Figured I'd post a review of HoJo's Anaheim in case anyone is interested. We did our first family trip to DLR/DCA last week (stayed 4 nights, May 4-7). We decided to stay at the Howard Johnson after seeing the MouseSavers deal and seeing they had a great splash pad area (my kiddos love those!). We got a deluxe queen room (2 queen beds). We stayed in Building 2, 3rd floor.

Overall, I must say I was pretty pleased, especially for the price. The rooms and lobby areas are nothing super fancy but it was more than good enough for us As it turns out, we actually didn't spend that much time in the rooms themselves..we spent almost all our time at the parks :cool1: Except for the first day we arrived when we spend the morning playing in the pool and at Castaway Cove (more on that below), we pretty much just used the hotel for showering/bathing and sleeping :)

-Location-
I personally thought the location was pretty good. It is right across the street from Mimi's (we had brunch there the first day) and then McDonalds & IHOP are right on the way to DLR so good for breakfast. DH & I were actually kind of shocked how close it was (it seemed like a 10 min walk?). Sure, the Best Western Park Place Inn and Park Vue Inn are definitely closer....but for us, it didn't seem to make a big difference. I don't know..we figured, if we are going to be out walking for ~10 hours a day, what is an extra 5,10 minutes, KWIM? Again, I guess that is just us...given the relatively short park hours, we really wanted to maximize our time at the parks, so we didn't go back to the hotel for breaks and were typically there everyday from rope drop to closing. We rented a double stroller for our kiddos, so they could rest/sleep in it whenever they got tired, and it worked out pretty well for us.

Also, I should add we were in Building 2, facing the pool. I initially was a bit worried about the noise given the proximity to the freeway, but it actually was super quiet! The only thing that was loud was the fireworks the first night we were there (but kids were dead asleep by that point!)

-Amenities-
Our room had a small fridge as well as a microwave which was super useful as my kids (3 and 4yo) still really like to have hot milk in the morning and before bed. We just bought milk at the gift shop downstairs, which was pretty handy (it is open pretty early/late..i think like 6am to 11pm or something). THe room had a safe and it was totally big enough for 2 iPads ( with survivor cases), 2 ipods, plus a laptop.

-Castaway Cove-
On the first day (Sunday) we arrived at the hotel around 9:30am, and our room wasn't going to be ready until 3pm. It was okay though since DS saw the top of Castaway Cove from the taxi (LOL) and was BEGGING to play in it. So they held our luggage while we got a bag with all our pool stuff and got changed. Castaway Cove does not open until 10:00am, but the regular pool opens at 9:00am, so we just played in the pool for a bit first, which the kids also enjoyed.

As other posters have said in other threads, the Castaway Cove is great for younger kids.. though i saw a lot of older kids (10+) having fun there too :) There is also a hot tub in that area too, which was nice :) It does have showers and bathroom/changing areas there which was convenient. The kids got a kick out of the huge dumping bucket (a bell rings when the bucket is full, to "warn" everyone, then it pours out).

Anyway, overall I would totally recommend staying at the HoJo, esp if you can get a deal. Even if you don't make use of the Castaway Cove (we only used it one morning) it still is pretty good. It would have been cool to have a view of the fireworks from our room (i think that is only select rooms that cost more), but that was only 1 night of our stay, and but at that point my kids had been dead asleep anyway  Plus, from what I've read you can actually see the fireworks from Castaway Cove or the parking lot (someone correct me if I'm wrong!)

Also, if you are considering renting a stroller, CityStrollerRentals does deliver directly to HoJos (and picks up from there too) which is super convenient. Even if your room isn't ready they just deliver it to the front desk. I cannot recommend having a stroller enough :goodvibes

I stayed at HoJos for one night last June and found it nice. I think the best part was the location - a quick 5 min walk to the parks . The hotel staff was friendly and the grounds were clean. I think the room could have used a little updating, but it was still clean and adequate for one night.

I would sometimes love to have a jumbo sized stroller for myself. How large do they run? And I will need someone to do the pushing. Hey! We can always take turns man. :)

..........

Lol

No.....really!

I loved the HoJo for my visit in October 2012. Especially the view of the fireworks (when kiddo didn't have the energy to stay in the parks). I stayed in building #4, and the launch point seemed to be directly across the street from the parking lot adjacent to buildings 4 & 6.

Thanks for the Hojo review, we are staying for 10 nts in July and a lot of your information is useful. Thank you for noting the pool opening times, did you happen to see what the closing times were for both pool areas?

We are also staying in building 2, when you were walking to and from the parks is it quicker/easier to use the entrance/exit facing the pool or out to the parking lot?

And another if you don't mind, would you recommend bringing a power strip or is there plenty of outlets in the room?

TIA :goodvibes

Yeah, i think by the fourth night I started to notice some things looked a little worn (e.g. paint fading in some parts here and there), but in all honesty I was so tired at the end of each day (in a good way!) I didn't have much energy to be really pay attention or be bothered by it much.

