so that I could see them go learn the hula...but only for about 5 seconds)
Service: A+ (got everything we wanted and more...he was really a wonderful server)

Day 1 Snack:
Dole Whip - one of my all time favorites...I had the pineapple and vanilla swirl...no float. It was wonderful, as always. I enjoyed it while watching the cutest little girl dance around with Rafiki from Lion King...made it even better.

More later...in the same thread...hope you're enjoying so far! Feel free to ask any questions, I'm happy to answer them and hope I can! :)

Thanks for the heads up about the water. I usually just get water with a meal but think I'll pass on this one. DH and I are going to 'Ohana our first night for our anniversary trip and my birthday. Did you notice if anything special was done for anyone for their birthday or anniversary? I can't wait! :cool1:

Waiting for more, I just LOVE dining reviews! :goodvibes

And yes, the water is very hit or miss at WDW. Sometimes we got really lucky and the fountain water was fine, but at other times it was completely nasty.

The table over from us had a little girl that was celebrating her birthday and they brought her over a cupcake (this was not a small cupcake) with a candle in it for her and the server announced her birthday and we all sang the birthday song. At an earlier point in the meal the same man who lead the hula dance lessons walked around with a microphone and sang happy birthday to a couple different people. I'm assuming it just depends on what you mention when you arrive or when you make your ADR. I hope they make your celebration special!

Thanks for posting, and thanks for mentioning the snack you were able to get. I have been wondering if they relaxed the guidelines and it sounds like they did. Looking forward to the next installment.

Great review, I can't wait for more. The water is horrible, I only drink bottled in FL. I had to laugh at you wanting a kid for about 5 seconds...I have a 16 year old, and every once in a while I get a 5 second "wish I had a baby" thought.

Sounds fantastic ~ Can't wait to read more.

Thanks for the fantastic review! Of course now I'm starving and have to eat some lunch PRONTO :)

Great review so far! I know about the water - it's the same on each trip. I try to buy a gallon of water at the Mercantile in the WL for our room and then drink iced tea at my meals. The water is plain and simply - GROSS!

BTW, you're really making me want to try the new menu at 'Ohana. But all my ADR's are in place... :confused3 what should I do???

Well, it's really up to you. Like I said before, I switched my ADR at the last minute to 'Ohana and couldn't be happier that I did, and I'm not even that big of a meat eater. Everything was just absolutely wonderful. My advice would be that if you have made an ADR for a place that you've already been to and could manage without on your next trip then try out the new menu at 'Ohana. Have a wonderful trip! :)

Day 2 - Friday, January 27th

Lunch - Flame Tree Barbecue (2 CS credits)
We were up early that day and skipped breakfast so we were at Flame Tree by about 11:30 at the latest. It was so nice and tranquil without crowds of people attempting to get their food and find a place to sit as I've experienced before there. By the way, if for some reason you're having a hard time finding this place, just follow the barbecue smell. I could smell it from pretty far away and it smelled unbelievable.
When we went up to get our food we were greeted by a bit of a grouchy CM taking our order. DBF was trying to see if he could switch something on his order to onion rings and she did not answer very nicely... :confused3 Oh well, everyone's entitled to a bad day every now and then. Now, onto the food...
DBF - One of the ways that I got him into helping me pick out where we were going to eat on this trip was through the food pic thread in this forum. (Again, I love you all! Thank you soooo much!!) After seeing a photo of the ribs here, he made the decision that he had to have them. So, he ordered the ribs that came with corn on the cob and baked beans. He also got a soda and a piece of chocolate cake. After we were seated he inhaled the ribs before I was done with half of my meal. When we got home from the trip he raved about these to his father and last night he asked me if he thinks we can get the recipe for the sauce they use. Needless to say, he really loved them. He also said that the corn was tasty. They gave him a decent sized piece of it too. He isn't a big fan of baked beans so he didn't try them, but I had a bite and they were good. He ate all of the chocolate cake as well. I had a bite of that and it was very good - moist and everything. DBF loved this meal and said that it's his AK must-do for every trip in the future. And I couldn't be happier that they supply wetknaps for those enjoying their ribs.
Me - I decided on the turkey sandwich. It was much bigger than I thought it would be and came on this fantastic multi-grain roll that I really enjoyed. I like wheat bread much more than white bread, so this roll might not be for everyone, but I loved it. They really piled on the turkey on my sandwich. I had only lettuce on it as I don't care for tomato much. I also grabbed a container of that amazing honey dijon sauce from the condiments counter and put some of it on the sandwich for a little flavor. I liked the sandwich very much - it was definitely my favorite of the counter service meals I had. It also came with a side of cole slaw but the whole vegetables mixed with mayo thing never really appealed to me so I passed on that. It was a generous portion though. For dessert I had a piece of the key lime pie. It wasn't anything special - it was good though. It was very tart and when I gave DBF a bite he made a priceless face. The crust was my favorite part. I also had a bottle of water.
A side note about the atmosphere - I know a lot of people enjoy watching the ducks while eating. I also liked this...until two of them decided to make it their mission to ruin my peaceful lunch. They would not leave us alone! I wouldn't have minded if they were close by but when they're right under your table it gets a little annoying. I was so sad that we had to move away from our great table overlooking the water, especially since we could see the huge drop on EE and hear all the people screaming as they went down. I was having lots of fun teasing DBF that I was going to force him on it during a future trip. Oh well, it is called ANIMAL Kingdom after all.
Food: A+ (easily the best counter service of the trip...we both really enjoyed our meals)
Atmosphere: B+ (would've been higher, but I have to knock it down because of the ducks)
Service: C (the CM taking our order could've been much nicer...there's no need to be snappy at WDW!)

