Before my recent first trip to the "World", I found it invaluable to read other people's reviews of their experiences, and thought it only fair that I reciprocate. So here is my review of my stay at the POFQ from 1/30-2/3:

I booked my hotel through Debbie Kuhns of Magical Journeys, and she was a real gem. I was always stunned at how quickly she would respond to my emails at all hours of the day and night, and she got me everything I wanted, including a discount price for POFQ of $379 for 4 nights. The check-in line on Sunday evening was long, but it only took me about 20 minutes to check in. I was extremely happy that my room requests were all fulfilled: I had room 3229 (2nd floor; I had requested an upstairs room for security reasons) in Building 3, which is the closest to the main building, it was nonsmoking and, for the most part, very quiet throughout my stay. The room came equipped with the standard A/C, TV, and clock radio, along with coffeemaker and coffee, refrigerator, iron and ironing board, and in-room safe. Also, there is a laundry wire running lengthwise across the shower so you can hang your wet bathing suit up to dry. I was pleased with all of this.

The fitted sheet on my bed had a small tear in it, which didn’t bother me all that much. What did bother me was that the shower curtain liner was very moldy. I left a note for housekeeping on Monday, asking them to replace it, and when I returned to the room, it hadn’t been. However, that might have been my fault; my note said “moldy shower curtain” not “liner”. I couldn’t tell if the curtain itself had been replaced. But I called housekeeping, and they immediately sent up a “runner” named Diane who replaced the liner with a new one. She was nice and we chatted while she was doing it. I thanked her as she was leaving, and she said “Well, you shouldn’t have had to call about this.” I didn’t say anything, but of course I agreed with her.

POFQ has lovely grounds (especially the walk along the river), with piped in New Orleans jazz music all over the property. The gift shop didn’t seem to have much of a selection of goods. The food court was just okay, although the décor is fun. I loved the size of the resort, and its location, but the one thing it is sorely lacking is a sit-down restaurant. At the end of a long, tiring day, it would be really nice to know that I could grab a good meal within my hotel without having to use a cafeteria tray or eating fast food.

Almost all of the staff I encountered were friendly and did their jobs well with 2 exceptions (the housekeeper who missed the moldy shower curtain liner and a young woman working in Guest Relations. I stopped by the Guest Relations Desk on Wednesday to see if they had any ideas for where I might have dinner that would require very little walking from a bus stop in the rain and without having to do a bus transfer. I was willing to take a cab to and from the restaurant for convenience sake. She had no suggestions for specific restaurants, and was adamant about talking me out of taking a cab anywhere. “You don’t have to do that, you can take the bus anywhere, you just have to transfer.” I realize it’s probably difficult to give people suggestions for restaurants without knowing what their tastes are, but that’s the job of Guest Relations. They’re supposed to pull information out of you to help them help you. (At least, this is the way it works in Vegas; I don’t know how it normally works at Disney World.) She was no help whatsoever. So I was on my own.

I took advantage of the Express Checkout, which was very convenient. There was nothing on the bill that was contestable, so all was good. I also used the room key charge system, and that is SO convenient, I highly recommend it. It was nice not to worry about having to bring a charge card or tons of cash with me everywhere. The only place that didn’t accept it was the House of Blues company store, and they were very apologetic, it seemed to be some sort of technical glitch.

Finally, I know I’m comparing apples and oranges, but I really do feel the need to rant a little: For the same price I paid for POFQ, which is essentially a glorified motel room, I could have stayed at a 4 star hotel in Las Vegas, with interior hallways, a view of the Las Vegas Strip, a buffet, 24 hour café, expensive restaurants, a lounge with live music, a show or two, a spa, and all the slot machines I could care to play all under one roof. When I go to Las Vegas, I am pampered and treated like royalty. I did not feel pampered at POFQ. Not that I didn't enjoy myself, but when I go on vacation, I want people to wait on me hand and foot, I want a better class of experience than what I have at home. So I’d have to say that in terms of “bang for your buck”, the Disney resorts do not compare with what I've experienced in Las Vegas. (With one exception: At least I didn't come home reeking of cigarette smoke!)

But I knew all of this ahead of time, so I had time to prepare myself so I wasn't bitterly disappointed or anything. You know, "when in Rome" and all that. Because I couldn't stay more than 4 nights and wanted to do as much as possible in that time, staying on property was a necessity. For what it was, POFQ is a nice place to stay. I liked the fact that it wasn't too spread out, so you didn't have to walk very far to get to the food court or the bus stop or the river taxi. And I liked the peace and quiet it offered. I was very satisfied with the experience, and in fact, I would consider staying there again on any future trips to WDW.