I believe the pool is open till 10pm...i know i would see people swimming every night there after we got to our hotel room and that was always like 9 or 930. :)

as for Castaway Cove, i think it is open as late (or maybe closes a little earlier?) i think they shut the spray stuff a bit earlier (i want to say 9) but i think the keep the hot tub open till a bit later :)

and we brought a power strip as we had tons of electronics (two smartphones, two itouches, two ipads)...i think it was useful! there may be enough outlets but they'd be scattered around the room (there was one by the nightstand, and another by the desk area but we liked to keep everything in one place) :)

and coming back from the parks we always just came in through the parking lot area (near lobby)..we often stopped by the gift shop (building 1 i think?) to get bottled water for the night. i don't think we ever used the entrance by the pool.

oh and i forgot to mention across the hall from the gift shop there is a small arcade...maybe like 5 or 6 machines?

Also worth noting, the laundry is in basement and there are two washers and maybe 3-4 dryers. I went late at night so I didn't have a problem getting one.

We just got back from 3 nights at Hojo's too! (May 9-12).

Really liked it as well (me, wife and DS5).

We sprang for the Disney View room, and got to watch fireworks from our balcony twice. Son was asleep for the first, but loved the second - it was his first real professional fireworks show.

Got Von's grocery delivery first day, and also loved the fridge/microwave/coffee-maker. Saved us time & $ in the mornings.

Beds and pillows were REALLY comfy.

The walk wasn't bad at all - I was worried before we went. It takes a few minutes, but nothing of note. I thought it might wear us out :-)

The Castaway Cove made the arrival & departure days (we only did DL for Sat/Sun) it's own little vacation. DS5 loved both pool areas, and the Cove is great for the short attention spans of little ones - they can flit from thing to thing to thing. He spent hours there. The young lifeguard Brittany kept the bunch of little guys in line, too.

I give it a big thumbs up! And yes, it's not the Four Seasons, but I have neither the $ or the patience for that myself :-)

Oh yeah, and their cable TV had Sprout and Nick Jr (for those times when we needed to have him inside and not moving :-)

We were there from May 3-10 in building 2 and loved it! We are usually in building 3 but loved how quiet building 2 was!

Last time I took my son to DL was May 2013 and we stayed at Disneyland Hotel. The walks weren’t as short as I thought for onsite property especially with a stroller. I just made a reservation for 1 week in Oct 2015 at Hojo. I figure the walking distance is probably the same but the price is about half of what I paid last time. Hopefully the pool is as good as DL.

My question for the experienced Hojo travelers is which building should I request? According to Hojo’s website, there are 6 buildings. How far are they from each other? The package I booked through Disney doesn’t give me an option to pick room type / building.

It is only for my son (who will be 6 ½ next October) and myself. I like the Queen / Jr. bunk suite. Looks fun to climb up and down. But that room category is only in building 1 facing the freeway. Is that a good choice? I should also say that we are from the east coast with a 3-hour time difference. Chances are we will be back in the hotel before 7 pm. If I am going to be stuck in the room for a few hours while my son sleeps, I prefer to have a comfortable room.

Appreciate any and all input!

If you booked through Disney, then I assume your only choice was a "standard room". At Hojo, I believe those would be a king room in building 1, freeway side, a two queens room in building 1 freeway side, or a 2 double beds room in buildings 3, 4, 5 or 6. Building 1 is the tallest of the buildings with 7 floors. They have added some soundproofing to the freeway side of floors 1-6 which does help a lot, but don't expect not to hear any freeway noise. I am a light sleeper and do ok in those rooms. The 7th floor has skylights and no additional soundproofing. I have not tried one of those rooms. Building 1 also houses the gift shop/convenience store, game room, and a laundry room. Buildings 3-6 are two story buildings with no elevators. The second floor has skylights in the rooms.

Other room categories that Hojo has include a two queens deluxe, located in building 2 which is the furthest away building but the quietest, a king deluxe also in building 2, the two queens premium view on the non-freeway side of building one, the queen/bunkbed room you referenced, and some suites. I would think any of these rooms would be an upgrade and you would need to contact Hojo directly, local number for the hotel, not the national 1-800 number, to ask what your options are for upgrading a room bought in a Disney package.

Did they at least have the Disney Channel on their cable? We did Paradise Pier last time, so they had Disney and a couple of Disneyland/Disney Cruise info-channels. We love those (even though WDW does them better), but my kids need at least the Disney Channel to get going in the mornings.

Hojo has upgraded their cable offerings in the last couple years. They definitely have the Disney channel. My boys say they also watch Cartoon Network and the Discovery channel when they are there.

As far as noise, we just stayed in bldg 1 two weeks ago, 5th floor in one of the kids suites (specifically requested anything but the 7th floor to avoid the skylights), facing the freeway. I was astounded at how little we heard the freeway! It was right there, just outside the windows, but they did a phenomenal job of soundproofing. Much of the time the AC was running, but even when it shut off, I could barely hear the freeway, if at all. It was a concern of ours going in, as my wife is a very light sleeper, and she was not bothered by noise at all.

haha, I thought mine is the only one who can't live without Disney channels!
