My new Puppy is driving me crazy!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! That's wonderful you decided to open your home to her, she's very lucky.

I'm with ya on all the craziness, we have a 5 1/2 mo old German Sheperd. We did just get her fixed. She's calming a smidgen, but she's still such a nut. Enjoy her!

Is your yard fenced? If so I would let her run around outside. That will help her use some of that energy! Hang in there, puppies can drive you nuts sometimes but they are so dang cute it's hard to stay mad:cutie:

THe training wouldn't be a bad idea anyway...you will probably be happier with her in the long run.;)

True... I'm going to see if I can follow the training guide in my dog books, then if there's no improvemenet next week, I may enroll her.

lol, we were going to name her Lucky too! But we kept calling her Britney, so that's her name... I know, so original....
Oh German Sheperds are adorable! Good luck with her....
Post a pic, I'd love to see her!

First of all, Kudos to you for adopting an unwanted dog.

The Brittany is first and foremost a working dog. Although, they are one of the more popular hunting dogs because their friendly dispositions make for wonderful house pets as well. However, because of their keen intelligence and their need for exercise and to do a job, they are not always recommended for every family. You have to understand that this dog is going to take more work than your Golden ever did.

The walks morning and night are a good idea. So would be one of those tennis ball throwers. For as often as you are going to have to throw that tennis ball, it really saves the arm. :teeth:

But the first thing you need to do is find an obedience class and quickly. You need to learn to channel this energy into positive behavior. And you need to do it fast before any bad habits are learned. Especially since she has been basically ignored for 5 months. She is at the perfect age to start obedience training. Believe me, this is a breed that absolutely should have obedience training, especially with a novice family.

This breed needs something to do. If you don't provide a stimulating environment, the puppy will make one up on her own. And chances are, you will not like her idea of a stimulating environment. There are many fun things you can do with your Brittany, ie: hunting. If you are not going to hunt, another suggestion would be that once you have basic obedience down, is to do agility with her. This is a very fun activity for both the dog and the handler, and would satisfy her energy needs and keep her mind busy. Remember, a bored smart dog is a destructive smart dog.

The next thing I would recommend to do quickly is to find some reputable Brittany breeders in your area. The best way to find them is to find your local AKC sanctioned breed club and contact them to find somebody in your area who is an expert in the breed. Explain to them what you have explained to us - that you rescued this puppy on the verge of it being put down. And that you need help in raising her properly. Most breeders are extremely busy with their own puppy people, however, most will bend over backwards to help a new family that has rescued one of their breed. Only from the experts can you learn the best way to raise this puppy to get the most benefit from the breed.

Here is the website for your national breed club:
http://clubs.akc.org/brit/

And here are a couple of the local breed secretaries. You should give them a call and ask them for pointers. They are the experts and they can give you much better info than any of us on the DIS can.

Good Luck and Congratulations. She is a cutie!

FYI, the harder breeds are often some of the most rewarding breeds to own. The work you put into her, you will reap 1000 told the benefits! Start her off right and you will have one of the best family companions imaginable.

We actually have 2 yards... One in the back and one on the side. The one in the back is smaller and is fenced in, that's 'our yard'. The one of the side is huge and is partially fenced in and it's technically not our yard. It's the people downstairs, but there is no one living downstairs, it's a business, so we use it. My golden runs around there no problem, she won't run away, but the new pup might try, so I'm thinking about setting up some sorta contraption so she can't get out. We rent a 2 family house, so we practically can do whatever we want there. The people that live downstairs actually don't live there, like I said it's a business, they are there 9-5 M-F, I love our living situation! Hope the pup will too!

the flight attendant would reccomend Puppy benadril, hehehehehee

Thank you! This is some really good information! i'm going to show this to DH tonight when I get home.
Where should I think about taking her for training?? Like a Pet-Co? I wonder how much that costs....
I read that they are very intellegent and eager to learn.. just like goldens...

Sometimes, my golden wants nothing to do with the new pup and the new pup annoys the heck out of her.. and the golden growls and shows her teeth.. >but my golden wouldn't hurt a fly... I hope my golden doesn' get depressed :sad2:

That's funny you say that... Do you know the vet told us to give our Golden benedril (human benedril) to my dog when it thunders!!?? He said that will calm her down cause my golden is VERY SCARED when it thunders. So bad that she shakes uncontrollably and tried to hide in the cabinet.

I probably would've named her the same-lol. This is our Zoe. It's very hard to get a still picture of her, she's always moving!

Her passions include chasing bubbles, playing fetch, eating/playing with ice cubes, and attacking splashes of water (:confused3 ) and her teddy bear:goodvibes .

