It wasn't bad enough he has kennel cough from a recent kennel stay (despite the vaccine).

He got sprayed by a skunk last night straight in the face! It was awful - he apparently swallowed the skunk spray and inhaled it because it came out both ways, vomit and cough, and on the other end, too. Ugh!

Thankfully I'd bought some skunk shampoo when I'd seen it this summer, always good to have that on hand.

But I feel badly seeing the little guy so sick.

Anyone else's pets have these types of things going on this summer? Let me know I'm not the only bad doggy mom!

aww that stinks...literally!!

Burton had kennel cough about a month ago...despite also having the vaccine. he's pretty social and always had daycare and the park so its par for the course.
We kept him isolated for 2 weeks after his final cough. Was a rough 3 week time period.
Does that skunk shampoo work??

Aw, man! That has to smell REALLY bad! As much as I know you want to give him a hug,just...yuck. I hope the skunk shampoo works.

Ya, the stuff that came out of his stomach smelled so bad, I could barely clean it up. Normally I have a strong stomach for these things but this was AWFUL! :faint: It's no wonder he threw it up. Yuck.

I usually buy the good skunk stuff in the pet store, but this I saw in a bargain store and it worked ok. Muzzle still stinks a bit (was hard to clean it in the bath with him coughing and whatnot), but the rest of him is good.

DD was only in the house a few minutes after he came in from getting sprayed. She had to run to the store for something for his kennel cough, and people in line were like, "I smell skunk!" :duck: It is still in my nose, too.

Our dog ended up with something similar to pneumonia. The vet said it wasn't kennel cough but that it was still highly contagious. Talk about bad timing because she was diagnosed 2 days before she was suppose to be dropped off to the kennel because we were heading to Disney World. :headache: Talk about a stressful couple of days trying to get things lined up for her. The thing that gets me is that she wasn't around any other dogs other than when she went into the vet the week before to get her teeth cleaned. I think she actually caught it there. She sounded awful and I felt so bad. I think the worst part was figuring out ways to get the meds in her. The pills weren't bad but the cough medicine was awful.

I feel so bad for your little guy. I hope he feels better soon. Sending him some pixie dust. pixiedust:

I would agree with you. Sounds like the incubation period is several days to two weeks. I am worried about the pneumonia, especially after he got a blast of skunk spray in his lungs on top of the organisms he already has. He sees the vet today (in isolation), I'm being told they'll start him on antibiotics. I agree, the cough syrup is tough. I've managed to get a few doses into him but he HATES it.

Sorry to hear about your pups. Our puppy just had his last vaccinations so the house has been pretty much on lock down until recently. However, every time he went to the vet I was so afraid he was going to come home with something. Then today while he was on his first walk he wanted to eat every piece of loose gravel he could find on the street. Besides that our summer has just been full of training the new puppy and keeping the old dog from learning bad habits from him.

We've had hunting hounds for decades, and *most* learn quickly to leave skunks and porkies alone. Poor Myrtle, though (god rest her soul) LOVED porcupines, and always had to get a good snoutful. We would have to sedate her, and pull them one by one, sometimes for hours. I like to think of her in doggie heaven with a noseful of quills ;).

Oh my...skunk-spray/dog-vomit sounds VILE! I hope you both make it through okay!

I hope things go well at the vet today. (Fingers crossed!)
I'll tell you what I ended up doing (after much trial and error) for the cough syrup that worked. My dog loves peanut butter. So I would take a piece of bread, use a dropper to get the dose of cough medicine on it, and then slathered it with peanut butter. I then folded the bread in half and ripped pieces off of it and fed it to her until it was gone. That seemed to work the best. She ended up having a lot of peanut butter for about 2 weeks, but I figured her eating a lot of peanut butter was better than not getting the meds.

Haha, absolutely love that visual!

Even though it was his first encounter with a skunk he learned pretty quickly to stay away. Last night after he went out front on a leash to do his duty he didn't want to come back in the house because he smelled a skunk inside! DH had to pick him up to get him in! :lmao:

Poor doggie, tough going for him and the family. Hope he's feeling fine and smelling sweet real soon.

It seems as if this has been a tough year for dog illnesses. Between that and the outbreak of bird flu this year, I'm wondering if we are in for a tough cold and flu season among the human population in a few months.

That reminds me of the dog from The Great Outdoors.

"What happened to that dog's face?"
"Don't mind Wormer, she hates people. Loves porcupines. Hates people."

Poor guy! We haven't had any encounters with skunks but I know how upsetting the kennel cough can be. :(

We found a tick on our little guy last night - his first ever! I felt like a bad momma. We live in South Florida though and it's hot hot hot.

Our little guy had some sort of stomach virus two weeks ago. The vet gave him some mess and he's back to himself, thank God!!

Our retriever will be realy lucky if he doesn't get stung by a bee this year. He seems drawn to them this year for some reason. OP will keep your pup in prayer, and thoughts.

Ugh .. your poor baby!! :( I had a few "farm" dogs get sprayed by skunks when I was young, but I'd be lost with what to do if that happened now with my indoor kids. We just put the dogs on the sleeping porch when they stunk way back when.

Hope he gets to feeling better soon
