... he has an 11:00 appointment.... wish me luck- last time he wouldn't open his mouth!! He has a cavity, and he knows it so maybe he'll be more cooperative!!
Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
Im going to be in the same boat next month when my youngest makes his first visit. My oldest has always done great, but youngest is a different animal. Im already nervous.
Let us know how it goes! My DDs both went to the dentist for the first time when they were close to 3. I was very nervous for the first one as she was so reserved and shy, I didn't think she would cooperate. She did GREAT! The hygenist was super with her and the dentist just took a quick peek.
My second DD couldn't wait to climb up into the dentists chair. She felt so left out watching her sister's appointments.
Well there goes my "Mother of the Year" award..... my son has NINE..... Yes 9...... cavities. The Dentist (who is new- he's in with our regular one now) looked at me like I was some ignorant... whatever.... I said, "His sister is 13 and has NEVER had a cavity." Then he kind of backed off.... anyway.... we have 5 upcoming appointments.... it's gonna cost about $1000 but it has to be done. I told my inlaws.....NO MORE CANDY.....
Yikes. Poor kid. Some kids are more prone to cavities than others, I think. You're a good mom, I can't believe that dentist had such an attitude with you.
My niece and nephew both have had a lot of cavities.... my dh has been told he has "soft teeth". The dentist wasn't too bad- I just feel so guilty ya know? We are moving on from here- I think he will be better about brushing and flossing now that the dentist has talked to him.
I didn't read this until late, so my advice that I would have given is mute at this point. I would have told you to take a camera with you. In my experience, if I make a big deal out of a "first," the kids do much better with it. Mine were thrilled to sit in the cool dentist's chair to get their pictures taken. The thought of a prize afterward was helpful, too. The dentist always has stickers or small toys for after she's finished.
I got the same attitude from the school nurse when she looked at my kids' teeth. They both had tons of cavities. Hello? They were only in this country for a few months and we had started fixing their teeth in quadrants. It wasn't as if I was ignoring the problem. My kids had very visible cavities. I bet you can hardly see, if at all, your DS's. Most of the time the dentist only finds them because s/he has that poker or an xray to help them. I can hear the "your nuts, Mom" if you got close to him with a poker instrument to check his teeth. Besides, like you'd know what to look for without the training of dental school.
Good advice about the camera! I took him in to watch his big sister get her teeth checked when he was about 2 1/2 the hygeinist turned to speak to him and said, "LEAVE JACK ALONE!"
All of his cavities are between his molars... there is one that you can see.....
Oh I feel for you! My DD who has been going to the dentist since she was 3 has horrible teeth. The dentist feels she has a very high acid in her mouth and basically her saliva eats her teeth. I think right now she has 5 fillings and she is only 7. She also has weakend enamal which doesn't help. We hope and pray her primary teeth are stronger.
I even asked if I should bring her in 4 times a year for a cleaning and he didn't feel it would help. We had her checked by 2 different dentist just to be sure.
Good luck. We use an electric tooth brush and rinse and floride (we have well water). You might want to ask about that too.
One good thing the dentist uses gas so DD doesn't have any painful memories.
Oh My! The poor thing! Sorry it didnt turn out the way you had hoped.
And Im sure you are a very good mother. You cared enough to take care of him and get him checked out, right?