Dinner - Wolfgang Puck's Cafe (2 TS credits)
Tonight was our night in Downtown Disney so after checking out the menu and seeing some things we liked we booked a late ADR for 9 pm. We got there around 8:30 and were seated within 10 minutes. As soon as we sat down I noticed how close the tables were together. I felt like we were sitting on top of the people next to us. I didn't like that at all. I did enjoy how you can see what's happening in the kitchen though and DBF pointed out to me that they have monitors hanging around the restaurant that show different activities in the kitchen.
After we were seated our server came over right away and initially, we thought he was going to be great. He took our drink orders and brought them back over. DBF got a pina colada (hahaha, always makes me laugh when he orders one of these, though he'll only do it with me, any other time he has to have a beer like a manly man.) I took a sip of it and it was okay...I've had much better. I ordered the Starburst Martini, or at least that's what I think it's called. Oh goodness. This could be the best drink I've ever had. I can't even explain it...just please, go try it. You will not be sorry. The server took our order and was on his way. This is when we started to notice a change in our server's demeanor. Now, before I go on, let me preface this with saying that I waited tables in high school and have continued doing so during summer break from college. I know just how hard it is to handle this job. Now, that being said, it seemed as though after our server found out that we were on the dining plan we were his absolute last priority. Since the tables were so close together I could easily hear his conversation with the other tables and he was much more helpful with the menu to them than with us. I'm talking he went over all the drinks with them without any of them even asking for him to do so. He gave this long explanation about how the drink I ordered was their house drink and they made it in a special way. He also immediately brought them out their bread - but oh, not us. We didn't get our bread until AFTER our entrees were served to us! I wasn't pleased with the service at all. I understand that people have their bad days and I'm especially sympathetic to those who wait tables since I do it myself, but this was just uncalled for. More about the service later, onto the food now.
DBF - For his appetizer he ordered the calamari. This was great calamari. It had a really light breading on it that made it much tastier than calamari I've had in the past. He ate most of the plate by himself and said that he really liked it. For his entree he ordered the shrimp and scallop fettucine. It was a huge portion and came in a light white wine broth that was excellent. I had a small bite of one of his scallops and it was really quite good. For dessert he wanted the chocolate cake that we had seen on the allearsnet.com menu, but they had changed this option. The chocolate cake now had a strawberry sauce in it that he didn't think he'd care for, so he opted for the carrot cake instead. I didn't even try this as my dessert was sooooo good, and he barely touched it either. He said it was okay, but he was way more interested in my dessert.
Me - For my appetizer I ordered the spinach and five cheese dip. I expected a small portion of this, not the gigantic plate that was placed in front of me. It came with large pieces of crisp parmesan flatbread that was great for dipping. This was a great appetizer, and large enough to feed at least three people. For my entree I decided on the three cheese ravioli after hearing some positive things about it here. The things I heard did not do this dish justice. The sauce was incredible! DBF comes from a very Italian family and tried a bite and even proclaimed it some of the best red sauce he's ever had. It was truly delicious, and the portion again was huge. I left about four ravioli on my plate...there was just no way I could actually finish them all. This was a really great dish - I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who dines at this restaurant in the future. Oh, and by the way, once the bread arrived it was very good. Definitely take a bite of it if you're there. For dessert I ordered the chocolate fondue. It came with about 6 strawberries, two pieces of brownie, and 2 pieces of pound cake for dipping. It was sooooo good. The chocolate sauce was amazing and the strawberries were so fresh. Both of the pastries were also very good, though the brownie was already so rich that the last thing it needed was more chocolate.
All in all, this was a wonderful meal, on the food side. On the service side, I was actually quite appalled. After giving us our dessert menus we waited 20 minutes before he came back to take our order. I felt like after he found out that we were on the dining plan and knew that he was guaranteed his tip, he didn't care about us at all and we were his absolute last priority. Has anyone else ever experienced something similar to this? Please share if you have!
Food: A+ (best meal of the trip...all the food was delicious, not to mention the drinks :) )
Service: D (see all above)
Atmoshere: B (I didn't like how close the tables were together)

Snacks:
Premium Mickey Bar - Always love these things. I had mine while watching the street performers at MGM. They really are hilarious.
Turkey Leg (not included in dining plan) - this was another one of DBF's must haves...can you tell he likes meat just a bit yet? Personally, I think these things smell like ham and look disgusting, but he loved it. Oh well.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! I'll post Day 3 tomorrow! :)

Well you definitely have me interested in Wolfgang's now. Your server's attitude disgusts me, I would have said something to the manager but I know that's a tough call. Thanks for posting, looking forward to the next installment.

Great dining review! You've made me think about stopping at WGP for the martini alone. I may be able to convince DH that all our disney dollars should go towards fun alcoholic beverages! Keep the reviews coming! :thumbsup2