Nice resort post...thank you for the info/comments. You are indeed correct about comparing the POFQ (Or ANY WDW resort for that matter), with those in Las Vegas (APPLES & ORANGES). ;)

If WDW opened casinos, they would have more $$$ to offer such perks (for the same/less cost). It's why you can take a "Carnival" cruise, for a fraction of the cost of a DISNEY CRUISE! "Gambling" (and the loss of your revenue) helps to "offset" the cost of your accommodations and amenities. :)

In the same breath, different types of "people" frequent such venues. Therefore, we prefer the "atmosphere" of WDW and the DCL, over Vegas or Carnival. Just a matter of personal preference and perspective. :flower:

*P.S. ~ In the future...if you wish to be "pampered and waited on hand and foot" you should consider a deluxe property in concierge. Of course, you will pay more for this level of service while in WDW, but you may have a more enjoyable time. There is truly no other place like VEGAS in the world. If you travel outside the strip...it becomes clearly evident. But, if you count the $$ you lose gambling on slots or tables, It possibly may pay for the upgrade to "deluxe concierge" @ WDW.

Thank you for your report...although I gotta tell you that I will be looking into a Vegas trip very soon thanks to your comments! LOL! DH and I do not care to gamble, so we would definitely end up "winners" out there! :cool1:

I have not stayed at POFQ...because I am concerned it will be a little like a "glorified motel." I also prefer interior hallways. I also like a sit down restaurant wherever I stay. We have always been happy at the WL...and AKL is also awesome...and not quite as pricey as the Poly, GF or CR. You should try one of those. I will saty at POFQ one day...maybe even Pop Century. But we will have a different attitude when checking in there than when we check into WL or AKL. We will stay at a mod or value when we plan on really hanging out at the parks.

Hello,

I enjoyed reading your post. I'd like to make a comment about your comparing the PO with a Vegas resort. I've never been to Vegas, so I'm certainly not familiar with it, but it seems that they keep room prices low in order to entice you into gambling at their hotel. I have stayed at most of the WDW resorts , and PO-FQ is one of my favorites. I also enjoy the walk along the river, especially at night when it's quiet out. I like the boat ride to DTD, and the fact that the resort is compact compared to some of the other Disney resorts. I do miss having a full service restaurant, but other than Boma at AKL, and 'Ohanas at Polynesian, I rarely eat dinner at my resort anyway.

In a way of comparing room prices, I work in Orange County, NY. There is a Hampton Inn and a Courtyard right across from where I work. The Hampton Inn usually gets around $109 a night (gov rate), and the Courtyard is around $125 a night. Thats for a generic room, with either a view of my station's parking lot, some chain restaurants, or RT-17. For the last few years, I've paid around $80 a night at Disney's moderates, and the difference in surroundings is unbelievable.

Thanks for the report, I did enjoy it!!

Take care,

Bill

DEFINITELY APPLES AND ORANGES!

That's all I have to say about that!

Tracy

Thanks for the review - I'm just curious, which 4* hotels on the strip in Vegas could you stay at for approximately $95.00 per night? Not trying to be sarcastic but, I've never paid that little for a luxury hotel, even in Vegas.

Vegas always gives low prices on hotels to get the people IN. Sometimes even free meals, in a trade-off for you to gamble and give them lots of your money. I personally prefer a family place like WDW to take my family, just knowing I will pay more because it is a resort. But a fun place to be.

I've stayed in the Luxor hotel for $59 a night. The hotels are indeed nicer in Vegas and you get more than you pay for if you don't gamble. I guess unless you can gamble and win - LOL!

I love Vegas but the two seem like very different vacations - enjoyable in their own right. I don't think there are many places like Vegas where you can pay so little for a room in a hotel with so many amenities though.

Great review!

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I was a little afraid I'd stir up a hornet's nest among the Disney faithful for my comparison to Vegas hotels, and that really wasn't my intention. I wasn't trying to diss Disney. I'm just one of those people who really wants to get the most for my money and to tell it like it is (in my opinion, of course) re accommodations at WDW.

Re 4 stars in Vegas for less than I paid for POFQ, I've stayed at the Paris Las Vegas twice for $69/night and the Mirage for $79/ and $89/night, so yes, it can be done. You just have to choose your timing right. Go during the slow season, and go during the week instead of on the weekend. Sign up at the hotel website's guestbooks, and they'll send you emails with room deals. Once there, IF you plan to gamble at all, sign up for the hotel's slot club card and use it while gambling, and that will also make you eligible for future room deals. (I think I put $5 through a machine in Paris my first trip, and that's what got me the $69 room deal. Believe it or not.)

