My night....(hmm, controversial?)

So my boyfriend and I are walking to the EL from Chili's, leftover package in hand. This homeless man, (or just down on his luck) grabs my arm and asks if he can buy my leftovers. I look at him and say "sure $10", so then he says he doesn't have any money. So of course I'm about to start this long conversation about the ramifications of telling lies, but my boyfriend drags me away. So we're walking, and I turn and look, and the guy is following us very closely, trying to intimidate us. I can tell he's going to grab my purse.
And then sheer panic. I realized he was going after the food!!!!!! :teeth:

So finally I turn around and ask him if he thinks I'm a bleeping tourist!! (no offense) What are you gonna do, follow me home so I can make you a sandwich?? So he leaves....

At this point, my boyfriend and I are on the EL, feeling like the tough Chicago kids we are. We get off, we walk home. We think maybe we'll join the Guardian Angels and protect the streets.

So now we were going to split part of the leftovers. I ask him where are they?
We look at each other, and tear rolls slowly down his face and I realize, we left them on the train. :guilty:

***edited to change title****

Wow for some reason this post really pissed me off. Nothing creeps me out more than people teasing other people about food. I must have had some childhood trauma or something.

In any event that was just plain mean. I wouldn't be so proud of yourself if I were you. I don't like people touching me either esp. not aggresivly ( I probably would have had some words for him as well) but to taunt and tease someone down on their luck is just messed up.

Wow. Turns out the act pales in comparison to the posting about it later.

The good news here is it's very possible another homeless person had a good meal that night.

:teeth: :rotfl: Oh yes, it's so horrible there are people like me out there. So rich and selfish, never giving of themselves... for shame, for shame...

Well, the part of the story about being proud and tough was poking fun at ourselves.

Hmmmm, am I too witty and smart for my own good?? ;)

Well, sorry you are all offended, but not sorry I wrote it. You either have my sense of humor or you don't.

I won't defend myself because I know what kind of person I am. But please, feel free to send some more insults my way...maybe I can use them in the future when I'm taunting and teasing people around the neighborhood.

I'm sorry that was not sarcasm that was just being a jerk! I am a very sarcastic person and I've lived and worked in some very bad East Coast cities and none of the locals would have acted like the smart *** you did. Either give him the food or totally ignore him that is what is the norm to do. I can't believe you thought this was funny. Next time you try to "act big and tough" I hope the person is as sane as this one and doesn't knife you, spit on you, or worse. Grow up.

He was smirking when he offered money, and it was crowded. The $10 bucks thing flew out of my mouth!! :teeth: The only time I got nervous was when he kept walking behind us, trying to get closer.

OP: Yes, people like that CAN be creepy...but if you had just given him the food and left it at that..he would have probably scrambled off into a corner and devoured it....BUT when you started bargaining with him (suggesting the $10.00) he thought that there may be a chance for him to actually have the food...he might have thought you were kidding giving him a price and thought you might just eventually give the bag to him.... :confused3

Just an idea....

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep it in mind. :)

I got it. I would not gave up my meal either. Person was hanging by the restuarant to get food. He should have never grabbed your arm or lied about buying it. You would have handed him the food and he would have taken off. I would have offered it seeing him, I am sure you would have too.

I could hug you right now. I'm actually on the phone with my dad, telling him what's up!! (he'd like to talk to Hannathy, by the way ;) )
I always give the food, this guy was a jerk.

Had you not posted about it the way you did I aowuld bea greeing about the agressiveness. But now that really takes a back seat to what you posted.

Wow - I am ashamed to share a city with you. As a Chicagoan, I would never deny my leftovers to whoever asked.

Nor would I make fun of the encounter after the fact.

I feel sorry for anyone who is hungry - it must be terribly degrading to have to ask for food.

Oh well, now you can all feel even better about yourselves by insulting me. :thumbsup2 me, a loving pet owner, me, a democrat, me, who gives part of her paycheck to charity.... :teeth:

Whatever. I'll be back to post another day!!!!! :moped:

Why won't you step back and try to realize how you're sounding in your post?

I can see that this incident must have been pretty scary, then after it was all said and done, the relief you guys must have felt on the EL, only to have lost your meal anyway. I get the irony there.

But your posting style leaves a whole different impression of the scenario.

Nope. Explained myself several times in different posts. My post was sarcastic. I'm not going to try and re-explain everything, because then it sounds like I am making things up to make you guys love me, and that's not what I'm about. I will say this, I already stated he was smirking when he said he'd buy it, and it naturally came out to be...oh what was I called earlier... a smart-a...., and answer him right back about the $10. No apologies there either.

Some of you took the post the wrong way and felt the need to insult me. Oh well, life goes on. :confused3

I'm always afraid NOT to give away my leftovers to ppl who ask....you know...the fear of being asked the question of "why did you not feed those who were hungy when you had plenty" on Judgement Day.

Fine, sorry I even replied. I thought my replies were respectfully worded because I've always enjoyed your other posts.

I have several thoughts.

First, the man should not have laid a hand on you. If he hadn't touched you, but just asked you for the food nicely, what would your reaction have been?

I think the $10 comment was rude. You should have ignored him and not said anything or told him "no". He was in the wrong to begin with, but it doesn't mean that you needed to continue the wrong.

I hardly think a lecture about lying to him would have been the right thing to do. He shouldn't have followed you--at that point he was probably pissed off.

Karma got your leftovers, I do believe.

I can't fault you for not giving the guy your food since he grabbed your arm, however, you didn't handle it well, either. There's no reason to not show respect for others. "There But for the Grace of God go I" I hope that none of us are ever in that man's shoes.

:rotfl:

(another case of not reading or listening to anything I have to say)

Honey, that's last on the list of why I'm not getting past those pearly gates!! :teeth:

:sad2: Wow...just wow! :sad2: :sad2:

If I were you OP, I would just quit posting now. You're just making yourself look worse, if thats even possible at this point.

Sorry, but it felt like an insult to me. And if you've enjoyed my other posts, then where would you ever get the idea that I like to taunt and ridicule the homeless??? (as stated in many other posts)
