My Select Comfort Bed is Causing Hip Problems

We are not happy with our Queen size pillow top Select Comfort Bed. It's about 6 yrs old. It slopes down to the middle. (Yes, we have it put together correctly and the foam pushed down in the middle) I have felt like I was sleeping downhill since Day 1. But DH was the one who was having back pain 6 yrs ago and it felt good on his back so I kept it. But now both of us are having back/hip problems. Sacroiliac trouble on the "down hill" side for both of us. My right hip and his left hip. Mine keeps going out on me causing me trouble walking this week. I have been to chiropractor but he can't seem to get me right. Have an apptmt with a D.O. but they can't take me until mid July. In the meantime, wondering what kind of mattress we should get. Has anyone had this problem with a Select Comfort? If we bought the King size the chambers would be bigger (I would think). Would this fix our problem? Was thinking about the Heavenly Bed. Any thoughts?

I do NOT have one, but when I was researching one, the one thing people kept saying was that the queen size was a poor choice, and that the king size made for a better night's sleep.

I hope you can get it all worked out!

Our King size has been good for us. However, I would prefer a Heavenly Bed, DH prefers the Select Comfort.

I'm sorry you have had such a hard time.

We just got a new mattress this year and we love it---although I can't remember the name of it!

Mattress shopping was not fun. After a while they all start to feel alike!

Good luck in your search for a new one!

We have a King so we haven't had that problem. Does your queen have separate chambers? If you have separate chambers, try opening your mattress and seeing if the center foam piece is upright. Our bed felt strange for a while and we finally discovered that was our problem. Once we fixed it, the bed was much more comfortable. Another suggestion is to change the settings to see if you can find something that works better. Maybe your side is too soft or hard.

I would also contact SC and see what they have to say they might even send you another center peice.

We got the Queen this year and just love it.but I do have to play with the numbers depending on the mood I'm in.

Sorry to hear that. We have had our queen size select comfort for about 4 years and just love it. I hope you get it figured out soon.

We have the Queen size select comfort, too. DH loves it, since he needs the mattress to be as firm as a brick and I need it to be...well...comfortable. I don't like it, since there is always a "cliff" in the middle of the bed that annoys me to no end. We haven't had the downhill issue, b/c my side is the downhill, I guess. I'd call select comfort and tell them what's going on.

I would try adjusting the center foam. I never had the downhill in the center problem on either our queen or our king size. The only reason why we went to a king was because I kept getting pushed out of bed ;)

Most people complain about the foam being too far up and feeling it. It sounds like yours is too far down maybe. I might just take it apart as well and readjust everything just in case. My dad now has my queen and hasn't had that issue, neither did I when we used it, so I am simply guessing.

Make sure you are also not sleeping on too soft (or possibly hard, but I would guess soft first) a bed in general. My number has changed through out time and keeps me free from back and neck trouble I would have otherwise.

If you can't fix it yourself, call Select Comfort... they actually have been very helpful to me when I had issues (long story, but I broke our pump before I gave it to my dad)

As for the Heavenly Bed. I read many reviews that they break down (coils) and sag far too quickly. I wanted one at one point ;)

I have called and CS did send another center piece. It did not help us. I discussed the problem several times with their CS dept, with no positive results. We purchased the queen upon the recommendation of the salesman, but we really should have bought a king. It is too samll, and unlike a conventional bed, the supports seem to break down. My DH is 6'5", and is a Paul Bunyan kind of guy. We were told, gee that is too bad the the rep did not note the difference in sleep area in the queen conventional bed and the SC bed. We can sell you a king size if you want. Nope. We are tired of sleeping on a hill, and getting rid of it.

Wow, that is so interesting. DH and I bought the select comfort bed while I was prego. My back was killing me among other aliments and his hip really hurt him. We too felt like we were sleeping down hill the whole time. We were really upset as we didn't want to have to go the expense of buying a new bed. Well while at the Dolphin we got to sleep on the Heavenly Bed. We were there all week. When we returned home we purchased the bed. We haven't had a problem since.

We bought the Select Comfort queen bed about a month ago and are happy with it but have deceided to buy the king size so we have more room.

Can you tell me what the Heavenly Bed is? We are in the market for a new bed, and I hope the this [urchase can be the last for a long wihle.

The Heavenly Bed is a bed that is made for the Westin hotels. The Swan and Dolphin have them. It was SO comfortable. Here is the link: http://www.westin-hotelsathome.com/bed/experience.aspx
It says that so many people called the hotel after staying there that they decided to sell them to the public. Holycow -- how long have you had yours? Helenabear says that they break down prematurely. I'm "fluffy" so probably my side would break down quicker than the average person because I'm heavier. The King Heavenly Bed is around $1450 plus $200 shipping. That's a lot if the bed isn't going to last. We happened to be at the mall tonight and went into SC and laid down on their king size. Even on the king 7000 series I felt like the bed was going downhill. I don't think we'll be buying another. Like to hear more pros and cons about the Heavenly Bed. Buying a new mattress isn't something I planned on doing. Thought my SC would last me 20 yrs :(

I have a queen SC and it dips in the middle. It isn't a big problem for me because I sleep alone, but I've wondered why it does this. I may try calling the company and asking about it.

We have been pricing mattresses and foundations for about 1 year, now. My DH is like a sleepwalker drawn into the sleep center of every store that we walk into, and the sales staff can recognize sleep deprived people because they have not shown us one set under $3000! Our SC is only 5 years old, and we spent $2200 on it. THey do advertise that they will take it back within one month, but it doesnl't fall sinl in 30 days, and they do not pay the S&H, so it still is costly to repace.

I have read that the mattresses that have memory foam as part of their makeup will break down earlier tht those without, but since we seem to average a new set every 5 years or so, I guess the HB is the cheapest one so far.

Hi Again,

We've had our bed just over a year now. My DH and I are I would say pooh sized but I would have to say bigger than that! lol This has been the first bed in a long time that my DH will actually sleep in. We haven't noticed any break down as of yet. I would also like to say we had the Sc not even a year! We paid more for that than the HB. (I hadn't heard about the premeture break down) so well see. So far so good!