(And the joke's on them if they think they're getting the money back from me via gambling, because I don't gamble much at all. I'm there to see the sights.)

Thanks for the suggestion about WL and AKL. Any idea why they're cheaper than the Poly? I have to admit, I do like the idea of a room with a view of the savannah. I think Animal Kingdom was my favorite Disney park.

I also agree that hotel prices in other cities around the country are appallingly high. I know the one-horse town I grew up in has a motel that has the nerve to charge $100/night to stay there during the busy season, because they're the only game in town. I guess that's the market. But it's no good for those of us who to watch what we spend.

Thanks for the insight about getting deals at Vegas hotels. I was genuinely interested in how you got the deals. I don't think that there is a "Dis" for Vegas. :confused3 DH and I were going to take a short (three day weekend) trip and I couldn't find anything below $150.00 per night. We don't gamble so we were just going for the experience. It turned out cheaper for us to go to Mexico for four days.

Anyway, I think that it is really good that the Dis welcomes all opinions, reviews, ect. All input is important :sunny:

Dayowlvt-I know that the WL and AKL are "cheaper" deluxes because they are not on the monorail loop AND their rooms are a teensy bit smaller.

I have stayed at the WL (standard view) for $109 a night. I was upgraded to courtyard view. They always seem to upgrade if you go during the slow season. this was a Fl resident rate, but I think AP rates are the same.

I have stayed at AKL for $121 a night (if I remember correctly) for a pool view but was upgraded to savannah. To tell you the truth, I think I would have preferred the pool view! the savannah is cool for a day or two, but there are plenty of places to see the animals from the lookout points around the lodge. plus, at night time it is just a "blah" view where as the pool view would be beautiful with lights and activity.

Anyway, thanks for the Vegas tips. DH and I plan on doing that trip one day!

I have read a few articles comparing Disney Cruises to other cruises and the higher prices of the Disney cruises - most authors attribute the higher prices on the Disney cruises to 1) the lack of casinos on board; 2) more family travelers, and thus fewer consumers of alcoholic beverages.

I believe the same comparison may be made to comparing Disney World resorts to Las Vegas resorts.

during that time, and conversely, I prefer an exterior entrance. I had a much greater sense of privacy, and didn't feel the presence of neighbors 24/7. I have 3 children, and like it when I don't feel I have to shush them every other minute.

We stayed at Poly and YC last trip and I missed having a food court. It is just so practical with older kids. We stayed in building 4 and my 13 and 10 yo's could go on their own to grab breakfast, etc. We do lots of sit downs durinr our trip, but I'd never do sit-down in a moderate resort. IMHO, the convenience and compact size of POFQ more than make up for its lack of a full service restaurant.

Yes, me too. "The best way to double your money, is to fold it in half and put it in your pocket!" Although I pay quite a bit more than you quoted to stay concierge @ the MGM on the 29th floor...I still have to walk through a crowded and noisy lobby to reach my elevator. Even worse...I have to walk through the smoky, noisy and LOUD casino areas to access ANY OTHER PLACE worth seeing!

I'd much rather "stroll" the grounds of the POFQ...anyday. ;)

Yes, also have to agree about the prices of other hotels around the country (being appallingly high) as well as world. Recently returning from Europe...I can attest the price of the hotels are astounding. Or...maybe it's just our $$$ is so darned weak against the Pound/Euro. :confused3 :sad2:
No wonder so many from the UK are traveling to WDW and also purchasing in DVC!

The AKL is one of the resorts I have yet to try...but am VERY intrigued by. It certainly seems to be a very bright star among the DIS faithful. ;)

Your post is insightful, honest and very well written. Thank you, again, for a lovely read. :goodvibes

Thanks for your review. We are going to stay at POFQ this coming December, I believe.

I think your comparison to Vegas is interesting too. My step-mom frequents Vegas. She love the atmosphere. I have no desire to go there. It's funny, because she complains about me going to Disney all of the time. It's whatever you enjoy. We take family vacations to Disney, so I can't say I'm going to go to Vegas instead, because my children wouldn't enjoy it as much. The thought of the smoke is just a major turnouff to me.

But, besides the hotel, you are missing some simple amentities that you can get at Disney that that you don't get at Vegas or anywhere else. The pools are very attractive, even at the value resorts. They appeal to families. We will NEVER go to Disney without staying onsite and that is for one reason alone and that is the transportation. I've never vacationed anywhere else where you can park your car at the airport and then never drive again until you get back into that car when you return from vacation. While Disney's transportation might not always be the most efficient, you can rely on it, knowing that the Disney people will get you where you are going.

