I think I posted the other day that I got a new puppy.. She's a 5 month old Brittany Spaniel. SHE'S INSANE! Does anyone know anything about Brittany spaniels???
I mean, she won't stop moving!!! She's adorable though, but CRAZY

I don't mean this to be nasty, but the time to find out things about the type of dog you want is before you actually get the dog.

Well, that's not mean, and I'm totally ready to deal with her. I already have a dog that was just as crazy when she was a puppy.
They were going to put the Brittany to sleep because she was over 5 months old, so I took her.. I saved her life.
I just wonder if anyone knows anything about Brittanys.

Did you do any research about Brittany's? It is a VERY VERY high energy dog.

You need to walk this pup at a minimum 2 hours daily. Must be at a heel to exercise the dog's brain.

If you are not up for this you probably should rethink this dog. It may just not be a match to go with your lifestyle.

This is a dog for jogging, yuppies who are running at 5am everyday.:thumbsup2

Just wanted to add if you are not training it for hunting you have to substitute a different activity otherwise they "go insane".

well, I have a huge yard and it's been about 90-95 degrees out the last few days, so I can't take her for a long walk. The vet said not to have her outside in the heat.
I love going for walks, so this is a perfect dog for me.
Thanks for the responses... I'll need to go to Barnes and Noble and pick up a book on Brittanys.

Since it is hot it will shorten the walk time. When the dog gets "insane" put the leash on and out the door you go.
It will help you bond and help release the pup's energy.

We got 2 pups at 4 months and we walked them 3 times a day to wear them out. It really helps, trust me.

So get out there and WALK!:thumbsup2

Walk early (before 8) and walk late (after 8). Walk for an hour in the morning and an hour at night.

Also, fetch works really well with spaniels if you have a fenced yard. You get to sit and she gets to run around.

We got an English Springer Spaniel last year, which is a similar breed (not the same) and he is very energetic for an old dog.

Thank you so much... I mean, I didn't post to be yelled at :lmao: I really wanted to give this dog a good home, I'm such an animal lover and I have a golden retreiver already and they get along great.
This new dog will be the perfect excuse to lose 15 pounds.. lol

I'm sorry. I wasn't yelling. I get a little frustrated at times by some of the dog posts on here.

I know what you mean...
I just wanted to do anything to not have this dog put down. I begged this place to tell me that people look at this dog every day, I asked so many questions "has anyone wanted this dog?, Why did no one take her?, etc..." They told me that people would inquire about her daily, but then say they weren't allowed pets, or didn't have a yard.
I felt like I could give this little dog a good home. I know I can! ;)
I heard that Brittany's will do better in a 2 dog household, she already gets along great with my golden.
This is actualy a good thing and I'm glad I asked questions, because we have these trails near our house by the ocean that I'm going to take her walking :)

I will assume you have her in a "puppy school" since she is already so problematic.

Several of our larger pet stores have low cost training sessions.

Spaniels are the cutest puppies! I'm sure with exercise, she'll calm down in no time. :thumbsup2

Did the dog come with papers?

Yes she did... I got the certificate of pedigree, all her ancestry is on there, all her shots are done, she has a microchip too...
I just have to get her fixed.... very soon....
It took about 45 minutes to adopt her. I had to fill out alot of paperwork.

Hi AmIThereYet!
that's right, we have the 'twin' goldens....
It's so funny how dogs personalities are so different. My golden is so calm compared to the brittany, but I also remember when my golden was a little crazy. She's such a good dog now and I hope the Brittany turns out OK too! :thumbsup2

Well, I just got her 3 days ago....
And she's not so much problematic as she's just being a puppy I presume :confused3
Remember also, she's 5 months old and has been in a 5 foot by 5 foot cage her 'whole' life until now. I can imagine she'd want to run around like a lunatic.

She will! Just remember, this too shall pass. I would be clueless about her too. Heck, I was clueless about Chloe, but I learned. :)

THe training wouldn't be a bad idea anyway...you will probably be happier with her in the long run.;)
