I have had this Pyrex glass cake pan 9 x 13 for years and tonight I was baking Chicken in it. I added a little water to the drippings, Closed the Oven, got 3 steps away when it sounded like a bomb went off in the Oven!!! The pan shattered!! It is ALL over the oven!! I'm so glad none of my family was hurt!!

Have you ever had anything pyrex expode?? What a mess!! No dinner here tonight unless Dh stops for pizza.

That's VERY strange. I've never heard of Pyrex exploding. The set I have is from my mom and it's from at least the 70s if not before. I'll be extra vigilant now... Glad no one was hurt...

I had a pyrex pie plate explode once. I was holding it in my hand (with a potholder) hot from the oven and WHAM! then I wasn't holding anything but a small piece of purple glass. It was super scary. Luckily, neither me nor my cat took any glass.

Was the water cold or warm? I know that I had a baking stone break once, b/c it was straight from the oven and I put something cold on it. I guess the extreme heat and then sudden cold causing the breaking.

So glad it didn't explode while you had the oven open.

My mother had the glass bowl that went with her mixer explode once when she put hot potatoes in it to mash. They called the company and they sent them a new mixer, but it was the fear of injury rather than the loss of the bowl that was the problem.

I had a pyrex dish expode at work one time. My boss had put the stove on (which is a flat countertop) and the dish was on the top & it got too hot & exploded. It was scary. I got hit from behind.

Whoa..how scary. I have heard that this may happen because of the drastic change in temperature.

I also recall that it could be because of thermal stress and fatigue and found a site with an explanation: http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/eng99/eng99265.htm

Now I am worried whether my Pyrex is all that safe or not ... :guilty:

I had a pyrex 9 x 13 blow up on Christmas Eve one year about 5 minutes before the inlaws were due to arrive. I had added cold liquid to the dish & it exoloded! There were hunks of glass through the entire oven, we had to take it apart......I was in tears because it ruined the entire holiday meal.

Happened to me too because I added cold water while it was cooking. Now I have a pan of hot water waiting when I use Pyrex.

Yep, it sounds like it could either have been thermal shock (the difference in temperature) or fatigue. It was at it's end. Too bad it couldn't have waited til after dinner was over with & happened gently in the sink instead.

My dad left a piece of mom's Pyrex on a hot burner once and it exploded.

I had a piece crack in half once, but I can't recall why.

Years ago I worked in a restaurant. We all knew that you had to let soda glasses and ice cream bowls cool before putting anything into them or they would explode.

My guess is that the cold water caused the pan to explode.

Glad you weren't injured.

Can anyone explain this one:

I had a 9x13 Pyrex dish -- just a plain rectangle dish that I'd had for years. I took the dish out of the oven (I'd baked frozen chicken nuggets, and the temperature was fairly high, maybe 400-425 degrees), and I set it on top of the stove. I hadn't been using the stovetop, so nothing there was hot. It sat there for a minute or so, then the Pyrex cracked into about five pieces. It wasn't an explosion like others described, which is lucky since it was OUT of the oven at the time.

I can understand cold water making the hot dish crack . . . but cracking at room temperature after it leaves the hot oven?

I have. My mom was cooking a turkey breast and asked me to add a little water while she was gone if it needed it. I added just the smallest amount (maybe 1/4 cup). Just a minute later it exploded and started a fire from the grease in the oven.

Well, if you was not cooking anything on the stove top, it could have been cold or cool - you were cooking the chicken at 400-425 - well, that's the temp of the oven - the glass can retain heat and get higher than that - if you put even a 400 degree glass pan on a cool metal surface, it can break.

I was roasting a chicken in my pyrex backing dish, I didn't add anything to it, and I heard a POP in the over. The dish had broken in half. Very weird.

Been there done that my pan was old also. Making chicken added water and it exploded. It was like safety glass all over the oven. Had to wait for everythig to cool before cleaning up mess!! Not fun. But I bought another one and havn't had another incident.

I once had a pyrex baking dish explode on thanksgiving day - I had just taken it out of the oven, all it had in it was a little "juice" from a removed turkey, I put it on top of the stove (which was turned off) and it went off like a bomb - there were little crumbles of glass from one end of the kitchen to the other.

I had a pyrex/pampered chef mixing bowl explode in my hand - I was just taking it out of the cupboard and BAM! A bajillion pieces all over and I was left holding just the handle. Strangest thing ever. The only thing I can think of is that my cupboard is against two outside walls and maybe there was enough thermal shock just going from there to the warmer kitchen air :confused3

It wasn't enough for me to stop using pyrex, though. I got a replacement bowl and still use it as well as lots of other pyrex pieces.

I have started ridding my home of both Pyrex and Correlle wear. I hate the idea that at any given time this may happenor with the Correlle wear when it does break it shatters in little sliver.

I have now started using the rubber pans. Love them and my kids can use them to bake and I feel so much better about them. They cleanup in the dishwasher and as of yet have had no problems. I am not sure how long I have had my longest but I would guess approx. 5 years.
