I just found out my parakeet, Tiki (named after the Enchanted Tiki Room, of course) has a tumor. I took her to the vet today and he said she will live 2-3 weeks at the most. He said she is not in pain which is my only consolation. I know it sounds funny to be sad about a bird, but I am 22 years old and I got this bird for my 12th birthday. So I have kind of grown up with her. Every morning when I come down the stairs she says "good morning Lauren" and she knows a few other phrases. Whenever I am in the kitchen she always "talks" to me and it makes me smile. I'm just sad that I'm loosing my little parakeet! :sad2:

wow, we've had our parakeet for the same amount of time! he knows little phrases too. "good morning bell", "pretty bird", "hello bell", are just a few he also does the sexy whistle. i know it'll be hard to see him go. i understand how you must feel. i've tried begging my boyfriend to get me a parakeet for our apartment, since i miss my bird, but he says they are too noisy. bah, what does he know?

Very sorry to read this, Lauren. I know how you feel. My wife, Marie, had a parrot, from her age about 10 or so till just last year, over 45 years. He too had tumors, twice. They were removed and he did well for years.

My very best for you, Lauren, in the sad days ahead. You have a lifetime of wonderful memories.

Wow, that was an old parrot! The vet told me they can sometimes remove tumors but he said if he had to guess he would say that Tiki had a 1 in 50 chance of surviving surgery. He told me how to tell if she is in pain in case we need to put her to sleep. I will be looking for the signs, I don't want her to suffer. I just went out and covered her cage and she told me goodnight. :goodvibes

it's not silly at all to be upset about your parakeet. The same thing happened to my cockateil when I was younger and it took me a long tome to get over it. Actually, I never really got over it. But it did cause my love for birds to grow. Now, I have 2 wonderful birds (see pictures below) who light up my life every time I come home. You sound like a wonderful parent to your bird. I wish you and your parakeet all the best.

I will admit I cried in the vet's office when he told me Tiki had 2-3 weeks to live. He looked at me really strange, he obviously thought I was being ridiculous. You always hear people talking about how much they love their dogs and cats, it is good to hear that other people love their birds too!

We had a parakeet when I was much younger and I was devastated when he flew away. Our feathered friends are special, too. :grouphug:

Take care!

10 years is a nice long run for a 'keet! I'm glad you have been able to have your friend for that long.

I'm sorry.

If you decide to get more, I have two I'd be happy to deliver.

:grouphug: A pet is a pet. Birds count just as much. Sorry to read your sad news.

:grouphug: Aw, I'm sorry about your birdie. It's not ridiculous to grieve a pet you've had for 10 yrs. I love parakeets--there 'chatter" is kinda soothing and they're friendly pets. We used to have two, but they escaped one day while i was cleaning their cage :guilty: That was 3 yrs ago and i still miss them.

Many many hugs to you

It's always so sad to lose any pet :guilty: . I'm so sorry about what is happening.

I'm sorry to hear about Tiki :(

I never had birds until I met my wife MeanLaureen. She had a cockatiel named Rico that was about 10 when we met. He was quite a character. He died of a heart attack about a year later and I know Lauri was torn up over it.

After a couple of years she eventually persueded me into getting another bird, then another... then they started breeding - our 2 parakeets turned into 12 and our 2 cockatiels turned into 12. We have a house full of chatter now but you still get so attached to their feathered little rumps.

Aww..so sorry! :grouphug: I am also a bird Mom and I know how close you can get to your feathered babies. I recently lost two of my budgies - one just got sick one day and died when I was petting him the next day. And one of my females died during egg binding and died when I was holding her.. :( I still have 3 (male) cockatiels and 9 budgies and I spend time with them every day.

I hope your budgie will be ok!!

Jill