Oh DF, you simply *must* try the AKL. Staying CL there is such an incredible experience! The lounge is spacious and well-appointed. It even has a HUGE cappuccino/espresso/whatever else you could possibly image machine. Apparently this machine is a $10,000 wonder.

The lounge is spacious and comfortable, and the CL staff are very friendly and helpful. Plus, you have the option of doing the Sunrise and Sunsest Safaris. We did the Sunrise Safari and had an absolute blast--what an experience! Plus, the AKL suites look like some of the nicest on property to me (from pictures I have seen)--claw-footed tubs in the bathroom, a fireplace in the living room with a thatched roof, ample space, African art surrounding you. You should definitely give it a try!

Oh, Elisabeth...Can you believe it is one of only two properties I have not yet tried? :confused3 (aside from any value resorts). I have entered the lobby, shopped in the gift shop, walked outside to view the animals in the dark, and dined in Boma's. To TOP it all off...I have even walked to the desk and spoken with a sweet older female associate, whom enticed me to stay with a map and full description of the concierge rooms available. She ensured me she could assist me in making the best decision, If I wished to reserve a room for the future. Argh....I do not know why I'm dragging my feet here?

I've heard of the espresso/cappucino "master-monster-machine" in the lounge, and being the satisfied owner of a Swiss-made Capresso....I MUST have access to fresh-ground/pressed espresso each day!! ;)

I promise...to give the AKL Concierge a try, and report my findings back to the resort board. Perhaps...I'm afraid once I try it, I'll be hard-pressed to stay anywhere else. Just look at #1Hockeymom and others, they RAVE about this place in great detail. It's pushing me closer and closer to the....phone!! :cheer2:

Thanks for the nice vote of confidence in this lovely property. I do agree, it is one of the BEST themed properties (aside from the WL & POLY) to grace all of WDW. :goodvibes

P.S. I adore the photo in your sig! :bride:

Very good & thorough review - Thanks for taking the time to write it. I've heard the same thing about Vegas resorts also. I signed up at several sites when researching a trip to Vegas & was getting amazing price offers for the caliber of resort. Like eveyone has said, I attribute that to it being the lure to get folks in to lose their money in the casinos....

I'm glad someone else feels this way about POFQ. IT is OK - yes, a glorified hotel room. I have a really hard time with "resort" in the title. When we were there, we went to the Polynesian and even at a slow time of year, there was a real buzz here. It was kind of cool. That said, I do not think it's worth the money for a little "buzz" if you know what I mean.

POFQ on the other hand was dead. Nothing going on, no activities, nothing. I didn't find the boat drivers to be very friendly. The check-in CMs were less than helpful. The guest services CMs couldn't even find a map for me. I certainly didn't feel any real "Disney Magic" I know you get what you pay for, but why should you feel like you have to spend $300+ on a room to be treated well? (Yes, I have stayed in some of those rooms too.)

I don't know if I expected too much. I am certainly not demanding, but it was quite a let down. BUT, will we go back? Yeah, we probably will. So what does that say? Disney doesn't have to worry, the fools (and their wallets)will be back anyway. (and I believe that attitude is starting to be obvious at the hotels and the parks.)

I wholeheartedly disagree with POFQ being a "glorified motel room." A motel room is drab, dreary, sometimes dirty, and offers nothing outside of the room. POFQ offers live Jazz music everynight in Scat Cat's Lounge, a varied food court, a river on which you could participate in fishing excursions or take to Downtown Disney for some nightlife and shopping, an enormous pool with a serpent slide, Easter egg hunts, crafting activities for the kids during different time periods, carriage rides, walking grounds, and more. I have never heard of a motel offering all of this and quite frankly, would never stay at a motel either.

I think you need to look at the entire feel and offerings of the resort before you compare it to some beat-down motel shack. POFQ offers one of the prettiest and peaceful grounds on WDW property. It is meant to be quiet with a bit of New Orleans charm added on. This is because it is designed primarily for couples or couples with kids.

If you want to be waited on hand and foot, you are not going to get that for just a bit over $100. That doesn't happen anywhere...and I am sure the cheap rates you received in Vegas blinded you to this. You get what you pay for...if you want all-inclusive vacations, go with the Premium Dining Plan...if you want enormous room layout, stay in a villa...if you want to be waited on hand and foot, stay at a deluxe hotel that offers such services. Do not expect it to be at a moderate resort.

As a side note, we have stayed at POFQ and adored the resort. We received excellent treatement including gifts in our room upon our arrival with a note from management welcoming us back. No, we are not DVC members, but had just been to Disney nine months beforehand. We will stay at POFQ again.