Her dislikes include the broom, the vacuum, fire hydrents, and the word no.

We're actually working on training her in German and she's doing very nicely with that. She's currently in a teething stage-- yikes!!!!

*ETA our previous dog was a golden, his name was Poppy. Dh wanted another, but I didn't think I could go throw that long a puppyhood at this time. Good luck with Britney and hope you have lots of patience!!!! :goodvibes:

Chloe is the same way. Thunder and fireworks. Houston has gotten a LOT of both lately, and she's been a nervous wreck.

You wanna know where she tries to hide all 106lbs of her big self? Under my desk, while my legs are already there, or in between my legs if I'm walking. If only I had a saddle.

I highly recommend picking up a copy of Cesar's Way, by Cesar Millan. Also watch "The Dog Whisperer" on tv. I grew up around dogs, but I've learned so much just be reading his book and watching him in action!

One thing he advocates that has been pointed out here is walking. He also has this thing that I'm going to look into for my own dogs is that if you can't walk them for long enough, to put a doggy backpack on them, which will make them work harder. He also uses a treadmill, which is really something to see.

SO CUTE!! She looks like she's in the process of getting up any second!!
My pup attacks splashes of water too!!! Actually when she drinks, half the water comes flying out her mouth.. SHe's a very sloppy puppy, she loves stepping in her water bowl!
We actually got her one of those plastic $8 pools, filled it with water and she loves it! She jumps in and out of the thing, splashes the water all over the place.
That's great, teaching her in German!!!
This is probably about the best time for me to learn patience.
Yes, goldens IMO are the best dogs ever created!!! They are so puppy like, even when they're old. but they are just the cutest things! My golden is almost 3 and she did calm down alot, but can turn into a puppy in no time! I still call my golden Pup, even though her name is Pumpkin!

I added the breed contact info to my previous post. I would highly recommend getting in touch with some Brittany people.

As for obedience classes, the beginning ones at Pet-Co, your local humane society, Petsmart, etc are usually just fine for puppy kindergarten. As you advance, you might want to seek out a more professional trainer. (although I should say that one of the top trainers in our area is also the one who teaches the classes at our Pet-co, so it really depends on the person teaching the classes). The Brittany people can help you find a trainer that fits your puppy's personality the best.

As for your Golden showing her teeth to the puppy, this is completely normal. Don't interfere unless one dog is physically trying to maul the other. But growling and even nipping is 1) the elder dog's way of discilining your puppy and showing her the ways of the household and 2) they are establishing dominance and pack order. One dog has to be the dominant over the two and it is best to let nature sort it out. They will decide which one becomes the higher in the pack order. Just remember that you and your family should always be higher in pack order than any of the dogs. Never let the puppy try the dominance thing with you.

Have fun with her. They are great dogs!

I'm addicted to this show!!!
I have to be the 'pack leader'.. right now this pup thinks she is. That's right... His whole thing is the dogs need to be walked.. Maybe I should call cesar over to my house!!

I read that book and did not like it.

Where did you actually get the puppy from? Did you adopt her or did you buy her from a pet store?

Kerri

She was at this no name pet store.. or should I say, NO name I've ever heard of... She was shoved in the back with all the other dogs that were over 5 months old. DH's mom adopted a Japanese Chin that was 6 months and I took the Brittany. Can you believe, they marked these dogs down to $50!!!! They just wanted to get rid of them.. And like I said, they are pedigrees with all their paperwork. They have been de-wormed & have all their shots. They let out the birttany from her cage and she was just the most loveable thing! She played with the toys in the little play area like she's never played before! I knew right away I had to save her life. I called DH and he immediately said NO.. But he called me back and said he didn't' want her to die and we can bring another family member into the home and it would be good for the golden. So they gave Brittany a bath and that when they said she loves water. Then the guy at the store, picked her up, her dangly legs just hanging.. oh she's just so cute... I felt/feel really good about what we've done. I have no regrets, even if it will take a lot of work. :)

:confused3 My first reaction is that she is just a normal puppy. We have always had our dogs from young pups and if I remember correctly they were all crazy:dance3: OUr latest was a 1 y/o rescue and he was quite crazy too, but in the year since we have had him, he has become the best dog ever. In a few months you'll forget all the insanity and she will mellow.

Good luck with her she is just gorgeous.

Oh my... is that a beagle!? Dh wanted one so bad!!!! SO cute!
I figure since I posted a pic of my new pup, I should post a pic of my old pup so she doesn't get jealous ;)
