My sister just called me and is freaking out - **small update**

I guess you missed all those 70's slasher movies, where we were always shouting, "Don't go down to the basement!" :scared1::scared1::scared1: :lmao:

Of course, they didn't have very many "Don't go UP the stairs," flicks. :teeth:

Correct. I don't do horror films.
:goodvibes

He probably thought he had lost it somewhere in his own home and was calling it so he could listen for the rings and find it (I do this fairly often! Usually the phone has slipped beneath a cushion or something).

If you KNOW the phone is still in the house (or think it is) you just keep calling and moving from room to room until you're close enough to wherever it is to hear it ring.

Of course if you've accidentally left it at a woman's house, you'll scare the bejeezus out of her! :scared1:

:thumbsup2 :lmao:

The exterminator just left here a few minutes ago and I told him about this thread and he laughed and said "Ah the memories". He's a great guy but I wish I didn't need him at all! Dang ants.

I asked that and she said he said he didnt the last time he left, but who knows if he is telling the truth? He hasnt about anything else.

Even if he doesn't have a key to the house, it can be picked/bumped with a bump key; it takes seconds. I don't know if your sister is in the position to spend $ on high security locks, but that's what I would do right now. We have had Medeco locks since our first apartment was burglarized. Medeco locks can't be bumped and can only be duplicated by the purchaser and through the locksmith where it was purchased. Even if she is renting, she can take it with her when she moves and have the old lock put back on.

I hope there is a silly explanation for the mysterious phone. It doesn't look good so far. If it was dropped by someone accidentally, there would be a call history, contacts, etc. Good luck to your sister. :goodvibes:goodvibes

What kind of dogs does your sister have? Just curious if the dogs "let" the person in because they knew the person?! Just a thought...

I don't freak out much and have read tons of threads on the dis that said call the police and just rolled my eyes. This would have me peeing my pants. I am so glad she got normal police officers and not lazy ones and that they are taking this as a serious matter. She does need to have someone either stay with her or go stay somewhere with someone. But if he is at all nuts enough to do this I hate to say it but bad things could happen to her and anyone with her. I hate to bring that up but there was just a shooting of 4 people in AL this morning one of them was the soon to be ex wife. She needs an alarm system wherever she stays and to not open the garage until the car is started and it is locked. I hope her soon to be ex doesnt have a gun collection. I hate to be even more dramatic and freak you out even more but this is just awful. If it is him I hope they catch him and lock him up.

A shi tzu and a Bichon Frise - not the best guard dogs!

This thread just made me realize I've certainly mellowed in my old age, but not in a good way.

Years ago, I would have probably freaked too. Now, I guess I'm so dumb that I would have actually gone upstairs to investigate thinking that its just a phone, never thinking it could be a PERSON with a phone. :sad2:

I think I need to start watching TV & movies again.

Glad she had her wits about her.

I'm just the opposite. Years ago I would have thought it must have been a friend's or something. Now, I'd immediately grab my kids and leave the house.

I was happy she got a nice officer, too. I am not one for calling the police over every little thing, but it was my idea to call them this time. I told her who cares if they think you are crazy - just call them! But they were sooo nice to her and made her feel better.

I do not feel safe staying with her - so that is not going to happen, but she is more than welcome with us.

My sister is such a scaredy cat that she was convinced at first it was a ghost. :rotfl: I had to tell her ghosts don't have cell phones. And I would be more afraid of someone breaking in my house than of a ghost!

Does her ex have a working cell phone that she knows about? If he doesn't (or didn't), I'd guess this was his and he was in the house trying to find something.

I was just thinking, since he kept writing yesterday how he couldn't afford child support, maybe he hoped to enter the house, steal and destroy any old financial bills, receipts, records that he hoped might still be stored at the house. Without the proof she needs X amount of dollars, he was hoping he might be able to get the child support dropped to a lower rate. Only DSis got home sooner than expected and he had to run out the door. Luckily, it didn't turn into a nasty confrontation.

It's okay - yes, I posted that it only showed the number that had just called when she heard it ring. She called it back and it went to voicemail and then said that the person hasnt set up a mailbox yet. Which makes me think the phone was just purchased.

Well, that doesn't really prove that the FOUND cell phone was just purchased, only that it hadn't rec'd or sent any calls yet (although it probably is new). It was the number that was used to CALL the cell that appears to be new (because the mailbox hadn't been set up yet). KWIM?

Pretty darn creepy. I'm glad she got sympathetic officers, but why in the world would she need the officer's personal cell phone number? She should be calling the police line if there's trouble. (And she'd better hope her ex isn't buddies with this officer.)

It may have been his work cell phone - by "personal" meaning the one that he carries - a direct line to him if she has more info to add to the case file as opposed to calling the non-emergency number and asking for him. I would hope that in a true emergency she'd still call 911.

OP - I do love a good mystery but not so much when it's real life so I certainly hope this has a nice happy and logical ending.

I dont think it is unusual for officers to give out personal numbers. I just called about a vicious dog in my neighborhood recently and the responding sheriff officer gave me his personal # to call if had any more problems. I dont really think they are their private home #'s really, the officers cell # was on his business card. I would imagine they are job provided cell phones.

I think she said earlier that the phone didn't have any other call history (other than that number that was used to call it) or contacts. That's why she's thinking it was new.

Wow, that is awfully scary. I hope your sister is okay and this all works out.

I'm so glad the police took the cell phone. Hopefully they can dust it for prints. I hope your DS stays w/you guy for a few nights until this is sorted out. Ex-DH or not, the person who did this doesn't sound normal. She might think she's fine now, but when darkness sets in she'll probably be changing her tune.

Holy cow, Jenvenza! I'd be freakin' in the hell out. Thanks for keeping us posted.

And your sig pics get cuter every time you change them! :)

He does have a work cell phone, but he uses that as his personal cell phone as well.

No, it doesnt prove anything, I am just guessing that it was recently purchased. And why does it bother you that the officer gave her his personal cell number? I am sure it was his work cell number. He said to call that because he could be there within 3 minutes. Nothing wrong or strange about that.

I love a good Dis mystery as well, but this is too scary. It isnt like the the old safe in the basement mystery we had last year.

I think she said earlier that the phone didn't have any other call history (other than that number that was used to call it) or contacts. That's why she's thinking it was new.

Exactly.
